Panasonic LX87 Portable DVD Player Has 12-Hour Battery Life, Longest Yet

Panasonic celebrates Sony Day by showing off two portable DVD players, the LX87-S (pictured here) and the LS80-K. Both have 8.5-inch screens and the LX87 has a 12-hour battery life, supposedly the industry's longest. As portable DVD players go, they've got all of the basics down: MP3 playback, JPEG viewing, compatibility with SD and SDHC memory cards, etc. The LX87 also sets itself apart from its lesser brother by including a 1Seg TV tuner. Though we'd still like to see Xvid playback one of these days. Both models will hit stores in Japan in April. More »

    Bluedot's BDP-1200, 12-inch Portable DVD Player

When does portable cease to mean "able to be easily carried or moved"? Bluedot takes us once step closer to finding out with its BDP-1200, a portable DVD player that features a 12-inch screen and weighs 3.5 lbs. Beyond the 800 x 400 pixel resolution screen, the BDP-1200 is your typical portable DVD player. That said, it does have an SD card slot (as well as MMC and Memory Stick slots), a USB port for connecting USB drives loaded with your favorite audio/video content. It plays back a number of different formats as well, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 SP, DivX, XviD, JPEG and MP3, making it quite attractive to those people who enjoy all those great scene relases. There's also composite, S-video and component video output, in case you ever wanted to output your media to a bigger, higher resolution monitor. Battery life isn't too bad, lasting about three hours playing back a DVD with the LCD on and five hours without. Expect to see the BDP-1200 (in Japan) for the equivalent of $510. More »

    Mustek Portable DVD Players

Any guess as to who will make the first portable Blu-Ray DVD player? I'll bet you anything that it won't be Mustek. But if you are in the market for a regular old portable DVD player, this company has a decent offering. The flagship MP100 supports Divx, has a 10-inch swivel widescreen LCD, and plays DVDs, CD/R/RW, MPEG-4, MP3's, digital photos and MMC/SD memory cards. Not bad for only $300. The two other players are a little cheaper. The MP70C ($135) and MP72 ($129) both have 7-inch LCD screens and can playback DVDs, MPEG4 files, music CD/R/RW, and photos. More »
