Lol fail. Micro USB is now the "accepted standard" for mobile phones not mini USB. Sendstation and Giz, shame on you. And €30, what? They think they're Apple or something?
I still have an original firewire version of this that i got when they randomly were giving them away for the cost of shipping. I hasn't been used once.
@ethanlechcharles: Firewire wasn't really a hassle for the first two gen iPods, obviously due to the built-in port. After the dock connector came in, though, I started to sense that FW was going to be dropped eventually for the iPods.
Anyways, did they make the port into a iLink one? Kind of useless, IMO.
I don't know if this is to scale, but if the reader is that close to the end, that'd be tucked neatly behind my computer because I'm a mite OCD about cables being visible. I'd never use it if it were all the way back there.
Sometimes an idea so simple takes way to long to come to market.
I think they should modify the casing of the reader a little bit, and either make it like Kaiser describes above, or hide it as an inline fuse. Either way, I think I need to order one of these for the office.
@the new face of racial america: Yeah, I am feeling that, its like "Oh wow, another useless USB thingamajig from Brando." But then I realize this genuinely is adding additional functionality without taking up additional resources...
But I just don't ever handle SD cards directly, I just plug in the device that contains them...
@the new face of racial america: I'll give you a reason. Buy SanDisk's SD+USB cards, which fold in half to convert to a standard USB drive, and your transfer speeds will skyrocket compared to anything you're going to get through a standard SD reader (that includes devices that use SD cards, like cameras and phones). Now, for Mini-SD and Micro-SD, you're pretty much screwed. They aren't big enough to fit a USB slot.
There's a Micro? I call Shenanigans. This is complete and unadulterated Bullshit. in what world would a micro work that couldn't handle the mini? you lost a whole one mm in thickness - whoopee freaking doo. this is just further evidence of the global electronics system sticking it to the man!
Fuck you GSM Association and the horse you rode in on.
Yes it reduces waste, but now devices won't come with a "free" charger anymore. They'll just assume you already have one, or make you buy one at a ridiculous markup (anything over $4 for one of these things is a complete ripoff) Do you think the manufacturers are going to pass on the savings to consumers? Probably not.
What I see happening though is what Motorola does with their crappy Motorola Q. The port is mini-usb but you cannot use just any old usb charger with it. It's very annoying!
@satoru: I own a Q9m, and it charges just fine on anything with a mini USB connection. I have successfully charged it with a wall wart, car adapter, and my laptop.
@satoru: There is usually a hack you have to perform to unlock that behavior, that is one of the worst things I have ever seen a manufacturer do to their phones...
A previous room-mate of mine had a VZW Razor that would ONLY charge on a Motorola mini-USB wall charger. I had a T-Mobile MDA at the time (also used mini-USB to charge), if my roommate plugged his razor into my phone's charger it would show a little window on the screen saying "Unauthorized Charger" or something, and it wouldn't charge...
My Omnia comes with a tone of cool accessories, but Ghod help me if any of them fails, because each and every one has that stupid proprietary Samsung connector on it.
Micro USB isn't my favorite, but it'll do JUST FINE!!

Micro might be the standard for phones, but for general gadgets, I'm pretty sure it's still Mini.

- sony digicam
- ps3 controllers
- external passport drives
- memory card readers
all mini usb. mini ain't goin nowhere no time soon.

Your front USB ports must be pretty lonely.

I only need so many, wasn't the point to reduce waste? Fewer chargers manufactured = less waste...
