Why is it left to the corporations to do what parents should be? Why is it Apple's responsibility to prevent 15yr olds from downloading an application that is clearly rated for 17+? Why do 15yr old kids even HAVE an iPhone?
Is it Cannon's fault if a 13yr old girl uses their digital cameras to take nude photos of herself then post them to the web? Is it the responsibility of EA to make sure that 10yr old children don't play Mass Effect? Is IBM responsible when a kid finds porn on the internet using one of their computers? Does everyone shout at Microsoft to pull IE off the market because you can surf to porn? The answer to all of those questions is NO. So why is Apple (or Blackberry or Palm or anyone else with an app store) responsible to pull an app like this off the market?
They shouldn't be. The parents of these underage miscreants need to teach their children about what is acceptable and what is not. About personal responsibility and what it means to post something like this. The PARENTS need to monitor what their children do. The PARENTS are the one who bought the 13yr old an iPhone and let them have free run with it. The PARENTS are the ones that need to be yelled out, publicly shamed, and made fun of. It is THEIR responsibility to teach their children not to do stuff like this. Not Apple's or Microsoft or Cannon or any other corporation.
I know damn well that I will be teaching MY children these things. That I will be watching where they surf, what they do, and even disabling features of their phones, computers, or whatever it is they have. I will watch what they do on Facebook, MySpace, or whatever is hot when my 7yr old gets to that stage. And if he does something stupid, I won't blame Facebook or Apple, I will blame myself for not teaching him to think and do the smart thing.

On one hand, I agree parents need to start accepting responsibility for their kids and their actions, and stop blaming everyone else.
In this case though I think they're both idiots. The parents for allowing the kids to get to this point, and the devs for not knowing this was going to happen and taking steps to prevent it. How hard would it have been to have a waiting period for pics to be cleared?

For the underage nudity thing, if Apple wants to play police in their app store, then yeah, they should be held responsible. Of course doing that means they're going to have to ban any sort of social networking app that allows posting of pictures.

Damn you Apple!

i had pics of my girlfriends naked when i was 16. polaroids, natch. it was in 1999, so digicams were still expensive and shitty.

They don't have a way of confirming that you're of age, and it lets you upload your pics to a public forum instead of doing direct phone-to-phone transfer? Yeah, I can see why they'd be getting flak for this. It's probably less to punish them and more to just make sure they fix the problem post-haste.

...Last I heard, a girl taking naked pictures of herself and sending them out to the internet isn't exactly the innocent little angel her parents will probably claim she is. The iPhone didn't trick her into taking naked pictures, did it?
Who cares anyway...worst case scenario the girl gets called a few names in school. Europe does just fine with nude/topless beaches/pools/saunas/etc. Why is this country so certain that an exposed breast causes some irreparable harm?

Last I checked, it's still illegal for her to do so. Matter of fact, there was a case a few months ago where two kids were arrested for sending (and saving) nude photos of themselves to each other by cel phone.
And it's not so much that an exposed breast might cause irreparable harm, but that an exposed _underaged_ breast might lead to some very specific harm on her behalf. All it takes is one child predator to find out who she is, and she might not live to regret her moment of indiscretion.

I didn't say all of them. I said _one_. How many others might be inclined to follow suit doesn't matter when you've already got one standing in front of you. And they cover enough such incidents on the news that assuming it won't happen is clearly not the right course of action.
Note: This is part of the reason I tend to avoid watching the news.

Maybe they should support more education programs so people know how to spell pedophile.

America adopted the simplified spelling of words containing ae/oe with just a single e instead. So yes it's easier to spell but nonetheless it bastardises the English language.

@Super Sonic:
@350z-racer:
the proper term for those who lust after pubescent teenagers is 'ephebophile' - Paedophile is reserved for those who lust after prepubescent children.
