Is this for home use? If so will you really need to go out and buy a ream of tracing paper to use this function? It's interesting but not practical.

The best use I could come up with for this would be in a museum. Probably not very practical for home use but I could see kids (and me) having a blast with this thing while learning about the skeletons of dinosaurs or the parts of a jet engine by waving some paper over it.

I'm not seeing the magic here.

Every example of how this technology excels could be done by merely adding windows/overlay/viewport to existing monitor and use something like multitouch to tweak viewport.

One example given was you're looking at a car from the outside and when you put a piece of paper on it you can see the internals of the car...how is this different than merely opening another window on the display which shows same?

This UI tech better come to fruition... I really love the variable projection. I really want one of these.

Wow? How about, what's the point? It might take some neat technical trickery, but how is having to hold real objects over a screen useful? The exact same effect could achieved with a virtual object overlaid on the screen and involve less junk laying around to mess with. Am I supposed to have to keep an assortment of crap in a drawer by the surface that I have to open up and pull out every time I want to see the street names on a map? Why don't I just drag a magnifying icon from the sidebar that I can twist and resize, then just drag it back when I'm done, instead of having to open a drawer and put some piece of paper back I didn't need in the first place.

Wow, now that's cool. The most amazing this is just the idea to come up with it. This just goes to show that it's getting to the point that if you can imagine something you can make it reality (within limits).

Awesome tech. Though, it seems proximity to the screen would have a narrow range for the projected image. I would think the image would only be in focus at certain distances from the screen without needing adjustment. A minor gripe for some otherwise astounding bit of tech.

@Tweak: Move your hand in front of your face and away quickly. Repeat a lot and at super high speeds. You'll see both your hand (the on screen image) and your monitor (the projected image) at the same time if you did it fast enough. Though, the screen isn't moving like your hand would be. It's just turning from opaque to transparent and back again very rapidly.

I love the idea of using actually physical objects to interact with virtual. There are tons of videos of the Surface doing this plus that video wall thingy does it. It is very cool, but I don't see how I'm ever going to use this cool tech at home.
