I think I'd like it better if the wasted space to the left of the sidebar was deleted and the headlines at the top of the page were put down the right side instead with the width of the articles being the same size as they used to be with the smaller text. For some reason, reading the articles with this ginormous text size makes me feel like I'm reading a Goosebumps book back from third grade or something. It just seems less professional looking and a bit too ComicSans-y for a major blog.
If I'm getting picky, I'd say the wider horizontal widths (total width & post widths) do seem to make it harder to read. Having a neat vertical column, with a picture on top and skinnier text columns below seems more coherent to me... maybe cause it's less fatiguing to read, or cause the format is more newspapery and less like an ultra-wide comment on a BB forum, or maybe cause my brain has acclimated to the format of a picture on top of a smartly formatted column as somehow evolutionarily advantageous, flooding itself with endorphins when confronted with it.
I don't know enough expletives to adequately describe how shitty this redesign is.
It's so bad that I've already made a greasemonkey script to revert it so that it's readable, and to add additional tweaks to highlight friends, indent nested comments, etc.
The person responsible for this particular redesign should be sacked. (As should the person responsible for sacking the designer.)
The mobile site still sucks ass.
If I wanted to view the mobile site on an iPhone or iPod Touch, I would go to m.gizmodo.com. Quit redirecting me, it's insulting. How about giving mobile users the opportunity to make the redirect cookie permanent, as opposed to just a session cookie? Or, make it permanent by default, and navigating to m.gizmodo.com resets the cookie to the mobile site.
It really shouldn't be that hard to add a section on user profiles to customize the site's appearance. eg. Default to classic view, thread order, font size, excluding specific tags, or even raising other tags to the top. It would make this crappy redesign a non-issue for every single one of your readers.
And, here's how the mobile site could look on the iPhone.
I don't care about the font increase... but what bothers me is that I have to scroll to the right to read the article... it was bad enough that the "next" button at the bottom of the page made me do that... At work, (where I do most of my Giz reading, thank you very much) my display resolution is low-ish, and I don't like browsing in windows that take the whole screen...
Yeah, I'm whining. But you asked, so here it is: I don't like the text pushing out the width of the minimum browsing width.
FYI... it's NOT 800px... because of the left editorial/ad bar, the minimum browser res for IE 7 is 1024... if it WAS 800, I'd be fine. I get that the article CONTENT might span 800px, but factor in the right bar, and there's horizontal scrolling to be done with every page refresh/load.
I'd like to take this opportunity to mention that the mobile version of the Gawker sites sucks ass. It has sucked since it started redirecting my iPod Touch to "m.gizmodo.com" several months ago and I have since stopped browsing Gawker sites when using the Touch.
If I could change the user agent setting on the Touch to keep from getting redirected, I would, but it's annoying that I am not given an option to use my "real internet" device on a real website. There is an option at the top of the page to view the regular version, but it sends me back to "m." hell when I click-through on an article, or go past the first page.
I haven't checked today since the above-mentioned changes were implemented, but I will say at this point that it will have to be a significant change to win me back.
It also doesn't match anything else going on on the page.
It's just too big, as in awkward to read because my eyes don't look at anything else that size.
The way it spreads out in a way nothing else done is just....pointless.
It really is reminiscent of reading a book for children, so it just doesn't "feel" as professional.
And it just didn't need to be changed.
Honestly, worse than the hearts. And that's pretty bad. I'm pretty sure I haven't added any friends since the hearts came around.
The rest of the changes are neither here nor there as far as I'm concerned. (Oh except that I miss the page telling me Hello and instead of just saying Profile, but that's pretty minor. And no page motto anymore? Just The Gadget Blog? )
I try to avoid being unconstructively negative, but seriously, the size change is just plain ol' stupid.
@92BuickLeSabre: It was kind of nice knowing that you were already logged in by seeing that bit ya know?
But, maybe the additional scrolling is to make us feel better for having fewer comments per page instead?
I wish I we could customize how many comments we'd see per page. Then there's that issue where if you go to page 2+ and post, it kicks you back to page 1 when you're done. So you have go back to the page, reselect it, and go on.
@John_001: you must be lucky enough to have a "widescreen" monitor... i have to side scroll for everything....
RE: Gawker: the new format is frustrating... i don't mind being able to use my scroll wheel to navigate long articles... but for some reason XP doesn't like my sidescroller.. this leads to a lot of zoom in/out to read text.... and sucks..
or maybe your just telling me i need to buy a widescreen... dammit..
I've noticed and I like it. Have to use IE at work, cause of compatibility with our software (please, It wasn't me!), but I use Firefox at home. Anyway, I used to keep getting this weird thing on IE where the page would load all wonky (i guess because of some ads?). Hasn't been happening recently even though it still happened occasionally after the comment box upgrades. The issue would ruin it for me, I couldn't read the article without selecting all the text, so would just close out. I hope the bug fucking dies forever! Good job everyone, Keep it up!
@MagnoliaBoy: Wow, apparently I'm the only one that likes it. Figures. Maybe it's my Res, 1680x1050 at home, 1024x768 at work. Or I'm blind... Or I have no aesthetic taste...
@jbhitter24: Mine's pretty bad, but I don't read the articles anyway. I just stare at the pictures, read the headlines, and guess at what the author probably said. Sometimes I hit, sometimes I miss.

It's really atrocious.
It's standalone ugly from a design perspective.

Now, if someone wants to jump on cURL'ing enough to be able to post comments... I plan on it, just too lazy to do it at this point.

Just another example of how enraged I am by this change.
