no matter Google throws at you guys, all of you will still find Google the non evil corporation.
Sad but true.
One decade later and you will all be remembering this. Chrome OS, android, gmail, wave.... etc. Its all free for a reason. Its all hosted up in the cloud for a reason.
@Noobs-R-Us: Except that Google has to pay for the bandwidth for people using YouTube. The companies that are violating the TOS are essentially shafting Google. I don't really see a company trying to stop loss of money with no returns as evil.
@Rogue Justice: Here's where some of you are wrong. Google needed these companies to help make Youtube popular. Now that they've gotten the traction they need, they want to dump those who helped them instead of trying to work something out. Yes, that's very not evil of Google.
@Noobs-R-Us: I understand where you are coming from, but the analogy I'm gonna use is this: What if you own a house and your neighbor starts watering your lawn for you, without asking. You're happy at first and grateful to your neighbor. Then you realize that your neighbor is over-watering your lawn and killing it. Since, technically, your neighbor should never have started watering your lawn, you make them stop. Google basically thought that it was helping them, but have realized that it is now hurting them, so they want it to stop.
Wait, what? What about internet connected TVs, like my Panny?I mean, it should go without saying that access to YouTube was the deciding factor in my $1,700 television purchase. And now that's gone? Thank God I still have the SD slot, so I can use it to look at family pictures............
@Kaiser-Machead: That is the funniest damned thing I've seen in ages. Actually sat here laughing 'til my sides were splitting and tears rollin' down my cheeks. Holy shit... pure comic brilliance.
@met2art: Let it be a testament to all out there who dare deny Youtube of its great worth. You will never find stuff like this on Hulu, which is basically just gimped bits and pieces of regular TV.
@Kaiser-Machead: I couldn't agree more. It was via YouTube that I found the hilarious Chad Vader episodes, also. As I say, there may be a high ratio of chaff to wheat, for some, but hey, what'd it cost ya to get in?
@met2art: I often catch a few of the dregs hoping to find something good, but that's not much different from having cable TV. The amount of crap usually outweighs the quality by a large margin, regardless of the medium.
That said, Hulu and Co. will never show any of the repurposed classics, seen here.
I can understand Goog's reasoning. It is a costly operation and I think we take it for granted. Placing ads in videos has helped ease the burden. Youtube is a business and shouldn't have to tip toe around the issue of other companies making money by playing videos on their devices. It would make sense from Google's point of view to work with these manufactures for some method of placing the ads in their devices. Obviously there is the issue of not being able to click through, but I'm sure Google can come up with a solution.
I would hate not having the youtubes. Where else can I see fat kids get kicked in the nuts. Might as well let Google follow it's business model of supplying free, ad supported, internet based services. What ever keeps stupid people hurting themselves on video.
@thechansen: Google knew that it was a costly operation before they bought it. YouTube was about to shut down if it weren't for Google because of how much it cost to run the site. What did they think was going to change afterwards?
@N@tedog: I agree. YouTube on any new HDTV is like cloning a mammoth. It might be techincally feasible, but is shouldn't be done. Why not just hook your VCR up while you're at it?
So, is it safe to assume that the AppleTV (wassat??) and the iPod touch will still be able to freely access Youtube? I can't imagine they'd be shut out, but given their recent friction, I can't rule it out.
@Kaiser-Machead: i don't get why you would think they'd be any different. i doubt it will leave ipod touch cause that's an app developed under google, appletv however should be eff'd.
@Azures: Apple has a great deal more pull than a lot of those other hardware vendors out there, namely the likes of the purveyors of Popcorn Hour. Apple made a big deal about its addition to the ATV, and I doubt very much that they'd let it simply disappear. Not to say that there's no possible way that Google would take it away, but I don't believe it would be as easy to do it to Apple.
I got my dad the WD HD TV last Christmas, and he loves it. I love it because it just works right out of the box and plays every format I throw at it, yet it's simple enough for a 65 year old man who's afraid of the iPhone to use. I bought a 2 pack of seagate 2.5" external drives from Sams Club for 130 bucks back in January, and once a month I'll pop over to my folks house and swap out the drives, leaving him with fresh movies and tv episodes to watch. He loves to brag to his friends about how his kid is so sneaky, and gets him "Hollywood movies that are still in theaters."
He's happy, I'm happy, WD TV gets two thumbs up. #hdmediaplayers
@Cash907Censored: The WDTV is the first gen with out ethernet, this article is about the WDTV Live also know as WDTV 2. Its got eithernet and some other differences. #hdmediaplayers
@bigdave914:
Yeah, I'm aware of that thanks. Thanks to a recent firmware update, the only difference between the WD HD TV and the WD TV Live (version reviewed above) is the newer model has an ethernet port. #hdmediaplayers
Good article. I have been looking over this info for a while now and glad to see it collected.
i like the idea of the Patriot, BUT I just don't see them following up with sequential firmware updates like WD will do (and has done with the previous WD TV).
I LOVE the specs of the Popcorn Hour box, but at that price and size, I would go for a PS3.
For features, support, and price, I think I am going with the WD TV Live (as soon as it actually freaking shows back up in stock somewhere). #hdmediaplayers
@Unknown2U: You'll be happy, this I know from experience. The Creton 6 tuner card will cost more than any of these boxes however. These are all in one single purchase devices. It's not a apple to apple comparison. #hdmediaplayers
@Unknown2U: I understand. Currently I love my CC tuners and will probably build a new WMC box with a Centon Tuner. What I'm saying is that these boxes serve a simpler task and even the most expensive of them is $300. #hdmediaplayers

Now if Panny would just ditch Amazon Video in favor of Netflix...and fix that BS of not passing Dolby Digital from HDMI to the optical out.

Instead of shutting down the boxes completely, how about re-working the API so it can serve the in-line ads along with the content?

My PC has Windows 7, I purchase this thing next year: [www.cetoncorp.com]
I rent 1 cable card for $4 a month. That device will allow me to record up to Six Live HD Channels Simultaneously.
Then I just use my Xbox 360 to watch TV.
Beats the PS3, let's face it. Most people watch more TV than they do movies. #hdmediaplayers

The card pays for itself in one year if I get ride of my two DVRs from the cable company. #hdmediaplayers
