An annoying catch: the 10MB limit is still in place for the app store.

The change, discovered by Macrumors forums user getinline1, preempts a dissonance that I wondered about during the Keynote: How could Apple/AT&T/everyotheriPhonecarrierintheworld justify a 10MB cap on downloads when they're allowing continuous video streams in apps? They couldn't, I guess, and it's great news for podcast listeners, who will no longer be forced to endure the daily info-nugget podcasts that exlusively inhabit the sub-10MB corners of the iTunes store. [Macrumors —Thanks, Jeremy!]

<![CDATA[Zune Website Podcast Downloads: Almost]]> The Microsoft Zune website still doesn't have podcast support that's as good as iTunes, but the Zune nation does seem to be limping toward easier podcast downloads. Take a look at its "Pass It On" page, and if you follow the NPR Podcasts link and click on a podcast within, you'll see a button labeled "download to Zune".

Zune still doesn't have a huge aggregation of podcasts where you can click to subscribe to your choices, but at least it's a start. But how hard can it be to list podcasts and then let people click a simple button to subscribe to them? Is there a patent issue here?

<![CDATA[Upcoming Zune Features: Podcasts, Synchronized Lyrics]]> By using a resource hacker and looking inside the Zune software files on a PC, some curious Zune owners found a few possible upcoming upgrades to Microsoft's player. Among them, synchronized lyrics, podcast subscription, aspect ratio, plugins, syncing lyrics to the Zune, and mini-mode playback options.

Of course, not all of these may be implemented any time soon, or implemented at all. It's just an idea of what could come down the line from Microsoft.

<![CDATA[NYC MTA Launches Podcast, Huh?]]> Photo_080806_002.jpgSure, we've heard of some pretty whacky podcasts out there, but this one may take the cake. Reader Nick sent us this photo of a promotional poster for TransitTrax, the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority podcast. According to the picture the podcast provides service advisories, MetroCard promos, safety tips, etiquette tips, news and construction updates. What the hell, man? Thanks, Nick

<![CDATA[BlogTalkRadio: Live Talk Podcasting is Here]]> One of the weaknesses of podcasts has now been eliminated with BlogTalkRadio, a hosting service that lets podcasters broadcast live over the Interwebs, accepting live callers or instant messages while on the air. The talk service allows podcasters to have up to five people (including the host) on a phone line at once, which all runs through the BlogTalkRadio site. Listeners can receive the podcasts on an ordinary Windows Media Player, unlike TalkShoe, a previously-announced live podcasting model using a proprietary player.

What's the catch? Well, BlogTalkRadio inserts contextual advertising, that is, advertising similar to Google's ads which theoretically have something to do with the content. But the good news is that ad revenues are split 50-50 with the podcasters. Could this be the dawning of the live talk podcast?

<![CDATA[ChannelGuide360: Video Podcasts for the 360]]> logo.jpgI guess today is special interest website day. We received a note about this interesting little site that lists WMV feeds that you can stream using Windows MCE on a PC. While the process—and the site—is a little convoluted, it's nice to know there's someone out there looking out for us.

<![CDATA[Pod2Mob - A Little Hunk of Code that Makes Your Mobile a Podcasting Machine]]> Not massively compelling but a nice little hack. Pod2Mob has created a system for turning podcasts to files that are playable through a mobile applet on almost any phone. Considering most phones have pretty crappy audio playback and no one in the US listens to music on their phones—yet—it's a great way to become an early, early adopter.

<![CDATA[PSP Web Browser Can Download Podcasts]]> Some ninjas at Davesipaq have figured out how to get the PSP to download podcasts—or blogcasts, if you're crazy. Not much too it, but the principle is pretty exciting.

The PSP treats the podcast just like an audio file, which we'd assume it would do anyway. But the podcast even includes the podcast image and a few other goodies.

<![CDATA[It's Not a Podcast. It's a BLOGCast]]> This came out last week but warrants mention. Apparently in the halls of Redmond it is forbidden to speak the word "podcast." It is, in fact, a "blogcast" and this "pod" thing is just clouding the issue. I mean the iPod and iTunes are not the only media combo out there. They're just the best selling, best designed, and most intuitive media combo out there and Microsoft products can also be used to play back audio files and even, on occasion, allow you to purchase music from services such as "Rhapsodyster" and "MomomediaJukebox.net." So it's a blogcast. Windows will un-register itself if you attempt to use podcast again.

Shhhh, don't say the p-word! [News.com via Mozongo]

UPDATE - This is probably an urban legend, but who cares.
