I'm OK with over-sharing now and then, but this could be too much.

So far Lynsee has blogged every detail of her pregnancy for mommy blog, Moms Like Me, but now she's taken them up on an offer to live stream the labor and childbirth for all of the Internet to see. There are promises that it'll be "tasteful" and that only already registered users of the blog will be able to make comments on the live stream, but I'm a bit weary of the entire event.

Don't misunderstand, I'm not prudish about seeing some girl parts, nor am I squeamish about watching a live birth, but I do wonder how the Internet community will react. [Boston via Switched]

<![CDATA[Kickbee: Now the World Can Know What Your Fetus is Up To]]> Corey Menscher, in a fit of fatherly devotion, constructed a device that notifies him when his unborn baby kicks inside the womb. Even better, he's training his kid to post on Twitter right from conception.

The Kickbee is a wearable device made of elastic and a whole mess of sensors and electronics. Piezo sensors detect the baby's movement and transmit electrical charges to an Arduino Mini microcontroller, which in turn transmits the data to a Java application via Bluetooth. This Java app deciphers the meaning of the signals, and posts on Twitter when it determines the baby has kicked.

The actual Twitter posts are somewhere between adorable and hilarious, and I think the sensors might be a little too sensitive:

"Wow I'm being very active! I kicked Mommy 84 times at 03:44AM on Thu, Dec 11!"
12:46 AM Dec 11th from web.

Kudos to Corey for the project! [MAKE]

<![CDATA[Cellphone Use While Pregnant Causes Kids To Go Haywire, Study Says]]> Pregnant women should probably add cellphones to the list of things they need to avoid, along with alcohol, sushi and cat poo. A giant study that surveyed over 13,000 children found that women who used mobile phones when pregnant were more likely to give birth to kids with behavioral problems.

The study, conducted by UCLA and Aarhus University in Denmark, found that using cell phones just two or three times a day would raise the risk of their babies developing hyperactivity and emotional disorders by the time they enter Kindergarten.

The scientists responsible for the study say that the results were "unexpected," and that they haven't discovered what biological mechanisms causes the problems. But the results stayed the same even when they accounted for other possible causes—such as smoking, family psychiatric history or socio-economic status.

But before everyone freaks out and buys a MummyWrap, the scientists stress that the results "should be interpreted with caution" and affirmed by other studies. In the meantime, maybe tell Mommy-to-be to limit her cellphone use a little bit, just in case. [The Independent via Textually]

<![CDATA[Samsung Files Patent for Safe (ie Non-Baby) Sex Cell Phone]]> A cell phone that lets lay-deez know if they're running a higher-than-normal chance of getting pregnant is the latest idea from Samsung. The Korean electronics giant has filed a patent with the US Patent & Trademark Office for a "portable device for user's basal body temperature (BBT) and method for operating the device."

An ultrasonic or laser-based distance sensor, and an infrared ray temperature sensor installed around the speaker of the phone measures the distance of the phone to your ear and the temperature inside your eardrum. Then, software inside the phone processes the measurements and transforms them into BBT records, before recommending that, yes, you can have hot, crazy rumpo with no consequences, or yes, you've got a chance of making Junior if you get busy tonight.

It's not a bad idea, given that a lot of women would rather lose a leg than be separated from their mobile, but how are Samsung going to market this? Presumably not, as we have, as a safe-sex phone, as it's won't protect from STDs.

Here's a bit of the patent application, but be warned that the word menstruation is used repeatedly in it.

[0089] Referring to FIGS. 2 and 7, as shown in FIG. 7, the information control unit 218 may display the user's generated menstruation information, e.g. fertile period information, on the display unit 219 of the portable device, i.e. on a screen of the portable device in a form of a calendar. Also, the information control unit 218 may display a graph 720 in which the user's menstruation information is indicated in each color. In the graph 720, a black interval 711 indicates a menstruation period, a green interval 712 indicates an infertile period, a yellow interval 713 indicates a pregnancy possibility period, and a red interval 714 indicates a fertile period.

Also, when the menstruation starting day is not inputted by the user, the information control unit 218 may provide the user with an alarm to induce the user to check for pregnancy.

What I want to know is, if you use your girlfriend's cell to take a call, do you completely bork the calendar, or does it bust you as being in possession of a penis and shut down? [Unwiredview]

<![CDATA[The Conception Cap - Get Pregnant With or Without The Sex]]> Why go through the messy act of "intercourse" when you can get your wife/girlfriend/lover pregnant the easy way: with a conception cap. The cap works by having the man squirt his baby-making goods into the cap, then placing the cap at the woman's cervix opening. With any luck, the woman will soon be vomiting and retaining water like a pro.

Actually this is even better than sex the normal way, because it bypasses all the sperm killing juices of the woman's hoo-hoo and places the semen as close to the uterus as possible, at the opening of the cervix. It's FDA approved for home use, which is an improvement over similar older devices which had to be placed inside by a physician. Great news for couples who are trying to get pregnant. Available for $299.

<![CDATA[Woman C: The Ovulation Thermometer]]>
This one's for the ladies—the fertile ladies. Not only does it measure a woman's absolute exact body temperature, but presents it as a 12-day graph on the display. It works in 30 seconds, and remembers up to 480 days worth of results. What if it's nighttime and you are all snuggled up in bed ready to, uh, procreate? The Woman C has a backlight, and an alarm too (although I don't think the alarm is smart enough to sound-off when you are ovulating—that would be the ultimate).

It will be available in Japan starting December 16th for US $58.
