LED Plane Is More Like An R/C Comet

Flying an R/C plane in the darkness of night can be a difficult proposition. That is, until you add 150 LED lights to the hollows of the plane's fuselage and wings. The creator tells us the brightest model consumes 75W of lighting electricity and is "painfully bright at night." Irreversible cornea damage has never been so much fun! To see a video of the plane in-flight, hit the jump.

First Person R/C Plane, Almost as Good as Actually Flying

The Pilot View FPV 2400 is a (wireless) camera system that can strap on any R/C plane and stream images to the pilot, who wears video goggles below. Range is about 1 kilometer over the 2.4Ghz spectrum, and the video quality from such systems really isn't so bad (hit the jump for an example clip). At $550, it's a commitment, and seemingly a tad risky to strap onto an even more expensive, properly-weighted R/C plane. More »

Lynxmotion R/C Spider Uses PS2 Controller

For those who love everything R/C, this Lynxmotion hexapod kit is pretty dorktastically awesome. While technically 2 legs short of spider status, this hexapod has excellent mobility, as 18 servos drive the legs (featuring 3 degrees of freedom) a foot per second and over obstacles up to 4" high. Oh, and it's preprogrammed to work with a 2.4Ghz wireless PlayStation 2 compatible controller. More »

Hawks Agree: WowWee's Dragonfly Tastes Delicious

It appears that hawks the world over are not Giz readers, because they would have known that WowWee's Dragonfly is for high flying fun—not eating. Apparently, one such technologically impaired hawk in Long Island learned this the hard way after it snatched a boy's Dragonfly out of mid air. More »

Tunnel-Flying an RC Airplane, Chasing With a Car

Check out these guys who took a radio-controlled airplane with an 80-inch wingspan capable of a 120mph top speed and flew it through tunnels under Stockholm, Sweden, as they followed along just behind it in a car. A stunt like this is certainly not recommended for those of you who just got a radio-controlled airplane for Christmas, but if you're a good enough pilot, you just might be able to pull it off. Just make sure you attempt this feat when there's not too much traffic around. [YouTube]

Sleek R/C Ninja and Swarthy Pirate Fight it Out In Your Own Home

First we showed you the remote control pirate ship, and now we introduce to you the pirate himself, in a vicious R/C battle against his ninja nemesis. Of course, since ninjas are superior to pirates in every way, this should be no contest. Jump to the next page to watch the video of the two inflatable warriors duking it out in a sumo-like confrontation, where the pirate looks appropriately drunk, and the ninja is nimble and swift, as usual. But the ninja just isn't invisible enough for our taste. Anyway, either watch the video or you'll just have to guess who wins in this epic video battle. More »

Knight Rider KITT R/C Car

Knight Rider as a TV show may be dated, but as a lifestyle? Still going strong. So for the Michael Knights in training out there, we strongly recommend picking up the $60 KITT R/C car. While it won't leap through the air or create smoke screens at will, the tiny Trans Am does feature KITT's hypnotic red lights and his trademark voice. Speaking of which, how great would a verbal battle be between HAL and KITT? That's gotta be on YouTube somewhere. Hit the jump for what may be the coolest watermarked animated gif ever. More »

Next-Gen Tomy Heli-Q RC Helicopter Takes to the Skies Next Month

Japanese toy giant Tomy says it's about to roll out the next generation in tiny copters, and it's calling this one the Heli-Q. The company says this is the world's smallest radio controlled toy helicopter, but other than its smaller size, its specs seem similar to those of Picco-Z Styrofoam helicopters we've flown before. The Picco-Z took a 20-minute charge of its battery to give us an eight-minute flight, but Tomy conservatively says this Heli-Q will fly for five minutes on each charge.

