This is why I refuse to buy Apple products. I refuse to support a company that feels they have to micro-manage what their customers do, and how they do it.

Windows Mobile might not be perfect (lol, might?), but at least I can take a poorly-programmed application and crash it on my phone if that's what I really want to do.

@hexydes: Most people don't care about which browser they use, as long as it is crash prone. Apple knows what 99.99% customers want.

@sos10 votes NO on prop8: 76% of the longer-standing install base wants firewire on low-end Macs, 45% wants Steve to wear something else during keynotes, 86.4% want Gizmodo to mess with Jobs at the keynote with the TV-B-Gone, 99.9% want Snow Leopard to be a free upgrade, 100% can confirm that I pulled these stats out of my ass.

@getz76: That's what I was thinking. Unlike Macs, the iPhone and iPod touch are poised to be very ubiquitous pieces of kit, thus their browsers would be. Not allowing Opera/FFM/Cydia on the phone or iPod would be pretty monopolistic, and in a way, even worse than Microsoft, since Microsoft limited how people could develop the browser, whereas this simply doesn't allow it at all.

Can apple legally do this? I mean microsoft isn't allowed to do this with windows. Rememberthe whole default application thing they had to implement in windows.

Shouldn't we be allowed to decide was apps we want to use?

The iPhone would probably have to reach a more dominant position in the marketplace before the justice department started stepping in and making them open up the store.

It's a sham Apple insists on this policy, though. I really do have to believe that competition breeds excellence.

It's not as if you have to buy Safari. It only benefits them by allowing such apps. Maybe I really want an Iphone, but hate Safari so much that I can't bring myself to do it. Something like this would make me want it again.

I can understand now allowing things that compete with itunes, but this is dumb.

@unibrow4o9: Why do you hate Safari on the iPhone? what has it done to you? I can understand that you prefer one browser over another, but hate? What would be the difference you notice when using Safari against Opera?

I still don't understand why Apple doesn't treat OS X "lite" like it does the full desktop version. Sure, lots of shit can go wrong with certain apps, but I think it's safe to say that if an app causes problems, sensible users can just delete them/restore the iPod/iPhone.

Bottom line: They'd still get fucking money for the hardware. What gives?
