@EBone: Nobody knows. Cyanogen is currently working on getting it to those with rooted phones but Qualcomm apparently hasn't released the drivers for it. But nobody knows if Google will do so officially.
@MarcusMaximus: This is what worries me about Android. While many complain about the closed Apple system, since Apple controls the hardware and software, even the older handsets get the new OS (minus a few hardware dependent features like compass).
With so many different hardware-specific tweaked versions of Android, you have to rely on the manufacturer to re-tailor the latest OS to their hardware. What if they decide they just don't want to? For instance, the Motorola Cliq would require a pretty refined upgrade for their custom software overlay. And if the Cliq didn't meet Moto's sales goals, they probably won't bother.
I guess only a *true* Google-branded phone would get all the upgrades. But then again, wasn't the G1 a Google branded phone?
@EBone: The G1 is a Google branded phone. There's also no word yet on just when or if it might get 2.0. I'm not exactly sure why, but for some reason the Droid get early dibs on Eclair. The source code didn't even drop until after the Droid was released.
Earlier this year, Google said there'd be at least 2 new updates this year. For what that's worth, and for whoever that's referring to, we may never know. T-Mobile/HTC haven't said anything for certain about the G1 not getting Eclair, so it may happen yet.
I will say this, though, as annoying as it is that each carrier has to modify it for their own handsets, they at least have the motivation of an lively group of early adopter nipping at their heels. ;-)
Hopefully each manufacturer will take the same approach HTC is and make a single UI for each of their phones, so they don't have to keep retweaking Android for each handset.
Wood is beautiful. Metal is beautiful. Plastic can be beautiful. Plastic painted to look like wood is tacky (see station wagons). Plastic painted to look like metal is also tacky but less obvious.
The original Zune was a good use of plastic, true to the material.

@secretmanofagent: Touché salesman. That is a much better finish, and a much better match. I hope tmo hands out LP stickers to cover up the silly Fender logo (and a personal apology to my Fender and my PRS).
I've been rocking the HERO OS on my G1 for a week or so now and can honestly say I don't know why you would want to use anything else. I wish they would come out with a HERO phone with a qwerty is all I'm sayin..
You know I've tripped a lot of circuits, oh lord I've maxed a lot of capacitors; but I never touched nothing that my logic board could kill.
you know I've seen a lot of machine intelligences ambulating around with BSODs in their eyes, but the pusherbot don't care if you simulate life or if your main-board fries.
@cudthecrud: why would you do that when Cyanogen's ROM still gives you functions that the legit 1.6 update isn't going to give you? Apps2SD ALONE is reason enough for me not to give a rat's ass for the legit update.
@cudthecrud: Just give it a few weeks and i'm sure there will be a cyanogen update with all those extras put in there (if they're any better than what it's already packaged in 4.0.4).
@Bloodbeard: same here. Been running Donut in one form or another for weeks thanks to Cyanogen. Overall it's good, new camera blows though. It runs faster when a lot of things aren't going on in the background. It's great when you're trying to do something, like, send a text message while on the phone through bluetooth but you have some other crap running in the background.
Ahhhh Android....so much potential, hamstrung by shit hardware....thanks HTC...really, I mean it thanks for the brillance that is the G1.
I ordered mine tuesday - called just now to 1-877-453-1304 (tmo support) went through prompts - when asked what i wanted said "account specialist" few more prompts was with a account specialist.
I said I ordered my phone a couple days ago and saw Oprah was giving $100 off promo and wanted to know if I could be applied to my order. The lady worked her magic and viola - $100 code applied!! so might be worth a call if already ordered one!

The original Zune was a good use of plastic, true to the material.
The MacBook pro is a good use of metal and glass.
Docomo's Touch Wood is a good use of wood.
When in doubt, just copy those above.

But I totally agree with the route you're going here. A phone would look really good with f holes.
