Here are the highlights:

•No video recording at launch, though they seem to think such a thing will be added via update. (We knew this already)
•MMS support is confirmed
•They imply that Office 2007 documents work fine on Pre, though they don't specify if it's read-only
•Custom ringtones are a go, as are ringback tones
•When in USB mode, all calls will be automatically routed to voicemail.
•IM Services: Google Talk and AIM at launch.
•The color for calendar events can be chosen manually on the Pre, or sync'ed with the colors you've got set up in Exchange
•Cookies can be disabled in the browser
•No pictbridge profile yet, so no wireless photo printing.

Again, none of this information is confirmed. Although that bit about automatic redirect to voicemail when in USB mode seems absurd to me. [insidesprintnow via MobileCrunch]

<![CDATA[How to Tweet At Work Without Getting Caught]]> Chances are you're reading us (and goofing off) at work while trying to pretend you're not slacking. Spreadtweet's an easy way to check twitter while making it seem like you're a not a lousy employee.

Here's the key: it looks like Excel from Office 2003, 2007 or 2008 (Mac). All your tweets are displayed in plain text down down the page, and you tweet by typing yours in the top textbox and hitting send. There's even tabbed views along the top, making it a relatively complete Twitter package.

And don't forget to follow us if you haven't. And yes, pork rinds and STDs are what my friends tweet about. [Spreadtweet via NYT]

<![CDATA[Documents To Go for Android Released to Edit Microsoft Office Docs]]> We heard about Documents To Go for Android a few months back, a Microsoft Office document reader/editor/creator for mobile devices on its way to the Android platform. Now it's out for $20.

Documents to Go supports file formats up to Office 2007&,dash;technically those file extensions include .doc .xls and .ppt, along with Adobe's .pdf for good measure. But apparently that $20 price is only an introductory deal, with the app price bumping to $30 after some arbitrary amount of time. Get it now through Android Market. [DataViz via UberPhones]

<![CDATA[Where Did Microsoft's Mac Page Go?]]> Maybe it's being restructured, but I can't find it. Is it just me? Are they revamping the site or something? Hit the link to see for yourself. Updated 3:33PM ET [Microsoft Mac]

Microsoft just told us that the issue was just "regular maintenance." They're working on getting it back up soon. Yay.

Update: It's back up.

<![CDATA[Microsoft Wants You to Pay Monthly Subscription for Office and Services You Won't Use]]> Microsoft is testing a new bundle of fun codenamed "Albany" which rolls Office Home and Student, Windows Live OneCare, Office Live Workspace and some other Live services into a package that you'll pay a monthly fee for. It's this kind of thing, turning software into service you have to keep paying for and never actually own, that makes reports of Windows 7's modularity kinda scary. Here's what "Albany" will ask you to pony up for every month in real-world terms.

Lifted from Vwag:

•Office-productivity software that can be had for $119 at Amazon.com, but is likely already installed on a user's computer.

•A "collaboration" service most home users will have no need for

•Windows Live OneCare, a PC-security and maintenance service which Microsoft already sells as a subscription

•Three Web services Microsoft already offers for free
Wow, what a deal! Please don't let your mother fall for this. I'll keep an eye on my mom, you watch yours, and maybe we can stem the tide of perpetually paying for software here and now. [ZDNet via Valleywag]]]>

<![CDATA[Clippy R.I.P. - The World Wasn't Ready For You?]]> With recent tragedies surrounding our space an pornography programs, one major death has been passed over by the media. We are speaking of the late, not-necessarily-beloved Clippy who was brutally murdered out of Office 2007. Here is what Jensen Harris, Office Group Program Manager, had to say about the recent death.

One of the tenets that we had about the new UI in 2007 was that we only wanted to create one way to get to all features. We didn't want to have menus and toolbars and Clippy as parallel, slightly different ways of getting to the features, so Clippy as a way of helping you decode cryptic menus and toolbars didn't make sense, because we didn't have those cryptic menus and toolbars anymore...Although I think that social user interface wasn't ready for the mainstream yet
At the age of 10, Clippy was just a child at (his?) death. In private, Clippy often spoke of leaving the office behind for a simpler life. We hope that he found it...wherever he may be.

Also, I freaking hate Clippy.

<![CDATA[Vista Launch Parties Kickin' off Tonight]]> Yo party animals geeks, it's time to get that freshly dry-cleaned Zelda t-shirt on and head out for a night of Vista release partying. A bunch of retailers are hosting kickoff events all night with sports stars, local radio stations, free prizes, and fresh copies of Vista and Office 2007. Yea, we wouldn't tell our friends we were going out to wait in line for a new OS either, so tell them you're stepping out for um booze.. or something else not so nerdy. Vista is also available for download starting at midnight from the Windows Marketplace. Here's what's in store:

A few flagship CompUSA stores claim to be hosting a rager at every one of their 230 stores. They'll be closing at 9pm, reopening at 10pm, and rockin' Vista off their shelves until 2am with your local radio station DJs and a variety of unannounced prizes. They are also reporting that there will be local professional football stars at some locations, in case you're weird and want a picture of you, Vista, and Troy Aikman. They'll sleep off the booze and drink the hair of the dog again tomorrow from 7am - 9pm.

Plano, TX - Troy Aikman
Littleton, CO - Ed McCaffrey
Houston, TX - Mario Williams
San Francisco, CA - Alex Smith
San Bruno, CA - Jim Plunkett

Best Buy will be hosting Steve Ballmer, (hopefully sweating, screaming, and skipping) with FoxSports.com and Hewlett Packard at the VIP Ultimate Celebration in the Best Buy at 529 Fifth Avenue in NYC from 10pm - 1am. More sports stars and radio DJs. What's this awkward link between sports and OS loving geeks? Rumor has it there will also be fifteen other Best Buys open.

<![CDATA[Microsoft Packaging for Vista and Office 2007 Revealed]]> Microsoft, planning to lure you into using Windows Vista and Office 2007 for the rest of your life, today reveals the packaging for the upcoming products, going with a rounded design reminiscent of a 1950s toaster. Let's let the Microsoftians damn us with their faint prose:

Designed to be user-friendly, the new packaging is a small, hard, plastic container that's designed to protect the software inside for life-long use. It provides a convenient and attractive place for you to permanently store both discs and documentation. The new design will provide the strength, dimensional stability and impact resistance required when packaging software today. Our plan is to extend this packaging style to other Microsoft products after the launch of Windows Vista and 2007 Office system.
Take a look at close-ups of a couple of the new boxes, after the jump.

<![CDATA[Windows Mobile 5 Successor Will Have Built-In IM, Office 2007 Links]]> Microsoft is still busy working on push-email for Windows Mobile 5, but they've found the time (and engineers) to develop its successor, code-named "Crossbow". In order to catch up feature-wise to the Blackberry, the new version is going to include built-in IM and Office 2007 compatibility.

By removing the external dependency on the Blackberry software, an enterprise with 20,000 mobile users could save up to $1.5 million just from licensing. It normally takes from 6 to 12 months for mobile operators to test a new OS, so you won't be seeing this until sometime in '07.
