So if the online suite is free, why would people buy the software to install on their computers? With options like google docs and openoffice there's really no reason to use Office anymore. I do still use it however just because it came preinstalled.
@Purple Monkey Dishwasher: I wouldn't be surprised if they're online tools were at least slightly nerfed...a la google docs....and as for openoffice...while technically it is similarly powerful, until the UI is updated to look flashier as well, many mainstream people will judge that book by its cover and believe it to be a weaker alternative.
@piratelax40: Absolutely. They need to do something to keep the revenue stream going. However, the big money comes in from corporate licensing; which aren't likely to use a service like this.
@Purple Monkey Dishwasher: There's still a big difference between the immediacy and flexibility of Office vs. Google Apps. Desktop computing feels crisp compared to the gooeyness of the cloud. Sure, you can get work done, and improvements in bandwidth will level the playing field, but if I need to jot down a quick thought or ruminate about medieval cheese making for 300 pages, I'll always reach for the desktop. Word on the desktop is transparent and sturdy. Google docs gives me flashbacks of crab fishing in the Bering Sea.
@tok3ninja; is the best non-star commenter: Google docs actually refused to upload my resume until I copy-pasted its contents into a new file. Even then, I had to go and fix the indentations.
