In theory.

It's a half-baked idea, of course, which is why we're only seeing it in a patent and not in actual hardware. Unless the half-keyboards were incredibly strong, the whole device would feel like it's itching to break into pieces, and wouldn't it have to be twice as thick as standard QWERTY sliders to accommodate double the amount of hardware? So it's just a patent, and it'll almost certainly stay that way. But at least somebody's trying to figure out a way to keep hardware keyboards alive. [Reg Hardware]

<![CDATA[iLounge 3G iPhone Mockups Run Gamut From Marvelous To Meh]]> We already have a pretty good idea of how the iPhone will work, from GPS, to faster network speeds, to how it will help raise you kids (lower prices), but it's always fun to see the crazy ideas people had in their heads for what they thought the new design should be. Wired roped up seven of the best, worst and impractical iPhone designs from iLounge, just in time for Monday's purported launch. Sure, this might be iPhone overload to the nth degree, but I think we can all agree Photochopping is the geek gift that keeps on giving (false hope).

These mock-ups were designed by iLounge readers. iLounge held held a competition to find the best ideas for the new iPhone. Best? Worst? You tell me—there's more at Wired to bash, praise or drool over. [Wired]

<![CDATA[Introducing the Gizmodo DIY Apple Product Mockup Kit]]> People love mockups of products, especially Apple products, and especially real-looking Apple products that they can delude themselves into believing are real. Who are we to argue with such desires? In order to help you all make the best, most realistic Apple fakes possible, we had our super-talented Artistic Intern Logan Lape make a DIY Apple Product Mockup Kit. Essentially, it's a Photoshop file full of layers of objects that you can use to make your very own BS Apple product. And that's just what we want you to do.

Simply download the kit here, open it up in Photoshop, and let your imagination go wild. As you can see, tt's pretty easy to make a nice looking fake iPhone 2 mockup with the kit. But don't feel like you need to stick to iPhones; go nuts! Make any product you can come up with using the kit, and send us your best results to contests@gizmodo.com with the subject "DIY Apple Mockup." I'll post the best entries here next Tuesday. Get crackin'!

<![CDATA[Carbon Fiber iPhone Mockup]]> iphonecarbon.jpgThis is a carbon fiber iPhone mockup that I normally wouldn't care about, but this one comes with a humorous story. Supposedly, Apple will be developing a special edition carbon fiber iPhone called the Carbon Electra X Apple iPhone. It will be limited to 200 units and be given away in the Oscars goodie bags. This is where the story gets iPhoney, but kind of funny.

In addition to the beautiful carbon fiber case, the phone will come pre-loaded with every M.O.P. song ever produced, every episode of Mythbusters and Rosario Dawson's cell number. There is also a custom software installed, approved by the FAA, that allows you to use your phone while on board any commercial airplane.
Who the hell is M.O.P? Regardless, it will also (not) be available for $700, 11-percent of which will be donated to the International TonTon Preservation Fund.
UPDATE: ENOUGH with the email. You know this isn't real, yes?

<![CDATA[Sony Ericsson Ai Concept Renderings]]> ericssonaithumbs.jpgIt seems we have gotten so obsessed with news and concept renderings of the iPhone that we forgot about other, more badass futuristic phones like the Sony Ericsson Ai. This phone may not have anything to do with Sony Ericsson, but the pictures definitely look pretty. This phone, supposedly going by the name "Ai," will carry the usual flavors of features including a 3.2-megapixel camera, FM radio, touch sensitive buttons and even include a 2GB hard drive. The mockups are done in two different versions: a candybar and a slider.

Maybe I'm just a little biased, but this is way cooler than all of the iPhone concepts that have been popping up.

<![CDATA[Yawn, Another iPhone Mockup Relating to Showtime]]>

Hell, we've posted every other damn mockup and rumor about today's Showtime event. Why stop now? This little flyer dropped into our inbox last night and appears to be in French. Anybody fluent enough to give us a little translation?

Our unofficial schedule has no mention of the iPhone, but this mock-up is on crumpled paper, and in French! So it has to be true! rolleyes.gif
