VIA's Tiny Pico-ITX Motherboards Get Even Smaller

The Pico-ITX motherboards were already small, but they are getting another downgrade in size thanks to the EPIA PX5000EG—a 500MHz board that can be cooled without the bulky fan—which helps bring the form factor down to a minuscule 3.9" x 2.8." As you might have guessed, the drop in processor speed from 1GHz means that this board won't be tearing up any substantial software, but it should prove extremely popular with the embedded market. It May Be Too Late for Combo Blu-ray/HD DVD Drives

Plextor has just announced a couple of new Blu-ray drives that also read HD DVDs, clearly designed for the poor saps who made the wrong choice in the format war. At first it might seem like an OK choice for people with a HD DVD collection quickly growing obsolete, but for $500 for a read-only drive or $600 for a burner, maybe a better idea would be to just get a straight-up Blu-ray drive and consider your HD DVD losses an early adopter tax. Panasonic Kills Rear Projection, Promises 2-Way CableCard By Summer

Today in New York, Panasonic showed off the Viera flat-panel TVs it launched at CES, including its badass flagship PZ800 and PZ850 plasma sets and its premiere LZ800 LCD, all coming this summer at prices to be announced. During the meeting, Panasonic also confirmed officially that it was no longer in the rear-projection business, owing to a price crunch in flat panels that basically drove any discount value out of the chunkier projection sets. Bottom line: people would rather pay $3K for a smaller and thinner set than a larger but fatter one. Panasonic also addressed the issue of OpenCable (aka OCAP aka Tru2way) two-way CableCards. More »

Toshiba TDP-PX10U Surprisingly Bright for a Such a Puny Projector

Toshiba's building upon its mini-projector chops it revealed last fall, and while this little DLP shiner's slightly bigger than last year's palm-sized projector, it packs a more powerful punch. The 2.9-pound TDP-PX10U is still not all that big—a mere 8.3 inches wide and 6.5 inches deep—but it tosses its 1024x768 image on the wall with an unusually bright 2200 ANSI lumens and a 2000:1 contrast ratio. Check out the gallery to get a feel for its size, shape and port configuration. Too bad there's no HDMI out back. Oh well, what do you expect for $999? [Toshiba, via Gadgetress]

Live From CES: JVC eAvinu

Along with Sony, Pioneer and a few others, JVC is pimping a GPS-slash-car audio device. This one is not nearly as full featured as Pioneer's, but it's got some things going for it. The 3.5-inch TFT touchscreen is windshield mountable. The KV-PX9 has a 20GB internal HD. 13GB is for navigation, the other 7GB is for movies, photos and MP3 (or other formats) of music. There is an SD slot on the side for memory, and a USB 2.0 port as well. There are two different map views offered: 2D aerial view or 3D through-the-windshield view. There are stereo speakers on this thing, but you will definitely want to route it through the car's head unit. The music, it should be noted, is converted using JVC's proprietary "CC Converter that enhances the sound quality of compressed music files." Anyone got details on what this is and whether it's any good? The battery is good for three hours, and there is a car charger included. Available in March for $799.

Plextor Dual-Layer USB DVD Recorder

Plextor's PX-608U is a lightweight portable DVD recorder drive that comes with double layer DVD+/- writing, multi-format DVD-RAM capability and high-speed USB 2.0 data transfer. And if you get a writing failure because of a slow or stopped buffer (it's got 2MB), the drive will actually pause for you and start burning again as soon as the buffer is cleared. Also look for Plextor's 16x DVD+R media to go along with the just-announced drive. More »
