@Scott Andrews: It means it's smaller. I know, it makes no sense at all. It's just random branding for a new form factor.
My advice is, don't get any products by Sony, then you can safely ignore their unceasing attempts to create new proprietary knicknacks like the Memory Stick, the Memory Stick Pro, the Memory Stick Duo (needs an adapter to be used in Memory Stick and Memory Stick Pro devices), Memory Stick Pro Duo (faster version of the Duo), Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo (8-bit parallel interface), and Memory Stick Micro (which really has nothing to do with the rest of these, it's the Sony proprietary version of the microSD card). Wait! I forgot the Sony SxS Pro card, which is also a completely different memory card.
I like memstick because I have enough products to make it worthwhile. An old Sony Clie PDA I don't use now, a CyberShot camera, a couple PSPs, and a PS3. The price gap is negligible to comparable cards now, but like much Sony stuff, it really serves you best to go all in or all out...
That said... this name is crazy, haha... Memory Stick Pro HG Duo HX Plus XL Championship Edition EX Turbo II Elite Ultra! :p
@fuchikoma: yes...we went all in on SD cards and have been able to use them in cameras, pdas, games, etc... from most mfg except for Sony.
Sony would love to be able to drive a form factor adoption, but their products are not so critical to move the market in such a way.
If they have a brain-implant that can enhance our memory via memstick, they can probably get their numbers up. Otherwise...they will drop this silly format at some point.
