    While I am as big a spelling/grammar nazi as anyone, the fact is that EITHER spelling variation is considered acceptable, at least according to all three of the dictionaries with which I just consulted. However, strangelove9, those same references DO agree that there is only ONE correct spelling for "asshat"...
