Oh, and if you're looking to get more miles outta your Mac, [macsales.com] has great prices on some things like RAM (average prices on other things which aren't Mac-specific, like USB hard drives).

I highly recommend [slickdeals.net] for bargain-hunting. As a newbie, start at the front page, but as you gain experience and become more familiar, dig into the forums - they're chock-full of great "deal culture" context.

You can find a GeForce 9800GT for as little as US$100 at present, and quality 1920x1200 24" monitors have come down to ~US$200. Where'd I learn this? SlickDeals, of course. :)

I got an old one from a friend with a nice processor and and upgraded all the major components, video card, ram, added USB hubs, an extra monitor from work, wire-less keyboard and mouse and a 5.1ss, almost a brand new computer for less then $400. I am not into gaming or anything, but it fits my needs.

I just go and put neon in my case, and then get one of those giant exhaust systems built by Folgers. Makes my PC go faster.

If you're going to buy old RAM (DDR or regular SDRAM) and HD, you might as well build a whole new PC cuz they're expensive (at least compared to current DDR2)

Possibly dumb question, can XP utilize a flash drive for virtual mem, and if so, will it speed it up any?

@Rabid Penguin: I don't like Vista. I do like Mojave though, but I haven't seen a release date on it.

But yeah, I am only running XP now, so if it's a negligible performance boost, I won't bother.

For XP you'd need [www.eboostr.com] I'm not sure what kind of performance increase you'd see with it though.

I wish I had seen the BBQ mod two weeks ago.

My old Dell got gutted and left for the porter to pick up. 8 years of service from a pre-XP Dell Dimension is more than enough.

Dont try that BBQ mod with a Mac Pro. It will kill you and your neighbors.

@j4sk868: I think the problem with modding a Mac Pro into a BBQ is you'd only be able to use a limited number of sauces. Half the food you cooked would be underdone and need to be put back on the grill.

A PC would have a large number of sauces and styles, ranging from vinegar-based Eastern Carolina to molasses-based Kansas City-style, but the ribs would come out inconsistent depending on the cooking ability of the user. You'd also have to worry about food poisoning.

A Linux box would only use rubs, although the users would swear on a stack of O'Reilly books that rubs are better than sauces anyway.

@OMG! Ponies!: So in order to get the best barbecue you'd have to use a Mac that was running bootcamp with Vista that was running a virtual machine with Linux?

@Rabid Penguin: Actually, the biggest hazard is the fact that aluminum releases toxic gases when burned and will kill you. Especially don't try this on a magnesium powerbook.

    12/11/08

@Rabid Penguin: That's one method, but by that time you'd need to gut an old drive enclosure to use as a smoker attachment and the grill would be overcrowded with chicken, beef and pork ribs, and corn roasting in the husk.

At that point, the coals might not disperse the heat right. Plus, when you stop and think about it, you can use rubs on a PC grill or a Mac Pro grill. It's not like there aren't versions of GIMP and OpenOffice for OSX and Windows.

So you really wouldn't need to Linux smoker. Especially if, like most people, you're only making chicken and ribs.

@Rabid Penguin: Charcoal grills are not aluminum, they're steel. And cookware isn't typically set on fire, however it is considered suspect in causing some neurological diseases.

Go investigate the armor on the M2 Bradley tank.

    @Lite: [www.pkgrills.com] <--- Aluminum Grill.

Aluminum pans are put over high heat, and aluminum foil is stuck in your oven or on your grill.

Is there something different about the aluminum? Is the heat not hot enough?

@Rabid Penguin: No, the fact is they have no idea if it's bad for you or not (probably not good, obviously). It came about because they found elevated levels of aluminum in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. They have no idea if the aluminum is causally related or not, but they freaked out mothers everywhere who thought that their BBQ was going to kill their baby.
