Scientists always seemed excited and confused when confronted with new sounds. After all, the regular-interval pulses emanating from the first discovered pulsar (later understood as a rapidly spinning collapsed star) were such a shock they were named LGMs for "Little Green Men."

The sound discovered by this team is static from the early universe. Not that surprising that they don't immediately understand the source. Given my experience with Comcast and static, I wouldn't be surprised if they were to blame.

Damn it, guys - don't you watch the movies? Now you have listened in on their private conversation, they are gonna be pissed and send they ray guns and ion blaster to blow us to smithereens. And I had big plans for this year -- a nice trip to the beach, and was going to spend time fixing the upstairs bathroom. Now, all lost. Thanks a lot.

It isn't a sound. "Sound is vibration transmitted through a solid, liquid, or gas"

Indeed, the the original article talks about "radio noise" and a "signal" and makes no mention of it being a sound.

Please use the correct terminology, sound cannot be transmitted through the near vacuum of outer space.

@Matt: Astronomers are notorious for stretching the definition of what constitutes "sound" when discussing waves in space.

Nothing is more more excited than Jason Chen at the Las Vegas' Adult Entertainment Expo.... I still remember last years posts...Oh god.

Seriously, what the hell could this be? Maybe this is the radio background hiss equivalent to a pressure wave that was a result of the creation of our bubble universe, and it just keeps reverbreating throughout?

@PalmPre_GitEmSteveDave: don't worry about it too much. I think it's just intergalactic gangsters with the bass turned up way too loud. We need to send Clint Eastwood out there to quiet things down...
