@dark42: I'm surprised we haven't seen SMS ads from them.
It would have to be pretty specific. I doubt google is going to start spaming the phones of America but if you've ever used their google 411 (googl) text service it seems like not only an easy but fair place to throw in a SMS ad. #googleadmob
One more step on the way to Global domination.... Oh how I hate you Google. Yet, I love your innovation. I am doomed to a life of redundancy... I am Jack's angry checksum.
@Poop Cooper: You took the words right out of my mouth. If your mobile device supports the Iframe tag in the browser, there are sites you can use as a psudo-proxy that strip ads from many of the most popular sites. You do sacrifice the top 30 pixels for their custom searches (several are google custom searches). But you can't use the built-in address bar. Still, it's a portable, multi-platform, no-install solution.
If the editors here are looking for stories, it would be nice to see a run-down on some of the mobile friendly ad strippers. #googleadmob
Asking why Google wouldn't want to promote their own product is ridiculous. To be honest. After that whole Blackberry storm 2 thing you guys put up, this is the worst tech site on the internet. How is Kotaku so good. And this so bad. #googlehomepagedroidad
@kyle2dotcom: Google has/had a policy of not showing any advertisements the user wouldn't want to see, only advertising on the results page with ads that are relevant to your search. But, I guess, if you're on the Google homepage, you could argue that this ad is relevant.
Regardless, I do think your missing the point of this post. It's not that Google is advertising. It's that there's an ad on the homepage.
One more thing: In Giz's Storm 2 review, they recommended the Droid. #googlehomepagedroidad
I don't know why this is such a big deal. Are you really demonizing Google for telling people about products they had a hand in creating? #googlehomepagedroidad
I understand your point and its a fairly good point. With that said, quityerbitchen
I have been to the G homepage a few times today and I did not notice the add until reading this article. G is still minimalist and Android is G. #googlehomepagedroidad
@justsomereportingguy: I agree with Rosa. I don't think she's bitchin at all, just observin.
I too noticed the ad and was surprised.
Google has gone to extremes to make its home page obsessively minimalist. In this crazy crazy world, Google's home page is one of the few things people can rely on, its simplicity giving joy and hope to countless people all over the world, and so even the slightest change is jarring. #googlehomepagedroidad
Don't worry, Rosa - they just added the ad because they were feeling lucky. Besides, clearly Ernie and Burt are supervising the gig now, and how could you mistrust Ernie and Burt? Of course, without the rubber ducky, they are a little bit suspect, I suppose. #googlehomepagedroidad
I been to the homepage today and not even noticed. I really like that. It's nice when ads are not intrusive, annoying things that take longer to load than the page itself. #googlehomepagedroidad
I'm shocked - SHOCKED! - that a global corporation that derives the bulk of its revenue from advertising would stoop so low as to advertise a product. #googlehomepagedroidad
Well, the minimalist homepage is still there for me. Stuff only shows up when I move my cursor. Ad included.
And unless I'm mistaken (and I could be, I rarely hit the actual Google homepage), that spot typically has a link to some kind of Google service or another with a Learn More link. Only difference is this is one of the few that costs money.
Call me crazy, but I've seen worse things. You know, like Windows coming bundled with Internet Explorer. Or baby kittens playing in a paper bag. Or happiness.
