Powered by a diminutive solar panel on the roof, the car glides over air without the hindrance of friction thanks to electromagnetic propulsion, like you might might see in a high speed rail.

And herein dies the fantasy, as our infrastructure is one of pavement and concrete, not awesome magnet tracks of The Future.

But we'd still accept a gift of this non-functional car of tomorrow, if only to park it in the driveway, wax it every Sunday and obsessively open/close the front hatch until the hinge broke. [Yanko Design via ubergizmo]

<![CDATA[Peugeot Concept Cars of Tomorrow Have Propellers, Joysticks]]> If Gundam mated with Will Smith's Audi in I, Robot, the offspring would resemble these futuristic concept cars from European brand Peugeot. The cars car-like vehicles were all entries in the 2008 Peugeot Design Contest. Designers were asked by organizers to create vehicles for that ambiguous but tantalizing "city of the future." Areas of focus included environmental awareness, "social harmony," interactive mobility and efficiency. As you can see in the "Blade" vehicle above, efficiency is improved with the wind turbine that designer Ying Hui Choo added to charge an on-board electric battery.

The 888, designed by Oskar Johansen, pivots at the center and reduces its size for "easier parking, maneuverability and increased visibility."

Emre Yazici's "EGO" has two wheels and is controlled Atari-style with a joystick. The windshield doubles as the door. [Telegraph]

<![CDATA[A World in Which Cars are Invisible Looks Pretty Cool to Me]]> It seems like invisibility is on everybody's mind these days, what with the potential for it to jump out of science fiction and into reality a few steps closer thanks to the hard work of a bunch of egghead scientists. But in the world created by this cool nes Peugeot ad, all cars are invisible. Well, all but the one they're selling, of course. I don't care about some mediocre French car, but the visuals in this ad are pretty top notch. Check it out. [Space Invaders via Notcot]

<![CDATA[Cool Cars, (One That Will Be) From the Future]]> p_n-joy1wtmk.jpgOK, it's officially the future. Where are the cool cars? And I don't care what the salesman told you, that Camry's 5-star side crash rating is not "Back to the Future II" technology. And why did you go with baby blue?

Luckily, Peugeot is promoting innovation by holding an Xbox360-sponsored contest with completely open design submissions. Entrants have officially been narrowed down to the top ten, and the first winner will see their 3D fakery come to fully-built fruition.

Hit the jump for the 9 of the most awesome cars you don't see above and look for a Gizmodo hands-on...as soon as they mail us the car.
