Shortages are going to hurt Palm in a big way, especially if they last a long time. That would be unfortunate.
I hope that Palm does what Apple couldn't; not make the Pre an exclusive on any network. Compete with Nokia in selling phones directly to consumers, and do it at reasonable prices. I'd swap my iPhone for a Pre in a heartbeat if I could get the GSM version unlocked for $400.
Yeah. That's the kind of clarification that helps PALM see another 20% gain in share price. Considering that the announcement of the Pre sent PALM up 34%, just the pricing could potential make or break the company's future.
@OMG! Ponies!: actually, while that 34% number is widely quoted, it's wrong. The actual number is closer to a 90% increase. Palm's stock the day before the announcement - even hours before the announcement, was hovering around $3.40. The stock shot up on the announcement and closed up around $4.45, but by the next morning the stock hit almost $5.50 in after-hours trading, and went to almost $6.50 by the next day, closing ultimately that day at $6, where it has stayed. So it actually has almost doubled from it's pre-announcement price.
and why the hell would some russian blogger have inside information or how palm and sprint are planning to price this thing?! they managed to have zero leaks on the device and OS prior to yesterday's announcements. I seriously doubt anybody is getting any info on the price. seems like an attempt to grab some headline attention
that's also a superphone. it has a regular 3.5mm headset jack, unlike most cell phones. it has a leather back. it has wi-fi, i think HSDPA, and all of that. and it doesn't have a huge amount of competition, because it's marketed as a business device, rather than a competitor to the iPhone, so it's competing instead with $600-with-contract HTC WinMo phones.
the pre is going to be more consumer-friendly, so it'd better be cheaper.
Interesting that two different articles by two different writers about the Palm Pre both include the word "Amazing" in their titles. Guess this thing amazes.
It looks like they went out of their way to live up to their namesake, making a phone that really sits well in your... palm.
Now that I'm used to the iPhone's virtual keyboard, I wonder if a small physical keyboard on something like this would feel like a step forwards or backwards.
Blackberry critics: iPhone has bigger/better touch screen
So put an iPhone copycat screen and keyboard together = win? I think they need to pour a couple hundred million dollars into advertising for this to be a big hit. Even if it's the best phone in the world, people will only buy it if they think it's cool.

Granted, if they last too long, the company loses out on lots of sales.
