I brought along a waterproof camera to capture what I saw in and out of the water, at the same time.

This wonderful shot is from mathetdjam's photostream and was taken with a Canon EOS 300D with what I'd assume is an external housing.

Since my first trip to Hawaii, I've had a thing for photographs taken with a point and shoot half below the waterline. I personally use the Pentax WP series, because they are pocket sized. But newer models from Canon and Olympus are coming out that can be submerged to a depth greater than 30 feet, which is more than enough for deeper snorkeling or surfing or swimming or lounging around in a lake, river or on a beach. Anything greater than that, and you'll have to go with a plastic housing. Clunky but I believe some of these float (I could be wrong) and they're very sturdy.

But never mind the gear.

I love these shots because they remind me of how much life is under the surface of the briny sea, and that the vast majority of the ocean is yet undiscovered. The half-submerged shots below are some of the best I found on Flickr, and leave a greater impression on me than strictly underwater shots. Because what's down there becomes much more strange when we are looking at it in the context of not some endless blue background that fades to black, but the very world we travel on and through daily. It's the contrast between the border of the sea and land that both grounds me and causes my mind and imagination to reach out under the waves and want to know more.

If only I had access to submarine, with a giant camera on the nose, I'd surely show you more.

<![CDATA[Sex Pixels Girls: If Semi-Tasteful Nudes Were Made of LEGO (NSFW)]]> You could recreate this effect with a $60,000 Lego self-replica...if you were only as perfectly-formed as the ladies from this photoshoot.

By photographer Jean-Yves Lemoigne (along with whomever took care of the pixelation in post production), Sex Pixels was a featured set of shots from the third issue of Amusement magazine. Maybe it's just that I've watched too much flash video after growing up on 8-bit games, but the ladies are certainly striking even if not all that detailed. OK, and maybe labeling the nudes as "semi-tasteful" was polite exaggeration on my part. [DYT via Fabrik and trendsnow]

<![CDATA[Classic Photographs Recreated With Lego Blocks Are Inspiring, Amazing]]> I dare say I've actually been inspired by Lego blocks this morning, and, quite possibly, these classic scenes from human history could make self-described fanatic Jesus Diaz weep—just a little. There's Jeff Widener's 1989 photograph of "The unknown rebel" at Tiananmen square; and Joe Rosenthal's 1945 photograph "Raising the flag on Iwo Jima"; and—especially poignant for this soccer player—even Maradona's infamous "Hand of God" goal from the 1986 World Cup. For something so toy-like to be so inspiring and thought-provoking is a testament to the creator, a Flickr user known simply as Balakov. A plastic hat tip to you, sir.

<![CDATA[Astounding Photos: Journey Through the History of the Lightbulb]]> Check out the dazzling work of photographer and artist Catherine Wagner, now featured in an exhibition at the Stephen Wirtz Gallery in San Francisco entitled A Narrative History of the Light Bulb. She used an 8x10 view camera to take the pictures for the art show, which is going on now until April 28.

Wagner was in residence at the Baltimore Museum of Industry for the past two years, and took super-sharp shots of her favorite bulbs, chosen from the museum's collection of more than 50,000 examples. If you can't get to the exhibition, feast your eyes on a dozen of her photos in the gallery below. It's positively illuminating.

<![CDATA[Slide Lights: Photos, Lighting, Decoration]]> If there is anyone left on earth who is still using physical film to take slide photographs, here's something to do with them other than boring everyone with your interminable slide shows: Slide Lights, a lighting system that lets you insert those transparencies all along its length. You can mount the fixture either horizontally or vertically on your wall. It's like an elongated light box, lighting the room and letting you display your slides at the same time.

You remember slides, don't you? If you don't, the same company that sells Slide Lights offers transparencies which you can put into this lighting instrument as well.

The Slide Lights units are available in three different sizes, a 2 foot length ($183) which holds 13 slides, a 4 foot unit ($231) holding 25 slides and a six-foot fixture ($277) which can accommodate 36 slides.

<![CDATA[Ebay Deal of the Day: Picture of Someone's Chewed Up Licorice]]> 82_2.JPG.jpgI was kind of torn about posting this, but what are you going to do. This is an image of someone's "CHEWED UP & SPIT OUT RED VINES." Now, first off, that stuff in there is green, which is pretty weird. Second off, they posted "NON NUDE" in the headline, which makes me wonder where they're selling the nude version. Apparently this was taken by a Hooter's Girl, as well, which is another piece to a messed up puzzle.
