It's glaringly obvious why this is so cheap.

    1. Lousy remote

    2. Boring front panel design

    3. Horrendous upconversion circuitry

But for an average person, they likely won't notice. And I say who cares what company it is...what matters is the mechanism/electronics inside (probably made by someone else, just like any other cheap player).

@Daniel Parmelee: Can I ask what is wrong with the remote? Does it not have good range? Since I rarely use the front panel on my DVD players/cable boxes, do I really need an "exciting" front panel? I'm seiously asking b/c you seem to have experience with the BD-100, and I'd like to know more about it.

Syntax (makers of Olevia) did some restructuring almost a year ago, but near as I can tell seem to be making it through. I've had an Olevia set for several years now and haven't had any trouble. It was a good deal at the time, and this BR player seems to be as well. As I look to replace my TV I'm really not looking at Olevia because the prices have come down for other, higher quality brands, but for a BR player - I might just get one.

I'm debating it, is it worth it? Still need a last minute for the dad.

@Shamoononon has hebetudinous dog ★★★★★: That depends on whether dear old Dad has a Netflix account and a TV (and eye sight) to enjoy the additional quality. If you are good on all three, then I would say the answer is 'yes', that is is worth it.

I asked this question before, but never really got an answer. Do many companies make the "drive and reader" for all the BluRay players? Or do a few make them, and companies buy them and put them in their own enclosure? If the latter is the case, and both a Sony and Olevia use the same drive, but what's around it is different, does that make a difference?

@24/6_GitEmSteveDave loves->★: I assume (perhaps incorrectly) that they all use the standard chip set for decoding and playback, and then all of the blue lasers come from, essentially, one manufacturer. I believe that is why they are all in around the same price range at around the same time.

That said, I only pretend to know stuff like this when commenting at Giz.
