Well, put away the Binaca, because Sony has taken back their promise for undisclosed reasons.

Now recordings will not be transferable between systems, and HD recording has been nixed for the moment, too (but presumably coming back after launch). So what's left to look forward to with PlayTV? The PS3 combined with the PSP will still allow streaming of PlayTV signals/content. Not bad, but not enough to justify replacing my current DVR, either. [Eurogamer]

<![CDATA[PlayStation 3 PlayTV Recordings Can Be Copied Anywhere]]> For the first time in a long time, we want to grab Sony and kiss them square on the lips. Because PlayTV, the PlayStation 3's DVR/PVR (that's not coming to the States yet), will record television to MPEG2 files that can be easily copied off the system to any storage medium you'd like. That's right, no DRM.

But can Sony do such things legally? According to their producer Mark Bunting, it's fair game:

We've talked to our legal department about it. All we're doing is moving it out of PlayTV and to the cross-media bar as if it was any other recording. So hopefully users won't do stuff they shouldn't do with it...If I'm prohibited from getting the recording off and storing it somewhere else because some other dude is making money out of selling it, then I'd rather they brought the law in to catch those people.
Hallelujah! Someone ring a bell so Sony gets its wings. [eurogamer via kotaku]]]>

<![CDATA[Video Demo of PlayTV, the PlayStation 3 DVR]]> Even though the PlayTV PVR for the PS3 was announced for Europe in the middle of '07, they still haven't managed to release it yet (target date was early 2008). The BBC managed to get a hands-on video look at the device over at Sony's UK offices and it actually looks pretty great.

You can rewind and pause TV, record two shows at once (but none while you're actually playing games on it), and stream live TV to your PSP, all from the little box that receives digital terrestrial signals. It's true that this can record a HD signal, but most of us in the States watch our HDTV via our cable or satellite, which this doesn't work with. We'll see what Sony plans to do to address that before they bring PlayTV here. [BBC]

<![CDATA[Video of PlayTV, PS3 to PSP DVR Walkthrough]]>
While filming this walk-through of Sony's new DVR on the PS3 (with content streamed to the PSP), I mouthed to another writer, "This is hot shit!"

And I meant it. Especially regarding the part that looks like Apple's Front Row. [Kotaku]

Of all Sony's recent PSP announcements, this is really the only one that could directly impact American consumers in the near future...and long distance relationships everywhere. [Kotaku]

<![CDATA[Sony Europe Releases PlayTV PVR for PlayStation 3]]> Just as we reported before, Sony's just announced a personal video recorder (PVR) add-on system for the PlayStation 3 in European/PAL territories. Starting early 2008, the dual HDTV DVB-T tuner setup and the PVR will be available in the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain, and you will have the ability to store shows on your PS3, watch them via Remote Play on your PSP, and auto-choose between HD and SD depending on your hookup. No US launch is planned as of yet, but we'll update if there's more info. [SCEE - Image via Joystiq]
