This is kind of a good idea since people like this do exist (and sometimes I'm one of them), but it's also kind of lazy. Once you think about which stop you want and whether you're going uptown or downtown, you already know which end of the subway you should ride.
@Killjoy: I choose specific cars and seats on my daily commute because I have about 30 seconds of leeway in going from the LIRR to the B train. Otherwise, I've got another 5-10 minutes to wait.
@OMG! Ponies!: Okay, also a good point. I'm a big fan of getting your exercise by speeding up the Sneakernet portions of your commute, but a 30 second window needs more of a solution than shoe leather alone can provide.
I'm waiting for the app that can match my level of anal retentiveness and will tell me where to stand so the doors open right in front of me... Always love when the platform is near-empty and me and some other guy are jockeying for one specific tile.
@Hiphopopotamus: I used to commute each way to Newark on NJ Transit, and I would try to figure out where the train would stop each day. It was fun watching the train slow down, and one group would be following the door, and run into a group waiting till the train stopped.
