Meh, my Edirol (Roland R 09HR) performs better for around the same price. Of greater concern: Is there any reason in particular that IE 8 is incapable of participating in (or even viewing) comments? It's only got the majority market share by far, after all. I can view them via anything else (and thank god I've got options).
The Sony PCM-D (whatever) line of flash recorders is excellent. The PCM-D1 is the best of the lot - surprisingly good, literally, you would be surprised at how good it sounds, and the PCM-D50 carries a lot of the PCM-D1's DNA for a lot less scratch. So I wouldn't be surprised if the PCM-M10 is the new one to buy in its class.
The PCM-M10 is not that much cheaper than the PCM-D50 (vs. the PCM-D1 which is still almost 2k). It looks like the PCM-D50 is a little more hardcore than the PCM-M10, what with its protruding mics like the D1, while the PCM-M10 has more features but looks generally more consumery.
I could swear I've seen that exact device (the tape-recorder with Spocks-viewfinder attached) in a SciFi movie from the 2000s era.. Not Equilibrium, but something with the same sorta feel.
Anyone have any idea what in the vague F I'm talking about?
@OMG! Ponies!: Ahhhh, three great memories stand out.
1) A recording my parents decided to make of our conversation during a long road trip. I was a pretty funny little kid as it turns out.
2) Similar to Mooby, staying up late on a trip to Dallas to record the "cool big city" radio station. Sure the audio quality was what you get by holding a tape recorder next to a radio, but that was a great cassette!
3) Interviewing my grampa for a class project where you had to interview someone who had experienced some historical event/time period. Two hours of tape about his experiences through The Great Depression on up to when he left for WWII.
It's amazing how quickly all three of those memories popped in my head when I saw that picture.
Whether you need to identify an energy cloud or are trying to get readings from a parasitic lifeform, this is the one set of "hi-tech" instruments you can't beam down without.

@SportsCentre: The higher end PCM-D1 version even has old style VU meters. Pure awesome!

Solid, durable, straightforward, able to withstand use by a child and simple enough to be used by a child as well.
Show of hands: Who here grew up with one of these?

Some takeoff of WKRP, ".. with Brian and Scott". I have a tape of our "best one" somewhere, but I'm waaay to embarrassed to ever listen to it.
