@Curves: My girlfriend's dad had a cast iron skillet he used to make popcorn with. He'd just wipe it out and never actually clean it so there was always a thin grease layer at the bottom. This went on for years until her mom cleaned the skillet one day.

He never made popcorn again...

@Jrsy is the dude, playing the dude, disguised as another du...: I do that with my cast iron cookware as well (especially my cast iron wok). If you clean it too well, you have to reseason them.

Flameware...really? That sounds safe. I foresee rampant office fires after these hit the shelves. The butter may cover the popcorn, but will it cover your fire insurance deductible?

We used to use an air popper with narry a burnt or unpopped kernel. It had an aluminum dish on top that fit an entire stick of butter; which was melted by the heat generated by the machine.

Ummm... I kinda want this. Anyone know how well it actually works?

Although my parents air popper from like 70s still works and doesn't burn / leave kernals. Maybe I will just go steal that from them instead.

@wasting_company_time: I bought a plastic microwave popcorn popper from Target for like 7 bucks a few years back, and never looked back. I use Olive Oil I infuse with ground pepper and ancho chiles to pop the corn, and it comes out with few Old Maids.

@szrimaging: I once read an article about the popcorn corn industry and how hull thickness can affect popping performance, etc... I'm sort of like that chick from "Space Camp", but not as cute, and my skill doesn't apply to things I actually need.

@BoinK: If you can't see through the popcorn...there isn't enough butter.

I wonder when someone will invent a gadget that makes sure that the theater popcorn butter is evenly distributed throughout the whole bag instead of just hitting the top layer.

@winshape: some theaters used to have employees fill the bag half way do a butter layer then fill the rest of the bag and a butter layer on top. I don't get popcorn at the theaters anymore so I don't know if that's still practiced.

@logicalnoise: they'll still do this if you ask them - just ask them to layer it with buttery goodness and most of them will be happy to do it. Except in those places where it's self-serve buttery-goodness. I avoid those theaters.

Popcorn quality in movie theaters has gone down dramatically, and it really doesn't make any sense given that the popcorn is probably the highest profit margin item in their main source of income. It's a shame, and just one more thing that leads to the decline of the movie theater industry.
