<![CDATA[Hands On: The iPod Nano Video Interface Is Smooooooth]]> It's cheap and it's small. But how does the new iPod nano's video actually work? Check out our interface clip here.

I'll admit, the UI performance is impressive. The loading animation scales at a very high framerate, and then four video filters can be previewed at once—in real time. Sure, X-ray and Cyborg footage is too hokey for most of us to ever actually shoot with, but Apple's certainly made the experience painless enough...you know, other than on your eyes.

<![CDATA[The New iPod Nano Shoots Video, Plays Radio]]> As well-documented by the "word on the street," the fifth generation iPod nano is also a video camera...and radio and a pedometer and a voice recorder too...and it's available today. Details:

• Video camera (640x480)
• NO STILL CAMERA
• Integrated mic
• Integrated speaker
• FM Radio!!!!! That you can pause!! And iTunes tag!
• One-click YouTube uploads (through your computer)
• Voice Over like Shuffle
• Pedometer with Nike+ syncing online
• Voice Recorder
• 2.2-inch screen that's .2 inches larger than last model

Starting today, the 8GB nano will cost $150 while the 16GB comes in at $180. (So why buy the 8?) What's the biggest surprise here? The camera we knew about. But the radio? The video support? The total lack of still camera support? I do have to admit, however, if it's this or a Flip, the nano is certainly more tempting.

Apple Introduces New iPod nano With Built-in Video Camera

World's Most Popular Music Player Now Available in Nine Brilliant Colors

<![CDATA[All the Apple Event Rumors: Is It Only Rock and Roll?]]> This Wednesday Apple is having an event titled It's Only Rock and Roll, but we like it. I'm sucker for the Stones, but only rock and roll? Here is the complete guide to all the rumors and midnight ramblings:

Most likely

New iPod touch: All iPod models have been discontinued in the stock databases, so new units are a given, even if they arrive to the shops later than expected. The only question is the feature set. Would it have a new camera? Looks very likely, as new cases pop absolutely everywhere. New storage capacities? It is a very strong possibility. A new processor, once again leapfrogging the iPhone? Perhaps new materials? We will see about that.

• New iPod nano: Like the iPod touch, the nano will see an update, adding a camera to it. We still don't know if anything physical will change, but it's not likely, looking at the multiple cases.

• New album features: This one was confirmed by the record labels—although Apple always has the last word on what goes into each release. It seems they have been jointly developing new interactive features to encourage the purchase of full albums. The project is called Cocktail, and it's aimed to "reproduce the album experience." It may be new glorified PDF-like documents, or some interactive stuff. I don't know about you, but if it's something I can't touch, I can't get no satisfaction.

Likely

• New iPhone OS update: Knowing that a new iPod touch is coming, and about the new features in Cocktail, a new iPhone OS 3.1 update will probably be a must too.

• The end of the classic iPod: Looking at the sinking sales of the big honky tonk iPods, this may be their end, hopefully getting replaced by a 64GB iPod touch. As much as I loved it—had every single model until the iPhone came—it's time to leave them in the memory motel.

Unlikely

• Apple tablet: We had high hopes for this one, but unless Apple decides to pull a rabbit out of their magic hat at the last second, it looks like the the fabled Apple tablet is not going to happen this time. You can't always get what you want, but you can get what you need.

• Beatles remastered: As much as I want this to happen—and even while tomorrow The Beatles Remastered box sets will be released—I don't think the Beatles on iTunes is on the cards. This rumor comes again and again, every single year, and it never gets realized. This year, look at the invitation. There is no way that Apple would have used the Rolling Stones if the Beatles were coming to the iTunes Music Store. In fact, if sounds like Steve's way of saying: "Fuck it, we need no bloody Beatles, innit?"

The One More Thing

• You know us and our sympathy for the devil: We are all still holding our breaths to see Steve back in the show and tell game. If he doesn't, we are going to pass out. So let's spend the day together, Mr. Jobs.

<![CDATA[Apple Is So Creative]]> One of the things I was really blown away by yesterday was the sheer number of colors in the new iPod rainbow. I don't think I've ever seen that many hues of an MP3 Player. Where did they get them all??

Apple was the first one to bring out around five colors (the 2G nano), but Creative then followed up with what you see above. Lots. More than five. Ten. That's like, double five. Apple's 4G nanos have nine. One less than ten. But Apple's are more vibrant in their marketing shots.

<![CDATA[The New iPod Nano: It's Skinny Again]]>

The world was fairly certain that the latest generation of iPod nano had ditched its squat appearance for another growth spurt, but today in San Francisco, Steve Jobs confirmed the rumor as fact on stage: The fourth generation iPod nano is indeed skinny again and it features an accelerometer. Innovation or identity crisis, here are the complete details on the device that's available now:

Form Factor
The new nano is tall like the original nano, but it's also curved like the iPhone. Available in 9 colors (silver, gunmetal, purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red and pink.)

Storage/Pricing
The entire nano line has been bumped in storage under the same price points we already know, now supporting 8GB for $150 and 16GB for $199.

Voice Recorder
Woo! (Scroll down, appears to be in headphones)

Control
Integrated accelerometer notices landscape mode for Cover Flow, photos and video, and it allows the nano to be shaken to shuffle a random track. Holding the center button during a song brings up the Genius menu.

Battery Life
24 hours of music, 4 hours of video. Sounds similar to the old nano.

New Headphones
Include micro remote and microphone.

Green
The new nano is arsenic-free , bfr-free, mercury free, pvc free, and "highly recyclable."

