Asus Announces 800MHz 'World's Fastest' Smartphone

Asus is laying claim to the title for the fastest smartphone in the world, and there's little reason to doubt them. The news, though, is hollow: P565 with its 800MHz Marvell processor is objectively impressive, but underneath the oppressive, unflattering veil of Windows Mobile 6.1 it's not likely to blow anyone away. Carrying a dense 480x640 touchscreen to complement a solid range of specs — HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS and 24fps video recording to name a few — the P565 is nonetheless fighting a software war with hardware improvements. On the other hand, if you're one of those odd folks for whom any superlative is an automatic selling point, then this may be your ultimate handset. [Reg Hardware]

Mobile Broadband Finally Gets a Logo, But Is It a Cloud Or Seagulls?

Relax, people who've been using mobile broadband internet: your scarily unbranded 'net surfing days are over. The GSM Association has coordinated 3 Group, Asus, Dell, ECS, Ericsson, Gemalto, Lenovo, Microsoft, Orange, Qualcomm, Telefónica Europe, Telecom Italia, TeliaSonera, T-Mobile, Toshiba and Vodafone among others to create the "Mobile Broadband service mark." It's a logo designed to let consumers know the item they're using/seeing on the shelf in a store is a ready-to-run mobile internet device. But is it a cloud or a pair of seagulls? Hopefully the latter: you wouldn't want to run your precious laptop outside when rain is threatening. More »

Velocity Mobile 103 Smartphone Gets UK Launch Date, Pricing

We mentioned the Velocity 103 back in April, giving it a Q2 launch date. It looks like there've been a few delays to Velocity Mobile's entry to the smartphone market though, since the device is only now on pre-sale, with availability at the end of this month. It's a Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional device, featuring a proprietary "Velocity Over The Air" updating system to add functionality, Bluetooth, touchscreen and trackball control, and TV/VGA-out to connect to your TV. Its September launch is in the UK, where it costs a whopping $569, but there's no info no when it'll hit the US. [TheInquirer]

First Android Release Will Have iPhone-Style Crippled Bluetooth, No Google Talk

Over on the official Android Developers Blog, Googler Dan Morrill has news of what won't be making it into Android 1.0—a full featured-Bluetooth stack and data messaging via Google Talk API. Android 1.0 will work with Bluetooth headsets, but won't do other things like send files or link up to a PoGo printer, just like the iPhone. Google Talk will be missing completely. Thankfully, the reasoning behind both decisions seems to make sense: Google Talk's security is nowhere near where it needs to be in order to function as the core IM service for a huge mobile platform as intended, and a full Bluetooth API simply isn't done yet, but both should show up in future iterations. Apparently any frameworks in the 1.0 SDK would be impossible to greatly change down the road, so it sounds like Google's taking the smart route and not rushing out inferior code. How To Tether Your iPhone With NetShare

We've been covering NetShare a lot the last couple of days, and with good reason: Apple consciously left the ability to tether out of the iPhone, yet for some reason has no problem letting someone else sell an app that does just that. Some users, though, might find the concept of tethering confusing, or at least intimidating. It's actually quite straightforward, and the staff at Apple Insider has put together a really handy and detailed step-by-step guide that shows how in just a few minutes you can configure your MacBook (or other Wi-Fi device) to share your iPhone's internet connection so you can have truly mobile access anywhere you get coverage. FCC Head Wants to Bust Open Cable and the Internet (But Without Neutrality Rules)

A day before the FCC is expected to slap Comcast's Hellboy-like wrist, FCC Emperor Kevin Martin gave the the NYT his big hairy vision for openness for cable, wireless and the internet: He wants to set a "very high bar on what network operators can do in terms of putting limits on consumers.” But that doesn't mean he wants true net neutrality, or even actual rules, saying that “hard and fast rules can...have adverse impact.” More »

AT&T LaptopConnect Gets 20 Percent Speed Bump to 1.7Mbps Downstream, 1.2 Up

Users of AT&T's LaptopConnect should notice some more spring in their (already springy) virtual steps by the end of this month, courtesy of AT&T's rabid 3G build-out adding HSUPA to its existing HSDPA 3G network. (What?) Downstream speeds are now 700Kbps to 1.7Mbps, upstream is 500Kbps-1.2Mbps, a nice boost in upload speed. The catch is that you need the following data cards: AT&T USBConnect 881, Sierra Wireless AirCard 881, Option GT Ultra and Option GT Ultra Express. But if that's not fast enough, you can always pop into a Starbucks for unlimited free Wi-Fi. [AT&T]

AT&T to Use 700MHz Spectrum for High-Speed 4G LTE Network

The mandatory period of silence for 700MHz auction participants is over, so AT&T is revealing what's up their sleeve for the prem-o slice of spectrum on a conference call. AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega said that it'll give them more flexibility and bandwidth to handle surging demand for mobile broadband now and later; better coverage (like in buildings, thanks to the spectrum's sweet properties); and an "easier path to 4G technology," that being LTE (which Verizon is also in on). They'll primarily be using 700MHz for their LTE network, and since it's GSM based, 4G devices will be able to work in 2G and 3G areas. More »
