What does this say about these "engineer" parents' approach to plagiarism at their own jobs? If it's the same to them whether they or their kids did schoolwork, I don't see why they would make a distinction between doing their own professional work or ripping off someone else's...

when I asked my parents for help with homework their replies were usually like this:

Dad: "I suppose we could chip-in for a pencil"

Mom: "But don't think you're getting out of extra chores"

It's just like that time I had to make a model of a DNA double helix for science class and asked my dad to help me out.

Only he told me to shut up, and threw a beer bottle at my head from the couch and forced me to fetch him a pack of smokes cause his stories were on the t.v.

I have to say, this pissed me off too. My daughter spent two days on a project that both I an her were very proud of. The only thing I contributed is a few dollars for her to spend at a thrift shop for some material and compliments (she's 6).

I took her to school the day the project was due and almost cried on her behalf after seeing the stuff the other kids brought in... Just about everything was made by some crafty soccer mom with a sewing machine and a lot of spare change. She was so embarrassed of her creation.

It was hideous and disgusting. I withheld all donations to her classroom after that. That's not the kind of behavior I put my money into.

@Shamoononon hates twitter: I feel your pain. My daughters do their own work and are proud of it. Thankfully, their teachers recognize the parent-cheaters and are not afraid to call the parents on the carpet for it and give out the grade accordingly (tenure does have its strengths). Everyone knows who cheats at these things; the cheating parents and their spawn are all diminished because of it.

In my day, a kid brought in a clay model project that no 10 year old could make. It could have been displayed in a museum. A couple of kids at lunch asked him about it and he happily admitted that his uncle made it for him. He was so pleased that he did no work and was getting lots of praise. At the end of the day, it was mysteriously destroyed. Wasn't me, but I did feel justice was served.
