If you consider cracking a mini open as a difficult mod, then just stop. This is not a difficult upgrade by anymeans. Until your hand soldering to surface mount its not even remotely hard.

at least its better than the aluminum iMac and spider-man-like suction cups. I always feel silly removing the glass panel on those guys =/

Mind you, it actually costs Apple $180 to crack open the Mac mini, and the other $20 for the parts.

Makes my MSI Wind Barebones look absolutely spacious by comparison! Wow.

Looks like you can still do a little modding if you like though, so that's cool.

@kaubuchon: Yeah, but at least it comes with a single stick of RAM so if you want to upgrade to two, you only have to buy one stick.

Oh, wait. Mac and third party ram hate each other. Scratch that. You still have to buy two sticks and sell the other one.

So here's what you do folks. Get the $599 version, a 7200.4 from Newegg ($139) and your choice of RAM, which prices most 4GB configurations of 1066 DDR3 at around $63 for some Crucial RAM. Then for $801 instead of $799 you have 180GB more on a 7200 RPM drive as well as 4GB of RAM. Tada!

@citizensmith: That's the same deal for all manufacturers. I'd never upgrade directly ever, because dedicated parts retailers generally give you better deals than you get ordering direct.

@frigg: Yeah, it's actually amazing. The damn thing is half the price of the lower end unibody, and has FW800. The issue is Apple's compulsion to create a clearer divide between their products. Since the Mac Pro and iMac are both far more substantial systems than the Mini regardless of Firewire, they seem to have no issue giving it to that as well, but the Macbook and Macbook Pro are really close in terms of performance.

How much $$$ will the Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter/cable cost? FFS, why get rid of the DVI port?

Guess you didn't read the specs:

    ------------------

    Audio

    * Combined optical digital audio input/audio line in (minijack)

    * Combined optical digital audio output/headphone out (minijack)

    --------------------

Mac mini has had this for years. And HDMI can be achieved with a DVI to HDMI converter.

No, I was hoping they would knock down the Euro price as well at least 450€. Well, then again, 599 USD is 473€. At least if I buy one it will be 499€ with the tax already included.

i was hoping for the black design that had been posted here in jan. (Black plastic with the size of the Time Capsule and replaceable SATA disc drive).

@HJTravels: That's 2.0 GHz on the new chipset, with 1066 GHz and DDR3 RAM, so it's going to be faster than any of the previous tech with the same clockspeed.

What on earth will you be doing that this C2D and that this would be unusable?

@HJTravels: For all of you. I do more then just send e-mails and watch youtube. If any of you did anything more then just that you might need more processor also. The 4gb is an improvement but at least a 2.6 would be better. Even the Dell studio had a better processor.

@HJTravels: Which Dell Stupio? Do you mean the tower or the Hybrid? The Hybrid is the closest system to the Mini, and the current specs are inferior. It has the last gen chipset, which is about as powerful as the previous generation plastic Macbook.

This is like that guy I saw on the news once, who spent his free time probing that celebrity nude photos were fake. He said it was to save the good name of the ladies who were wronged, but I think he just liked to look at boobs.

Same thing with this guy. He just likes naughty pictures of ports, vents, and what not. Sicko.