Ford GT Nitro Gas RC Car Goes 60MPH

As far as model cars go, this Ford GT Nitro Gas RC car is gigantic. Just over 3 feet long, this 1:5 scale car is big enough to knock you down and kill you if you get in its way, so you'd better have a big parking lot where you're going to race this thing. It must be a tremendous sight to see this low-slung car zipping by at 60 mph. That's just downright frightening. You can now get one for $649.99, and hey, it's on sale—it used to cost $200 more. Real Flying Saucer Takes to the Air

Discover is reporting on researchers at GFS Projects in England, who have now created an unmanned flying saucer, or depending on your point of view, an unmanned flying lawnmower without wheels or a handle. For now, it's a way-cool radio controlled aircraft, but maybe someday a real flying saucer could result from this experiment. More »

i-Fly Vamp Ornithopter Is Both Goofy and Frightening

I'm not afraid of bats and low-flying birds, but Interactive Toy's i-Fly Vamp R/C Ornithopter really creeps me out with all its fluttering and swooping. The toy will retail for $40 to $50 when it comes to the US in November, unfortunately just a tad too late for Halloween. –Video by Richard Blakeley [Interactive Toy]

USB RC Car, Controlled From Your PC Screen, Turns Desk Paradise Into Parking Lot

Look out everybody, it's finally available today. No one will suspect a thing when your tiny USB RC car is parked inside its charging garage next to your PC. But then the minuscule Mini Cooper comes busting out the door, and you're controlling it right there on your PC screen, beeping its noisy horn, parallel parking it between that coffee cup and your TPS reports, steering it every which-way. That's right, the USB RC Car we told you about last month is now available from Brando. Hey! Be careful not to drive it off that cliff at the edge of your desk. Or perhaps be sure to. We have plenty of new pics and a video, after the jump. More »

Air Ray, the Shiny Remote-Controlled, Wing-Flappin' Critter

Here's a helium balloon with a twist: The Air Ray is modeled after a manta ray but instead of lazily plying its way through the ocean, it floats gracefully through the air. The guys at Festo, a company that specializes in factory automation but seems to have a lot of spare time for fun projects, created a beating wing drive for this lighter-than-air remote-controlled craft, using the "Fin Ray Effect" to make it fly like a sea creature. Better not try flying this outside with any winds blowing—you'll need lots of space in a swank Eurostyle atrium to pull this one off. [Festo]

Tyco Tri-clops R/C Car, Gets You In Laser Sight Then Pelts You Mercilessly With Discs

Generally we try to be pretty skeptical of R/C cars, what with so many of them being completely worthless, but the Tri-clops is anything but. We got our hands on this little beast earlier today, and it literally attacked us. But we're getting ahead of ourselves, first off it has three arms complete with omni-directional wheels that allow it to strafe back and forth, and there's even a berserker mode which sends the Tri-clops into a frantic spin that terrorized Gizmodo HQ. But that was only the beginning.

PicooZ Sky Challenger Laser Tag R/C Choppers Selling Soon

Remember those sweet laser-tag type R/C choppers we showed you a few months ago, the ones that fulfilled at least two of Adam's childhood fantasies? Today, I saw them, or well, something ridiculously identical, both in and out of the box. That's right, PicooZ is coming out with a $80 duelin' chopper set called Sky Challenger, and it'll be on Firebox.com within the next four weeks (though it's not up yet). Looks like Christmas will come early for Mr. Frucci! [Firebox.com]

R/C Sumo Wrestlers

Curse my speedy metabolism, for I will never be an effective sumo wrestler. But now at least I can live vicariously through these little R/C sumos. You get your very own ring, two wrestlers and two remotes. Now all you need is 10 AAA batteries and you're ready to wrestle. More »

Laser Helicopters Fulfill 2 of My 3 Childhood Fantasies

Laser tag is sweet. R/C helicopters are sweet. When you combine the two only good things can happen. That's why I'm pretty amped about the news that a Chinese toy maker has armed its new R/C chopper with an IR transmitter and sensor, allowing for two to have laser dogfights in midair. If one gets hit, its power gets cut, sending it crashing to the ground. Cold blooded! More »
