In reply to Run, Jerry, Run! The Better Mouse Trap is Here
The radio program This American Life has a very good episode about building a better mouse trap.
TLDR: there will never be a better mousetrap because the current design is cheap, disposable, extremely effective, and currently benefiting from economy of scale. This thing fails on all those fronts.

Damn. When you said valves and pneumatics, I was hoping for something a little less conventional-mouse-trappy and a little more No-Country-For-Old-Menny.

@beercheck: That's actually what I was expecting too: a sensor and a pneumatic piston that just blows a hole in the mouse/rat.

I was always a Butch and his son fan personally.

I prefer the only mousetraps. This one is too quiet. Nothing like hearing that snap to know you got the critter.

Dya think they'd object if I brought my cat? Except rather in one of these tube systems I brought it loaded in a catapult?

If you put a little oil in a fairly large steep sided bottle and some bait (peanut butter is excellent, (mice are not big on cheese) in the bottom, then lean the bottle at a 45 degree angle someplace where the mouse can get in, he won't be able to get out again. You can then release him back into the "wild".

I was expecting it to surpass a traditional trap in maiming ability, not just detection.

If the whole point was to kill a rat or injure it, I'd prefer the sticky patches. Yes. I'd rather see it writhe and die slowly and painfully.

@Pessimippopotamus: When I used to work in a pet shop, one of the white rats we had for feeding pythons got loose and disappeared into the store. It never tore the bags, but it did sneak into cages at night to steal food. We ended up having to lay down sticky traps for it. One day we found one of those traps, gnawed down to about half its original size, with tufts of white hair along the edges. Sonofabitch chewed his way off, and about a week later, I saw him zip by. I gotta say that little dude earned some respect lol

@iheartpie: Rodents are incontinent, so as they sit in the food bins chowing down, they're also defecating and urinating on a regular basis, which is why just about anything a rat's been eating in reeks to high heaven. This not only destroys hundreds of dollars worth of feed, but it also causes a potential health risk for the animals for sale, some of which are parrots costing hundreds of dollars (and rats love parrot food). Not only that, but the rat could show itself as a patron is walking through the door, and not everyone is going to be calmed by the fact that the rat is albino. Even in a pet shop, vermin must die.

I would've much rather caught the rat and returned it to the tank, but the ordeal went on for a number of weeks before it disappeared. By then, the rat could've been anywhere, and gotten any number of parasites.

@Kaiser-Machead: That's a fair enough argument, however if you're gonna use a trap, why not a humane one? That was my point.

    @witeowl
Humanity can apply even to those intended to be eaten.

This is why intensive farming is slowly being fazed out in the civilised world.

Also, lets get phylisophical, we're all dying, so why treat anything with any respect? Cause that's what humanity is.

@iheartpie: We're supplied with traps by the company, so unless one of us wants to pay out of pocket, we didn't have much of a choice. Only humane quick-killing traps I can think of are the spring-loaded variety, and in a shop like that, that's a seriously bad idea. I guarantee 4-5 out of every 10 employees in the chain would snap their fingers in those mechanical traps on a regular basis lol. Trap cages are out of the question, because of the expense, and the fact that it doesn't kill the animal, which is a primary goal of the traps in the first place.

@Jrsy Devil's Advocate®: A quick death? That's pretty humane compared to watching it writhe to death on a sticky pad.

@NewbiusMaximus: Trapping without killing it is humane. A steel bar slamming down on it may not necessarily be immediately fatal, depending upon the position of the mouse under it.

@Jrsy Devil's Advocate®: Why does it have to be humane?

Besides, I have had a couple of mice now survive the old style mouse traps. One even was dragging it around as it was stuck to its tail.

Of course, the best mouse trap is a cat. Now if only mine would quit playing with the mice and just finish the job.
