Just keep these tragic stories about mixing gadgets and booze in mind.

Last year Whitehall, NY resident Leslie J. "Bomber" Marr was arrested and charged with felony DWI and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle for driving a Cruzin' Cooler while intoxicated. Who could have seen that coming? [Link]
18-year-old James N. P. Miller, of Cincinnati passed into ironic infamy this past Halloween when he was busted for DWI while wearing a breathalyzer costume. [Link]
Big Brother is always watching, and if you happen to be ridiculously drunk while you stumble into a convenience store, chances are the video of the incident is going to spread across the internet like wildfire.
Take note: your ability to evade the police in your car diminishes greatly when you are intoxicated. Case in point, the 18-year old girl in Jackson, Michigan that was chased down and busted by a cop on a Segway. [Link]
Like I said earlier, Big Brother is always watching. And there isn't a better candidate for the role of Big Brother than Google. If you happen to be an Australian man passed out drunk on your lawn, the StreetView car will be waiting, ready to pounce. [Link]
Excessive drinking impairs judgement and can result in mood swings. Take 22-year old David Robinson for example. Last month he was charged in Perth, Scotland with breaching the peace after he threatened passersby and challenged a lamp post to a fight. [STV]
Be careful where you pass out. Crawling into an industrial garbage bin is not recommended, as Brighton UK resident Scott Williams found out one fateful July morning when the contents of the bin were crushed by a garbage truck. [Link]
Be careful of who you pass out around. Not only did 19-year old Huang Chen wake up with a hangover and a severe case of butt remote, he also learned that his friends are dicks. [Link]

<![CDATA[Cycling PSA Gets the Point Across With a Little Lego Ultraviolence]]> As a cyclist, I can appreciate the message being put forth in this Biking Rules PSA. As a Lego lover, I can't help but smile at the cuteness inherent in the violent auto accident portrayed at the end.

Talk about mixed signals. But seriously, don't run red lights. As the video says, we humans don't pop back together as easily as Lego minifigs—although that sure would be convenient.

Next up: A Lego PSA for cyclists about how riding through the streets like an entitled asshole will probably get you maimed, killed or at the very least doored by a disgruntled driver. [YouTube via Brothers Brick]

<![CDATA[Texting While Driving PSA Delivers Bloody, Bone-Crunching Message]]> Holy shit. The initial accident is bad enough, but the creators of this texting PSA, not content with the usual scare tactics, add in some flying glass and a neck crunch to hammer things home. Then the second car appears.

The video was done with local actors by the Gwent police department, to be shown in area schools as part of a 30-minute deterrent movie about "texting while driving." It's effective, violent and bloody. That's probably the point.

Anything like this being shown in the U.S.? [BBC News - Thanks, Matthew]

<![CDATA[Don't Pre-Order Windows 7 Now]]> Microsoft's half-price deal for Windows 7 ran out a few weeks ago, bumping prices back to painful levels. If you're thinking about pre-ordering anyway, wait. There's a decent chance there'll be some new deals as we get closer to launch.

They want the launch to be a success, after all, and success will be measured by sales numbers. The standard upgrade pricing—$120 for Home Premium—is too much to guarantee the kind of rocket launch Microsoft's looking for. You know, the one that shows they're back on track, especially after this past quarter.

Pressure from Snow Leopard's flat $29 upgrade price will help, and Microsoft's been savvy enough with press for Windows 7 they know that staging another set of deals will be a positive boost getting closer to launch. The early summer pre-orders were for the super-nerds—your dad probably didn't hear anything about it—so another round to get semi-regular people on board would be smart.

Plus, you know, we've heard some stuff. [Giz's Windows 7 Coverage]

<![CDATA[The iPhone 3.0 OS Is Not Ready For Everyday Use; Here's How to Downgrade]]> Lots of us have been using the iPhone 3.0 beta full-time. Now we're rolling back, because it is decidedly NOT ready. Here's how to downgrade back to 2.2.1 if you are in a similar predicament.

Now, we're not saying we're surprised, or angry, or anything. It's beta software, and beta software is by definition not ready for everyday use. But in the pursuit of the latest and greatest thing, we all have learned that a little bit of inconsistency or crashiness is often a fair price to pay for being on the cutting edge.

Not so in iPhone 3.0. It's slow as hell, locks up on everything from launching an app to entering a phone number on the numeric keypad, sucks down battery life like an alcoholic who just found his first bottle of MD 20/20 in days, and so on. Add to that a lack of support for MMS as of yet and no apps to take advantage of the background notifications, and you have a fairly useless upgrade, right now. So let's roll it back.

Note: Your iPhone 3.0 OS backups (your phone settings, unsynched photos, text messages, etc) will not be compatible with 2.2.1 once you go back down. So make sure you have a backup from the 2.2.1 days to restore from, or else you'll be starting from scratch.

iPhone EDGE
If you're running OS X 10.5.6, you'll need to do the USB DFU fix outlined in our jailbreaking guide before proceeding.

1. With your phone plugged in, put it into DFU mode by holding both the power and home buttons for 10 seconds, then releasing power and continuing to hold down home until iTunes recognizes a phone in "recovery mode."

