Imagine how this could revolutionize Photoshopping. Just look at the image, visualize what you want it to look like, and presto! Photothought complete. #minddecoding
If you study neuroscience it's pretty obvious that something like this will never actually be able to show "what you're thinking." Indeed, given a particular stimuli there may be similarities in the MRIs and fMRIs of different subjects' brain activities, and there very well may be broad patterns that will indicate "this person is thinking about something visual" or "this person is thinking about something linguistic" but that's about it. The only correlation between different people's brains is that certain areas almost always end up being used for certain types of processing, but these are general, large areas. Actual thoughts are comprised within the particular connections, neurotransmitter thresholds, neuron behavior, flipping prions and whatever other systems operate within the brain we haven't figured out yet, and those are different between every person, and more importantly, constantly change within any given one person. It's the Homunculus Problem: the only way to accurately describe what a person is thinking "objectively" would be to build an equally complex system, another human brain basically, to observe and report, but that second system would be as unreliable as the first. #minddecoding
Our one true personal space is being compromised. I don't see this going down a road filled with gumdrop rainbows. I can see this turning into Minority Report. "Sir/ma'am, you are under arrest for the thought of killing another person."
Now, I can see a benefit of this also; sometimes it's difficult to fully explain something to somebody, so I use the phrase "I can see it in my head..." With this technology, I can say "Here, let me show you."
But one of the beauties of human interaction is thinking then explaining; having a dialogue with others. This could have a negative effect (or is it affect, I can never get those straight.) on verbal communication.
This also reminds of the movie The Final Cut with Robin Williams; okay movie, pretty good premise. #minddecoding
My lesdyxia made me see this headline as "Brian scans will soon reveal exactly what youre thinking" and I thought, wow, Blam will be able to read our minds....
I understand that Rosa Golijan may be kinda new at Giz, but I constantly find myself really enjoying her articles. So why is she nowhere to be found on the left hand column with all the other editors/columnists/interns?
How is going to filter out the "porn" thoughts circulating through people minds 95% of the time? (yes, even while gaming.) If it cant filter it, this could change the face of gaming forever.

So, what you're telling me, is that George Orwell was only 25 years off?
Not too shabby. #minddecoding
