I was in Finland TEN YEARS AGO and they already had something similar to this. You could call a number on a soda machine, hit the button and it charged your account. Even with the new boss in DC I'm wondering if the US is capable of moving forward. Too many people seem to want to keep things just as they are.
@Shoghon: Yeah, it's a shame that we live in a country that prides itself on being so technologically advanced, yet our broadband system is an embarassment compared to Europe and Asia... our mobile phone networks are absolutely horrendous... and things like this are so far away from where we are currently that nobody even thinks about it... or if they do, they think it just sounds absurd. It's really sad, and while I realize this is probably an absurdly hopeful statement, I really hope that Obama (being the proponent for technology that he is) is able to push our country forward in that regard.
I'm trying to be a cash-only guy. It's not about paranoia; it's about seeing where my money is going.
When you use a check-card, most vendors prefer you use it as a debit card so they don't get charged a transaction fee by Visa/Mastercard. However, many banks then charge YOU a fee. I learned this the hard way when I saw a whole lot of $.25 fees on my bank statement.
I take out cash about once a week. It helps control spending too. I just don't feel the need to pay to spend my money.
In principle this could be pretty cool, but it would never work in execution. We can't be trusted with have money in little plastic cards much less cell phones that dont even represent a monetary value. When you pull out a credit card, you know your spending money, because thats what the cards are for. But when you pull out a cell phone, whcih is decidedly not for paying for things, you lose that thought of "do i really need to buy this?" instead you just swipe and then end up in debt after you keep piling charges on it.
@Ozymandias: your kind of missing the point. you could have said the same thing about credit cards when they first appeared. "people arent paying using money anymore, they are just using a piece of plastic! arent they going to be irresponsible?"
People will always be irresponsible, that doesn't mean we should stop progress. To be honest the only issue is one of security. And to the point of Americans in specific not being responsible with money... get your head out of your nationalist ass please.
@pevans34: Do you even watch the news? Do you not realize that Americans are the number 1 most irresponsible country in the WORLD when it comes to their financial well-being? Stop ignoring the facts and name-calling and do something a little more productive. Ignoring the problem doesn't make it go away.
@cloudnine: HAHAHA, cc/cellphone, I fail to see how being able to pay with one v. the other would make any difference what so ever.
Now if the CC companies decided that they were only going to allow us to use rfid embedded dildos to pay for things, then we might see a small decline in credit purchases...

Just so you know, your string of posts on this thread make you sound like an ill-informed malcontent...
Just so you know. ;)
