Wow, that makes the Pre nearly $1000 dollars cheaper than the iPhone 3GS for an individual, even more savings if you have a family plan.

$30(per month savings)*24(months)+$220(savings on phone)=$940.

In my mind there is nothing the iPhone can do that justifies an extra $1000 over the Pre.

Of course both Sprint's and AT&T's coverage suck in Chicago (especially AT&T's) so I'm on Verizon.

@elementary: I dunno about that. Everyone I know who got a Pre when they first came out really, really regrets doing it, and everyone I know who has an iPhone (including myself) is so happy with it that they come off as shameless douches whenever they tell someone about it.

Lest we forget, the 8GB iPhone 3G is $99. And still a better phone than the Pre.

See, I kinda sound like a douche right now. I must be a totally satisfied iPhone customer!

I'm betting the only reason your friends regret it is the fact they don't have nearly as many apps. As for the iPhone, if you like getting gouged on monthly rates, I suppose anyone can be happy.

@Fractal the Meek: Sprint doesn't work in my condo, but seems to do fine elsewhere. Obviously that still makes it a no-go for me. Sucks, I'd be back with Sprint in a second otherwise.

AT&T on the other hand works fine in my condo, but elsewhere in the city, not so much.

As much as I hate Verizon, I've never been without coverage in the city.

How long do I need to wait until they pay me to take one out of their inventory? A couple weeks? Well, some company had to be the basement of the smart phone business, it is just sad that Palm had to take that role.

Oh dear, things not looking so good for Palm. When you start to cut so much so quickly you are only adding to the "stench of death" that was allready apparent at the Pre's launch.

@Hearthatvoiceagain: Or you know, it's been out 6 months now. And just like all other cell phones, they price tends to decrease after A) it's been out for a while B) it's getting to christmas time.

Hell, even the iphone price dropped in half after a couple months of it being out.

@weatherman: My guess is he was talking about the Pre, not the Pixi, ignoring its existence entirely. Kinda like how you treated the "special" class in high school when they joined you for lunch. I mean, I'm sure it's a wonderful phone, and it's not the Pixi's fault it was born without WiFi and is, if we're being candid, a little slow. Still...I mean, do you have to buy it? I'm sure the Pixi will be fine if you ignore it. I mean...it probably won't even understand that you're avoiding it.

@jherman: your question is answered by the fact that the pixi is already on backorder at the $30 price point.

For Giz readers, the Pre would be the obvious choice, but I think for non-gadget geeks out there, the Pixi is a no brainer just on price alone.

And you can never underestimate how cheap most people can be.

I think this is a great deal, 30 bucks is ridiculous for a smart-phone of this caliber no matter how you cut it. I'll agree, being a pre user that In the long run It probably wont be worth it, however this is great for palm. Against expectations palm sold a lot of centros with a dated os and a resistive touchscreen. This phone has a good OS at the price of a dumbphone on a cheap carrier. At the very least this will help popularize WebOs, and frankly, palm needs all the help it can get. #palmpixiprice

@FigNinja: My business partner has one cause he didnt want to pay the ETF on 4 accounts to leave sprint. Its OK but there is a good amount of lag if you have more than 1 card open, especially the messaging app. Alot of waiting for cards to populate with data etc. While he can technically multi task, i can open an app and close it and reopen another faster on my 3gs than he can switch to different cards that are actually doing something and wait for them to finish lagging out.

Also i personally do not like hardware keyboards on devices with accelerometers, the reason being is if you are looking at something in landscape mode on the pre you have to turn it back around to input data, with the opposite on the Droid, i like having control over what and how im seeing it and not having to fight it.

Just my opinion though. #palmpixiprice

@FigNinja: I love it! Does need more software-hardware optimization but as far as usability goes, s' a breeze. the amount of applications you can run at any given time is more based on the resources of a particular app. Sadly, music+messaging+info heavy web pushes into not-so-sweet territory. Otherwise, I love the thing. Sadsadsad that it's not getting more support. #palmpixiprice

@Eulatos: Sorry, but your first comment regarding switching applications is a joke. The cards dont need to repopulate once they are open. It literally takes a second to switch applications. In fact, there is a gesture for it (swiping left to right, or right to left, on the bottom of the phone) that makes it even quicker. Unless you have a useless amount of cards open (8 or more) you shouldn't experience any lag with it. Even with youtube, sprint navigation, videos, and the messaging app, right here and right now, i can switch apps in less than a second.

Basically, Pre if you want something classy, simple and powerful (or you want a keyboard) and Eris if you're of a slightly nerdier bent (more apps, more customization, etc) #palmpixiprice

@Eulatos: That "lag" greatly depends on the specific app - some check for updates or start a network session (wifi or EVDO) on start, some are bloated with too many add-on graphics, some have to open large databases. For most things, they are quite comparable in speed of UI response.

Homebrew apps/patches provide a virtual keyboard in either mode, and will likely make it to an new WebOS release. #palmpixiprice
