does any think there's a conspiracy and that windows 7 is really a rollback of vista back to xp with bells and whistles? that's why it runs so fast, esp. on a netbook?
@sbrown23: Don't worry about him, he's just a jealous fanboi, all you have to do is clear the reality distortion field a little and they scatter like cockroaches...
Running Vista on a Netbook would turn me into Turrets Man... The endless stream of curse words, references to my dick, and the occasional exclamation of, "Bitch! I love you!" While I'm cleaning up the mess of crap off the floor after my wife grew tired of my tirade.
Except for that part where my damn fingers don't fit the damn keyboard I LIKE the idea of a netbook. The fact that you cannot seem to move beyond 1 gig of ram makes the system seem painfully inadequate from the get-go.
Anyway, thanks for the review BOB SAGET, I'm thinking maybe netbook technology just isn't quite advanced enough yet for my needs. Even w/ Windows 7.
Now i'm curious you're putting the blame on the atom processing chip? Is there a reasoning for that? Like i would think the biggest problem first would be the 1 gig of ram the computer is running on.
The problem with the video playback isn't windows 7, its WMP12 and the microsoft codecs. For some reason (at least for me), manually deleting the MS codecs and installing ffdshow, coreAVC and the haali media splitter gives flaweless playback on my netbook on 1.2ghz (on my atom!)
But I had to manually remove the MS codecs!
also, With media player classic, it'll play HD (1080!) without skipping at 1.6ghz
Hi everyone i have a dual boot on my new hp mini 1020la xp and 7, when i start xp it last about 2 min i think its because the slow HD, but with windows 7 just 45 seconds!! and aero running, i think microsoft it making good decisions with 7 but we dont have to pay another 150 bucks for 7 , vista really sucks... dont u agree?
I've got one asus ACPI error message on startup, but that was my fault and it's not enough of a bother to change the driver back to the MS version (which it had originally)
Don't ask me how i made it, but i survived twenty months of Vista on my lowly Toshiba A100 1.7 Celeron with 1GB RAM. Some days i would literally yell curse words in rapidfire succession because of it.
With the Windows 7 Beta i've almost lost the potty mouth, with now only the occasional "For fuck's sakes..."
So Mark, as a future netbook (with Windows 7) purchaser what specs whould you suggest to get Windows 7 running full steam with the fancy aero and the like?
@Thats Dr Bear to You: I haven't tested the minimum requirements of Aero, but I wouldn't expect it to run smoothly on any current Atom netbooks without graphics cards.
@Mark Wilson: Isn't this Aero thing just the glass effects, stupid Windows-tab browser and the preview windows? Is there any thing else I'm missing?
I have Windows 7 Beta installed on my HP Mini 1000 and it runs smooth as silk, with all the above mentioned features working perfectly. I even start a video (children of men - good movie!) and had it running in the background with other two other applications running, and was able to mouse over the media player icon on the taskbar and see the video playing in that tiny preview window. Everything works great. Is there some other Aero feature I don't know about that I should test?
BTW the HP Mini 1000 has the integrated graphics chip same as all the other Atom based netbooks AFAIK. I do have 2 GB of RAM installed though.

Why would you pay for an UPGRADE as a new OS rather than taking this as an SP update for Vista.
They have juck cleaned up their massy data links and craps from vista which they should have done long back.
Do a "Show hidden files, folders and drives" for both vista and win7 for main drive and you will see the difference.
What is the selling point for W7 ? new colored look ??

I just waited until they got "Vista" right, I'm using it right now in fact, and it is b-e-a-utiful.

I haven't even noticed any speed drops between 7 and XP, and I'm dual booting.
I'm totally sold on it.
