No biggie... the system has so little computing power that it can not only be emulated during its commercial lifetime on home PCs, but you can also set it to emulate in HD!
(I have never tried this though because I actually have a Wii...) #nintendowiihdrumors
@brkmrtn002: Haha, I've actually been playing my SNES recently too. Haven't touched the Wii in a looong time. Good ol' Donkey Kong Country 2 #nintendowiihdrumors
Bring on the black Wii. It's just a fresh look to increase sales.
But lets be honest the future of console gaming is HD content and online gaming. It's all about social networking and being able to connect to people all over. The Wii lacks in both categories by comparison.
The Wii is a one-trick pony that's on its last leg, especially with Natal and PS3 motion controllers coming in 2010. #wii
I consider myself a gaming fanboy. I have no preference for one system over another [as I have defended the 360 when all of my friends prefer the PS3, and I have defended the PS3 when everyone else has a 360]. However I noticed most gamers despise the Wii, as if they feel threatened. Personally, I think it's because of the ratio between bad games and good games on the Wii [with the rule that for every good game on the Wii, there's 10 bad games].
That being said, for any criticisms people may have for the Wii... it's not a horrible console. It does have good games. The thing is, I don't think those Wii games interest most gamers out there, or gamers just assume anything on the Wii is sub-par. It's just not true. I've enjoyed a ton of games on the Wii. A lot of them are underrated. And I know some of them don't interest 'hardcore gamers'. But that's fine. Everyone has their own tastes.
You can criticize the console for its lack of HD graphics. But don't criticize it for having no good games. If you give some of the games a shot, you might find them quite enjoyable.
That being said.... it was only a matter of time before Nintendo had to do a price cut of their console. With pretty much every other console slashing their prices, I just think it was about right. Regardless, Nintendo is still making ton of profit, and I'm sure they're developing the next console in order to try to maintain their lead. #wii
i think Nintendo just didnt' evolve as I evolved... as a kid I loved NES(i still have mine) and super NES and N64 but... i guess my expectations for systems have changed... its not just about solid gameplay (which gamecube lacked) or competitive graphics (which gamecube and wii lack) but its also the depth of games available (which gamecube and wii lack) and the lack of exclusive titles (now it seems that few titles are exclusive to platforms... but rather exclusive to wii)... until these changes are made.. NES shall be my only nintendo system in my house #wii
@krnplcd: Um.... The GameCube didn't lack graphics compared to the... PS2. Have you seen Resident Evil 4? The thing with the GameCube was the lack of killer exclusives, and a much smaller library. #wii
@W10002: And the inability to play DVDs.
And the fact the controller was terrible.
And the fact it was a purple lunchbox, pushing Nintendo's kiddy image.
And the fact that first party titles also reinforced this image.
And the fact that a lot of those first party titles were pretty lacklustre. #wii
@Thee Sea: I agree with all your points but the controller. The Gamecube controller was awesome compared to the current generation at the time.
The original Xbox controller was for giants with giant hands, and the PS2 controller was just a rehash of the previous uncomfortable controller.
The GC controller was ergonomic and had a good selection of button and sticks. My only complaint was the arrangement of X and Y. #wii
@CrashingX: By the time the gamecube came out the xbox already had the smaller controller shipping with it. Not only that, but people LOVE the dualshock controllers. That's one of the reason there was so much outcry when the design changed for the PS3. #wii
@Thee Sea: UH...What? The GC was released days after the Xbox (GC - Nov 18, Xbox - Nov 15). and technically months before the Xbox if you count its Japan release. Unless Microsoft can see into the future, but apparently only to an extent, I don't think they possibly could've shipped with a smaller controller by the time the GC was release. Basic search would've yielded those dates.
I can't stand the Playstation controllers, and that includes the PS1 and PS2. Uncomfortable to hold and uncomfortable to use. The GC controllers were a masterpiece by comparison.
And did you try some of those first-party exclusives on the Cube? Windwaker? The 2 Prime games? Melee? Animal Crossing? I guess pardon them for stepping outside the box in some cases. I enjoyed those games, but I guess if you want to go back to Final Fantasy: We've Done This Before and FPS: Just Like the Last One then you're more than welcome to.
I realize there may be a tone of fanboyism in this post, but if I enjoyed the console then I should have every right to defend it. #wii
@dp05: Zelda did a lot to prolong the kiddy image. Like it or not, the first thing people notice about games ARE the graphics and Zelda was a cartoon. The 2 prime games while good had a lot of issues stemming from the controls. The GCN controller was horribly suited for the FPS genre which was one of its many issues. As for Melee, it was a VERY rare gem.
Stop putting words in my mouth and let the numbers speak for themselves. The Gamecube was the lowest selling Nintendo console outside of the Virtual Boy for a reason. #wii
Nintendo used to be known for really fun unique games, now their all the same on the wii. Although it supports the game cube controllers (best designed controller ever) you can't play any of the new games with it. Once you realize you don't actually have to get off the couch to play any of the games, the wii looses it's appeal quickly.