<![CDATA[Last Minute Apple Leaks on New iPod Nano, Shuffle, Classic and Touch?]]> AppleInsider claims to have two independent sources confirming identical information about upcoming Apple iPod refreshes. The biggest overhaul appears to be on the iPod nano, which would explain all of the rumors we've seen on the device. It will come in nine colors and be the first non-touch iPod to support a motion/orientation sensor.

Shaking the player activates Shuffle Mode and tilting allows scanning of Cover Flow when the nano is held in landscape. The nano's storage will jump to 8GB and 16GB.

Not a lot of information on the iPod classic and iPod shuffle. The classic is said to come in two colors (probably white silver and black) with the shuffle available in five colors.

The iPod touch will have no color choices and retain the same storage options of 8, 16 and 32GB.

Oh, and the last juicy tidbit from the rumors: The new iPods are supposed to be available at Apple stores today. [AppleInsider]

<![CDATA[First Look at New iPod Nano Interface?]]>

We have received these two images of the iPod nano showing a new interface. They look like Apple's own product illustrations and the iPod itself looks like the unconfirmed leaked picture, but of course we don't know if they are real or not. They are so polished and we like them so much that we hope they are real, but for now, they are just a couple of images out of nowhere. Check the playback screen after the jump and tell us what you think.

We will see what happens in a few hours. Remember our first rules about rumors and leaks: never trust them, even when they seem like the real McCoy. UPDATE: The first screen was way off, second screen close, and overall rendering spot-on. Check out our hands-on with the real thing. [Thanks tipster!]

<![CDATA[What Is Going to Happen at the Apple Let's Rock Event?]]> Hoo-kai. We are almost there. The usual suspects are voicing their last minute, most obvious predictions for what is looking like the most boring event in Apple's history ever. At least, since Gil Amelio decided to give an exclusive interview to The Minnesota Carpets Quarterly Journal on the new flooring at One Infinite Loop. New colors, roomier iPod nano this, updated iPod touch that, flashy iTunes visualizer that other thing... Hereto we present you with the things that we think are going to happen today for sure, straight from our Rumor-a-thing machine. Pick yours and vote in our Special Giz Event "Let's Poll!" Poll:

The Apple Store is still up. Maybe there are going to be no new products today. I can already hear Steve:

Welcome to our Let's Rock event... SUCKAS! Hahahaha. You wanted to rock? Well, big news today! Phil, John and myself are going to form a band with John Mayer! And we are going to call ourselves: THE BEATLES! SUE MY ASS PAUL MCCARTNEY! Hit me on three, Phil!

Too bad that won't happen, because that would have been the best event in Apple history. Ever.

<![CDATA[The Mystery of iPod Nano Spy Photos]]> Yesterday we said that the leaked iPod nano shot looked real to us. After all, Apple seems to be going through its curved surfaces and tapered edges period. This new shot of this old-green-lime colored one however is a completely different beast.

• First, the proportions in the green one are all wrong compared to the orange one. Even counting the perspective, the first unit seems to have a much smaller wheel, with a bigger middle button. It's also farther away from the bottom of the iPod. Finally, the screen doesn't seem so elongated as the green unit.

• The surfaces are also different. The orange nano is clearly curved, while the green one is clearly flat. The button in the orange one follows the curve of the surface, while the button in the green one is clearly receded, like in the old nanos. With that side lighting, a curved surface would be obvious in the image. This one is clearly flat.

• The rounded corners on the orange iPod screen are bigger and more obvious than in the old one.

• Finally, the faker of the green iPod forgot to put a short ended iPod cable in the shot, using the old style one.

Our theory is that:

a) The original MacNN shot, which they obtained, may very well be the real McCoy.
b) The J.R. guy removed the MacNN watermark and reposted it in some forums, looking for some kind attention.
c) The same J.R. guy tried to keep the attention by faking this shot, but failed to realize the obvious physical differences between the two iPods.
d) J.R. is a loser.

Update: This just in. We just got a higher resolution image of the iPod without any water marks:

At the end, however, remember our basic rule about rumors: don't trust any of them. We all will have to wait for September 9 to see what's really rocking in Cupertino. [Engadget]

<![CDATA[More Cases Essentially Confirm New iPod Nano]]> Sure, we've seen "new iPod nano" cases before. But they were shrouded in the potentially illegitimate fog of Chinese OEM. These new cases, spotted at IFA, are by Hama—a sizable accessory manufacturer out of Europe that's been in operation for over 50 years and now making that 4G iPod nano look like a pretty sure thing. Quick, give your loved ones your 3G nanos "out of the kindness of your heart" before it's too late! [Engadget Spain via gadget lab]

<![CDATA[New iPod Nano Mock-up Takes the Sting Out of the New iPod Nano]]> I can't speak for everyone in the room, but I'm not all that excited about the possibility of the iPod nano returning to its long, skinny origins. Originally repulsed by the latest iteration of nano, the deformed, squat body won me over the first time I actually held it in my hand. And it instantly made the styling of its thin predecessor seem like a vanity device—a lipstick-like accessory, not something designed to easily play my music. Anyway, these concept mock-ups by flickr's Umpa reminded me that skinny is still pretty hot. Widen the screen a tad and I might be sold, again. Bonus shot:

You see, putting Wall-E on the screen makes the concept oh so much more convincing. And adorable. [flickr Thanks Breno!]

<![CDATA[Is This Case for the New iPod Nano?]]> We're not sure whether this case is for the real upcoming iPod nano or it's just a speculative fabrication. but its elongated design mimics the same style of the Kevin Rose rendering that we came out last week. I'll tell you though, if Apple released a short, fat iPod just to go back to the tall, skinny design, it's confirmed—Jonathan Ive really is exploiting the public as part of some larger, demented bet with Steve Jobs.
