”Sony Sells 250,000 PSP Slims in Japan in Four Days
Apparently, the Japanese were just waiting with wallets in hand for Sony to drop the new version of their PSP; they went ahead and bought 250,000 of the things in the first four days they were on sale. That's about how many units Sony sold of the original PSP in the two months leading up to the PSP Slim launch. That's certainly good news for Sony, which at this point is getting really sick and tired of getting slapped around by Nintendo in the sales charts. The new PSP is cheaper, but still pricier than the DS Lite ($172 vs. $146). Will the slimmer form factor and faster load times be enough to give the PSP some more juice in this battle? We'll see, but it's certainly a promising start. [Reuters]
Video: PSP Slim Load Times Are Incredibly Improved
Remember the complaint about PSP load times being somewhere between atrocious and genocidal? It looks like Sony wasn't kidding when they said they improved load times in the new version, as seen in this video of Final Fantasy Crisis Core. The one on the right is the PSP Slim, the one on the left is the PSP Slow. Seriously, it's like 1 second vs. 7 seconds on this thing. No guarantee that all games are like this, but hurray! PSP Slim Hands-On Video and Impressions
The PSP Slim is a marginal upgrade at best, but an upgrade nonetheless, and enthusiast press is getting their hands on the first review units. Some guy at Kotaku who looks like a boy band pirate groped it, took photos and videos, and noted the differences, which I shall recap:
•33% lighter, and 19% slimmer than the old PSP.
•Menu differnces include a USB charge option(!)
•Settlings for TV output including 16:9 and 4:3 modes, progressive or interlaced.
PSP Slim/PSP Video Hands-On Comparison
Wondering what the new PSP Slim looks like when fondled side-by-side with its big brother? Prepare to be blown away by the lack of any real aesthetic differences! But hey, it's what inside that counts, right? And outside, on the TV, which actually looks pretty neat. [Gaygamer, via Kotaku]
Sony Shows Its Colors (For PSP Slim)
The new PSP, in technical terms, is fugly. The updated colors include the obligatory Piano Black, Ceramic White, Ice Silver, and then...Rose Pink, Lavender Purple and Felicia Blue—notice there's no Fireball Orange or Blood Red. Apparently the new PSP is a kinder, gentler machine with wussy casing that will operate in stark contrast to God of War flaming blade fatalities. Bonus back shot after the jump.

Sizemodo: PSP vs. Slimmer PSP
What does 19% slimmer really look like? We compare the old PSP to the new PSP (slimmer) and say that 19% doesn't really make all that big a difference. It's definitely not all that much shorter (0.6mm shorter) and narrower (2.6mm narrower). So how much is 4.4 mm really? It's 0.17 of an inch. Nothing you're really going to notice.