I mean you feel dorky enough playing video games in your 30's, but sitting on the couch jerking your hands wildly around while not watching pron or a sporting event is just wrong somehow! #wii
@TreFacTor: It's not just Nintendo's problem. All developers are sucking it up this generation. They're out of ideas and concepts and just keep rehashing everything to stay afloat. These are indeed the dark ages for gaming and while there are good games this generation, the amount of them and the amount of fresh ones is nothing compared to days of old. #wii
Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't the PS3 seen a significant increase in sales? According to this post, the 360 is the only console to have done so.... #wii
@PlayerX: There's a recent Gamasutra article showing YTD sales through September for the last 3 years. The 360 was the only one with an increase from 2008 to 2009. But I expect PS3 will fare much better this holiday season. #wii
@Mike Zuniga: That was Unexpected: there are still a few gems on the wii. smash bros brawl, twilight princess, and fire emblem to name a few. it has beena while though since a noteworthy game came out #wii
@heisthejordan: Twilight Princess is better on it's initially intended system. SSBB is also better played on old hardware. Care to name a "gem" that utilizes their great gimmick? Fire Emblem doesn't. (Nor was it a "gem" in my book) #wii
@Mike Zuniga: That was Unexpected: Nintendo made the move to family and casual games. It was a horrible business plan, since the other consoles have casual games as well, and Nintendo was charging too much for casual games and a casual game system.
I think we can all agree that Nintendo hasn't been the same since the N64. The Gamecube was a powerful system for it's time, and had network capabilities, but it was never used to it's full potential. The Wii, on the other hand, has been used to it's potential, and has been found, by many, to be lacking.
But don't expect Nintendo to change their game any time soon. #wii
@Mike Zuniga: Nintendo still cares about the hardcore gamers IMO. It's the lack of third-party support for real games that made me sell my Wii for a 360.
@Wewtaco: You are right that their third-party developer support is terrible, but that is exactly why people don't believe Nintendo cares about hardcore gamers. . . . . Nintendo doesn't make games for hardcore gamers, third-parties do. Therefore, nintendo is neglecting that market. #wii
netflix streaming on the current gen wii is pretty impossible since it lacks a hard drive to cache to, so i'm sure we wont see this until the wii hd. #netflix
@se.blackheart: Netflix streaming doesn't cache with a HDD anyway. The first Roku (now dubbed "Roku HD" streams HD content adequately, and only has 64MB of internal memory. The Wii has 512MB of internal memory and thus would be able to handle it equally well. Since the current Wii only handles SD video, it wouldn't need to use much internal memory for standard caching procedures. Assuming they could partition a small portion of the internal memory for exclusive Netflix usage, I can't see anything "impossible" about it. Did you mean "impossible" in a different way? #netflix
@se.blackheart: I have owned a Roku for a year now, and it works great. And what part of the Wii having more room for caching did you miss? The specs on the Wii actually are better than the Roku, in every regard. People with very slow connections will have problems downloading anything... that doesn't mean that providing the service for people who do have bandwidth is impossible.
Care to explain now why you believe it's impossible? I still think you're using that word wrong. #netflix
@se.blackheart: That doesn't mean that it's impossible to implement and have many if not most people be able to use it quite well. Most IPTV set top boxes that I've seen don't have nearly that much memory. Yes, they're made to go on connections with decent bandwidth but you could probably satisfy most people that have broadband with this kind of buffer and good compression. Nintendo would just have to let folks know the minimum bandwidth requirement for the old Wii to use this feature. Who knows? That might make the HD more appealing for people with lower bandwidth. #netflix
@se.blackheart: I'm not trying to sell you anything. Just making the point that Netflix streaming on the Wii is not only very possible, but may be of cost benefit and interest to many.
As for the content provided, some find it lacking, while others have found plenty worth watching. To descend into a debate based on quality of content would be to engage in a pointless debate over whose tastes are better or more relevant. I stopped doing that when I turned 12. #netflix
Good they are holding off... can't imagine any movie looking good coming out of a Wii.
Cartoons would look good though.
With their awesome whooping 64 MB external GDDR3 SDRAM! and.. and... and their awesome 24 MB internal memory to give you the bestest 480p quality ever! Yaaay wiiiiii...
...I'm glad I sold mine.
Too bad, I was a fan of Nintendo until I had a Wii. #netflix
@wannahakkalooki: The Wii has better specs (in every regard) than the newly-dubbed Roku HD set-top box. Why would it look worse? Care to explain your cavalier dismissal? #netflix
@met2art: You sure you want to compare the Wii with an HD DVR? Like a motorola 6412 or a TiVo HD DVR supporting 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, native and multiple tuners?
And yes perhaps you are right the video specs on the Wii are enough... for 480p.
I didn't buy a HD TV to watch 480p otherwise I would've just kept my old tv.
Bring up a good contender like a PS3, Wii should just stick to "fun" for now and continue rolling around in the Sandbox.
I really hope they catch up with their next release, they usually do.
(Nintendo has been on my fav list since the late 80's I just think that could've done MUCH better with the Wii) #netflix
@wannahakkalooki: Why are you bringing DVR specs into this? The Roku HD is not a DVR, and Netflix streaming content is not recordable. Many people do own a Wii and would enjoy the thousands of hours of SD content that Netflix streaming provides.
Based on your attitude they are supposed to forego all that? Why? Because it's not good enough for you?#netflix
@met2art: Dude... my point was that the Wii needs an update!
Period!
People want HD content at 1080 not 720 not 480 simple, Wii doesn't offer that. #netflix
@wannahakkalooki: Your point is not only wrong, but your point of view is based on complete ignorance of the facts. Stop projecting what you want and stick to facts, because you sound like an idiot. #netflix
And just when Roku was starting to become relevant again, Netflix goes and takes their whole god damn raison d'etre. We hardly knew you, Roku... #netflix
@met2art: I suppose if you look at it that way, Netflix only put one company out of business that really shouldn't have been in business at all, whereas google destroyed an entire industry with a simple "oh, and we included this little thing with Android 2 that you might find clever..." #netflix
