The problem is that many people who are on Verizon right now who want the Pre are anxiously awaiting the device ONLY because Verizon said it was coming earlier this year. Many customers are upset because they have plans which are due and they want to move on to another plan but are waiting for the new phones. Now that Verizon said they're not getting the Pre anymore (or speculation suggests), many are ready to jump to Sprint. The problem with Sprint is that they force you to purchase a data plan for this phone, which not all consumers do not want. So users are getting very frustrating because the telco they are with now won't get it and the only company who has it, is charging too much for monthly rates for it. Palm is screwed.
@WinonaCach: Did Verizon actually announce that they are not getting the Pre? I missed that. I thought we were discussing a rumor, and my recommendation to anyone sitting on their Verizon account waiting for a hot new device is to wait until Verizon announces their plans. I suspect Verizon does not even know what they will be carrying next year, but it is a safe bet that they will get one good phone in the first quarter of 2010. But, that is just speculation on my part which, I recognize, is not worth much.
Okay, question for the geeks (you):
If Verizon decides to focus on a different device, such as a new iPhone model, does it really matter if they carry the Pre?
Another question:
If Verizon decides to not carry an iPhone model and instead focus on the Pre, does that matter more?
I guess this speculation on what Verizon will and will not carry is a bit silly when we will not know (and Verizon will not know) until they actually get there. Right?
I think I haven't had enough caffeine this morning, because I am clearly not understanding you youngens this morning. This old man needs to take his morning nap.
@Monty: it's more that people how have verizon want a decent phone. and people who have a decent phone want a decent network. right now, the two are mutually exclusive.
@srdailey: True enough. However, I guess what I was inaccurately communicating is that there is a strong possibility Verizon will get a good phone next year - maybe one better than the Pre. So, is there a reason to be concerned about a rumor that Verizon might not get the Pre? It seems like wasted energy to me. Then again, getting up to re-fill my cup of coffee can drain me for the day, so ignoring my comments is highly recommended.
Is it strange to get "cold feet" over a cell phone? Since the Pre's announcement I've been dying to get this, now I've been getting second thoughts due to the reviews talking about how flimsy it is.
I'd love to see the next gen webos palm phone but if the pre doesn't sell well then the probability of another palm webos phone would be greatly reduced. So I guess i'm thinking should i be palm's "wing man" and take one for the team in hopes that i'll be rewarded down the line...
I'm a current sprint customer that will stick with sprint due to everyone i know uses that carrier and my coverage area is better than most. i am also one of the lucky few that hasn't had any issues with them.
@Nick: all my friends in kansas city with sprint either switched or never stop complaining? and my at&t in kansas city is really good. i don't think i've ever dropped a call anywhere in the metro, and the worst i've had maybe is signal down after a storm a couple times, never more than 2 hours though. i don't mean to be a downer, but i think maybe you are just easy to please. i've never heard a kansas city sprint owner say anything positive about the service until now. i'm glad to hear someone is happy though!
@closhedbb: I would like to retract my opening line in my previous comment. I'm having a bad day, and a simple math error we all make regularly doesn't justify my insulting you.
@manuka: Then I am going to guess...hmmm..give me a second...I am going to guess that you are not interested in purchasing a Palm Pre within the next 7-9 months.
@92BuickLeSabre: Is Ponies tipping you off again, man - because I can't believe you figured that out on your own.
In our sandbox Sprint actually has some of the best coverage out there and AT&T is one of the worst. However, it is all relative since I would never discount any major carrier for coverage in America since they all have fairly similar results.
anytime verizon gets a phone they turn it to crap. sprint is making moves and i have faith they will do their due diligence with making this phone what folks want of it.
Ok then, maybe I wont switch to AT&T for the iPhone. If I can stick with Verizon's, in my experience, superior network, and I only have to wait 6 months than it looks like AT&T is the dealbreaker. Of course I will wait for the reviews to come in for my final decision.
Thank you giz, I almost had myself talked into dropping the Network for this fine piece of hardware. Now Sprint users can debug version 1.0, just in time to make any corrections on the verizon version.
