iPhone Conquers 16.6 Percent of World Smartphone Market

Nokia N96 Media-Cameraphone Lands at Best Buy For $800

News of the European debut and pricing of Nokia's anticipated N96 slider cellphone stirred up debate about its cost: but now it's nearly here in Best Buy and yes, that $800 price tag is intact. That's clearly just for the phone, naked and un-contracted to a provider, but it's a massive amount of cash—half as much again as an unsubsidized Blackberry Bold. If you're skeptical but want to check out if the beast is worth 800 smackeroos, there'll be hands-on display units in some stores apparently. [BGR]

Nokia's N96 Has European Debut, $800 Price Ticket

Nokia's much rumored, much anticipated N96 slider has just had its debut—in Europe. It's on sale for €550, or around $798 (yes, this is obviously the unsubsidized price—before tax, too). And though there's no firm info on the US launch timing or prices, this is a good indicator it's on its way. [Nokia]

    Nokia's N96 Now Official, Quad-Band and HSDPA

After much leaking of information, Nokia's N96 slider cellphone is now official. It's a quad-band, US 3G-enabled (WCDMA) phone with a 2.8-inch screen, 16GB of built-in memory, a 5-megapixel Carl-Zeiss Tessar lens, A-GPS and 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi. The media-player functions of the phone get their own dedicated slide-out keypad, as we knew. It's due out in the last quarter of the year, and pricing is estimated by Nokia at around $810. Forthcoming Nokia N85 Slider Looks Like It's Getting U.S. 3G

Nokia loves to tempt U.S. folks with hot 3G N-Series phones that only work in Europe, before releasing a U.S. version several months later like they did with the N95. But according to FCC clearances, it looks like a version of the forthcoming N85 slider (N96's little cousin that isn't $1,200) with full tri-band WCDMA support is going to hit North America, which means AT&T users are in luck. Sorry T-Mobile folks still waiting for the rollout—looks like no 1700MHz support. [Unwiredview]

    Nokia N96 Available for Preorder, Due 7/31 for… $1,200?!

Nokia's upcoming N96 monsterphone might justbe coming out on July 31st with the wha-wha-whaaaa inducing pricetag of $1,200 if Play.com is to be believed. At least that's what the pre-release price is on that site — Nokia's estimated retail price is $800. That's still a bonkers price to pay for a phone, but it's significantly less bonkers than $1,200. In any case, 7/31 seems as good a date as any for the N96 to drop. We'll see if that actually happens. [Play.com via Symbian Guru]

    Nokia N96 Hands-On: Basically a Video Oriented N95

The N95 smartphone just does fine with its video playback. But the N96's 16GB of internal memory, slightly bigger 2.8-inch screen, DVB TV tuner, special video browsing UI and kickstand make it better than its pappy. More »

The Nokia N96 Super Cellphone is Official: Gallery and Specs Here

The N96 is pretty similar to the Symbian 60-powered N95 we've all come to recognize as Nokia's 5MP GPS finest, but with 16GB of internal memory and a 2.8-inch screen. This model also has a built-in DVB-H receiver for digital TV signals in Europe and Asia, and a kickstand for desktop viewing. Also new are the backlit touchbuttons on the face, dialpad and top slider section of the phone. When playing media, they show the typical play/pause/ff/rr functions; when gaming on the N-Gage gaming platform, they show control pad buttons. Approx $800, but likely no US 3G support. More »

Nokia N96 Rendering Looks Fake, But Interesting

GSMhelpdesk.nl has some renders of what could possible be (but probably isn't) the Nokia N96. These renders show a 3.2-inch, 16 million color touchscreen display, a dual-sliding QWERTY keyboard, and a one-way sliding dialpad keyboard. There's also a 6-megapixel camera on board, with 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth 2.0. What's really cool about this rendering is the dual-sliding keyboard—the major thing that's missing from the current Nokia N95 models. (Notice it works upside down? Guess there's theoretically an accelerometer in there for direction sensing.) [gsmhelpdesk via Esato via Mobile Mentalism via Switched] More »
