So if I can get OTA broadcast channels like NBC and ABC and Fox, then I can watch Hulu without being on the internet right? Because those channels all broadcast Hulu content.
An absolute economic boom is just around the corner. Consumers will buy all sorts of hand held gadgets over the next few years. Internet 2.0 has finally arrived. Paper books, newsletters, newspapers and the US Mail service are toast. Consumers will save about 80 billion dollars per year on mail service alone!
@Jack Miller: Electronics are typically built overseas. Credit card companies are re-evaluating credit lines in light of the soon-to-be signed Credit Card Reform Bill, which, among other things prohibits extending credit cards to people below 21 unless they can prove that they are sufficiently solvent.
Additionally, electronics stores are slowing down because gadgets are discretionary spending. And people are reevaluating their buying priorities. Or haven't you heard of Circuit City?
Moreover, the target gadget demographic just all went running to grad school to wait out a terrible job market and will emerge even further in student loan debt.
Web 2.0 still hasn't figured out a viable business model that won't anger people who don't want to pay and don't want to see ads. Or haven't you heard of the NYTimes (failed Times Select subscription and people still unwilling to pay for online access), Facebook (maligned Beacon service which would have provided revenue) and Twitter (maligned SMS message service which would provide revenue)?
eBooks are still in the infancy and need to figure out how to avoid piracy. Newspapers are failing in no small part because of Craigslist, which offers largely free classified ad services (formerly newspapers' bread-and-butter). The USPS is by and large self-sufficient.
And those gadgets that you believe will drive the US economy - they have to get shipped from Shanghai to your doorstep somehow.
I was just talking to a friend about how TV tuner cards in computers are so 5 years ago. Dell should be focusing on getting 3G mobile broadband capability, not TV tuner capability.
@iwantcokeinabottle: The average customer does not want or need 3G in their laptops. I can think of several people who would like to easily watch TV through their computer though.
@Dafrety: yes, people want to watch tv, but not through a tuner card. Do you actually know anyone with a TV tuner card installed in their PC? It is old technology and completely unnecessary considering the same content can be delivered through the web easier and cheaper.
Seriously, why would you want a laptop that has a tv tuner card? If you're in a hotel, how exactly does that benefit you?
I don't understand why a licensing deal would force them to fix the RAM. Why not just, you know, NOT offer the extra ram as BTO, per their agreement, and allow us lovely patrons to do the upgrading ourselves?
I still find it odd that everyone is making a big deal about it being able to do 720p but it still doesn't even have plans for an option of blu-ray. It's not even like Dell is pulling an Apple and avoiding blu-ray in their computers.
@Dirkfart Faeclefunk: I would think that having HD in the name would mean that it is capable of displaying an HD picture... but that's just me. Maybe I'm crazy.
@WB: @adhir: "slice" usually means a unit that attaches to the bottom, meant to look like part of the laptop's case. Often used for batteries, and sometiems for expansion of ports and drives.