2. Download the 2.2.1 firmware .ipsw file from Apple. Hold down option (Mac) or shift (Windows) and click on restore. Choose the stock iPhone 2.2.1 file you just downloaded.

3. Let it do its thing, and you should be in business. Restore your backup should you have one, and proceed to jailbreaking if you want to.

iPhone 3G
On the iPhone 3G, the 3.0 software flashes the baseband (the chip that controls voice and data network traffic), which confuses iTunes when you try to downgrade. So you have to jump through a few more hoops to downgrade your 3G, but it's still easy enough.

1. Follow the first two steps above for iPhone EDGE, only using the iPhone 3G 2.2.1 firmware package of course. Again, OS X 10.5.6 users will have to do the USB driver switcheroo detailed above.

2. When it's done restoring, you'll get an error message that looks like this:

As long as it's a four-digit error number like 10xx, don't worry, that's just iTunes telling you it's confused by the updated baseband on your phone. Everything will work fine, but unfortunately your phone will be stuck in restore mode until you jailbreak it, which is what we're doing next.

3. For Mac (Windows users skip to step 8): Download a utility called iRecovery. This tool forces your phone to reboot out of restore mode, which is necessary for the QuickPwn jailbreak software to recognize it.

4. Go to the terminal and change to the iRecovery directory, wherever it is on your system, and type these two commands:

chmod 755 libusb-0.1.4.dylib
chmod 755 iRecovery

5. Next, copy the "libusb-0.1.4.dylib" file to the /usr/local/lib directory on your machine (you'll have to shift-command-G to go to this folder in Finder).

6. And finally, with your iPhone plugged in, go back to Terminal and type:

./iRecovery -s

You'll get a prompt, where you should then type "fsboot" (no quotes) and hit enter. If nothing happens after 10-15 seconds, type it again and hit enter again. Your phone should boot.

7. Download QuickPwn and jailbreak your phone (see our guide if you need help). Restore your 2.2.1 backup in iTunes, and you should be in business.

8. For Windows: After you restore to 2.2.1, you can skip straight to running QuickPwn to get your phone up and running.

And that's it. Enjoy an iPhone free of horrible slow-downs until summertime. Bigup to the tutorial over at thebigboss.org, which was very helpful in this endeavor.

<![CDATA[Lightning Review: Voting Machines (Verdict Pending)]]> The Gadget: Touchscreen, punch card and lever voting machines

The Price: Free with registration

The Verdict: Unclear.

There have been lots of criticisms of the betas and early releases of the reliability of the touchscreen models, but all that matters is them working on the release day. And today is finally the release day for these super-hot gadgets after an agonizingly-long two-year marketing push, so expect lines as long as the iPhone lines in certain markets. Plan ahead!

We need more hands-on with these, but luckily, they're free for all American citizens today, so go out and use them and then let us know how it went. Take pictures or video if you're up for it. We want a really comprehensive review here, so make sure you use them. They're the most important gadgets you can play with, after all.

<![CDATA[Last Day to Return iPhone 3G and Cancel Your AT&T Contract Without Paying ETF]]> Did you get an iPhone 3G on launch day? That was a whole 30 days ago, can you believe it? Which means if you're an unhappy camper, today is the last day you can tell Apple and AT&T to shove it where you really don't get any 3G reception without getting slapped by early-termination fees. So if you wanna cancel without consequence, start hustling. On the other hand, if you want an iPhone 3G not tied to a two-year AT&T contract, you can cancel tomorrow, pay the ETF, and the phone is really, truly yours. Show of hands, who's dropkicked their iPhone and AT&T contract? Anyone planning to? [CNet]

<![CDATA[U.S. Travelers Lose 12,000 Laptops Every Week]]> All you travelers coming home tomorrow from your wild and crazy Independence Day weekend vacations, don't be one of 12,000 people who lose their laptops at airports every week. That's right, that ain't no typo—12,000 dudes and dudettes somehow manage to misplace their portable computers every seven days. That's 600,000 machines a year, many containing sensitive information that companies need to account for.

According to a study by the Ponemon Institute and Dell, only 30 percent or so lost laptops are ever recovered. Los Angeles' LAX airport reported having the most lost laptops out of any other airport, with 1,200 going missing every week. The most likely place for you to lose your computer is at security checkpoints and departure gates—so no matter how many beers you downed this weekend, try to be a little more alert while going through those areas, yeah? <![CDATA[Gizmodo PSA Contest Update: Rule Change]]>
We've started receiving some entries in our Gizmodo PSA Contest, including the very disturbing video above. For those unaware, we are giving away a Canon HV20 HD Camcorder. Before, we wanted a public service announcement video relating to gadgets, but due to the lack of entries and other factors—I will now also be allowing Photoshop jobs.

You can create either a public service announcement video, as previously mentioned or you can create a public service announcement flyer. Same theme as before—some kind of public warning about something gadget-related. Email your links to the Youtube video, or attach the PSA flyers (please make them reasonably sized) to contests@gizmodo.com.
