I love the three levels of explanation for everything so that everyone can feel like they are being talked to. The explanation that chemists will understand, the slightly more specific explanation for those who are science oriented but not necessarily chemists, and then the "a rock" explanation for those who are completely ignorant to science.

I think the most common term for "oleophobic" is hydrophilic. Which means something that likes water. Actually I've never heard the term oleophobic being used before.

I'm sorry to be the chemist of the lot, but "organic" chemicals do not necessarily come from "organisms". In fact, most "polymers" are synthetic compounds and the "organic" only refers to the fact that it is carbon/hydrogen based.

There is a fundamental mistake in the general science of the article 9which purports to be insight into the science of an aspect of the ipohones' screen) and people should know its not correct. The guy made quasi-interesting-low-budget-pop-science-vids for elementary school children, doesn't make everything he says correct.

@Six Demon Bag: Lite: It really hasn't changed. When I went to high school, some of our teachers (and textbooks) said the same thing. But it has never been a super-cooled liquid. Some teachers (and books) were simply perpetuating a myth.

@nutbastard: Oleophobic makes me think of Olestra chips. Use the iPhone's new coating, and it causes anal leakage, because the oil on your fingers no longer has anything to stick to, so it dribbles out your anus.

So will the screen protectors that have been out for previous iPhone generations work with this one? I like mine clean, sure... but I also want to avoid scratches.

@dustin91: Depends on what you mean by work. Will you be able to use your phone? Yes. Will the oleophobic layer do anything for you? No. This layer won't magically turn a screen protector that wasn't oleophobic into a screen protector that is oleophobic, so whatever results you were getting using a screen protector before will continue to be the same results you get now.
