I am laughing my ass off as we speak...especially at the coolpix rants. I have a D300 and am a fanboy of their SLR lineup, but nikon has yet to produce a point and shoot anywhere near the quality/speed of the elph or powershot series.
A better comparison would be Nikon's D700 which has the same sensor and is going for as little as $1500 on the internet. I don't know if I would do business with anybody on the internet selling $3000 cameras for $1500 but there it is.
There's also a World of Warcraft: Paladin one as well. In fact, I think there's like 100 different paradise using this same movie footage. Then again, I can't watch this at work, so I'm only assuming it's all the same Hitler footage.
OK, if your number one concern is "best image quality"--and, frankly, why should your number one concern be anything else?--here's how it is likely to break down:
Ultra-Clean High ISO Images:
D3 and D700 (both full-frame 12MP)
Clean High ISO Images:
D300 (smaller sensor 12MP) and D3X (full-frame 24MP)
All other considerations are, to my mind, secondary.
@bosskev: Well, consider the fancy-pants noise eliminating Gremlins Nikon has been using lately; I think the D3x should have the same, if not better, clean High-ISO shots as the D3 (even though they are doubling the megapixelage on the sensor)
@bosskev: I agree. Their P6000 pro point-and-shoot was noisy as balls when it went to 15MP. I would've preferred a G10 rival at say 6MP that was ultra-clean.
