After recording 8 shows at once, you'll have a lot of content to watch. But it won't be listed like TV Guide.

Well, at least not in Roaming Navigation view.

Instead, the shows are grouped by relationship—common threads like genre, title, and hours of original play. The more overlapping qualities, the closer the thumbnails are sorted to one another.

At first, the idea of sorting by title similarity sounds a bit ridiculous, but for those who watch CSI, CSI:Miami, CSI:NY, CSI:Indianapolis, and CSI:Millersburg, OH, it's probably pretty handy—especially if they watch Law & Order, too. [Tech-On]

<![CDATA[Toshiba's Cell-Powered REGZA 55X1 LCD TV Can Record and Display 8 Channels At Once]]> Toshiba's first TV with the PS3 Cell processor it helped develop has seriously kick-ass specs. For starters: The 55-incher's LED backlighting divides the 240Hz display into 512 individually controlled areas, and has a dynamic contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1.

The Cell processor also provides self-congruency for improved image quality at the edge of the picture, enhanced color and brightness balance, and a super-high luminance of 1250cd/m². A 7-speaker sound bar is attached underneath the display, and network functionality includes DLNA support, and an HD Web browser based on Opera.

The Cell chip is housed in an external box about the site of an older Blu-ray player. That's also where a 3TB hard disk is installed to allow the TV to time-shift up to 26 hours of programs from up to 8 channels simultaneously. (1TB of storage is reserved for longer-term recordings). Another neat visual trick: the 55X1 can show eight channels on screen at the same time—and step through each without the delay common with rival HDTVs.

The TV is on show at CEATEC (Japan's version of CES), and will go on sale there in December for 1 Million Yen (about $11,115). Toshiba hopes to sell about 1,000 models a month before the 55X1 arrives in the U.S sometime in 2010.

Toshiba also gave some insight into its future plans for CELL processor-based TVs. It talked about using the chip in a range of concepts, including a 3D TV, and a 4K x 2K model that upconverts 1080p to 3840 x 2160. Holy crap. More please. [Toshiba via Impress AV Watch]

<![CDATA[Toshiba's First LED LCD HDTVs: The Regza XV648, ZV650, SV670]]> I've always enjoyed Toshiba's LCDs as they sat on the show room floor, but couldn't take them seriously until they developed some cutting edge LCDs powered by LED. Now they've got three. Updated w/ live pics.

The top of the line ZC700 includes localized dimming and is the true example of what LED LCDs can do, and is the only example I am sure is not merely sidelit but backlit, because of its ability to locally dim sections according to the brightness required. LEDs in the array below an area depicting a black sky will remain dark, while the LEDs below the moon in a movie will light up. That helps it achieve a theoretical dynamic contrast ratio of 2 million to one. Unlike the XBR8 from Sony, this set doesn't have separate red/green/blue LEDs, but mere white ones, arranged in clusters of 10—though they wouldn't tell us how many total are in the set. Unlike the XBR8, this set is actually affordable at $2300 and $3000 for 46 and 55-inch models.

The lowest tier of the new line is the XV648, the first example of a TV with Dolby Volume built in, which keeps the volume consistent through commercials, etc. It'll be available in 40, 46 and 52-inch sizes. It also has a tech called CrystalCoat that reduces screen glare.

The ZV650 improves upon the XV648 while adding 240Hz screen refresh technology. (Toshiba reps admitted that none of the sets use real 240Hz—they just have a 240Hz "look" that uses a combination of 120Hz refresh with backlight scanning to achieve the effect.) It supposedly will reduce motion blur while helping the dynamic contrast ratio reach 100,000:1 by strobing the lighting, wiping the light palette between frames, which helps the brain process the images as if it was watching a CRT. Sizes include 42, 47 and 55-inch flavors.

I'm excited to try these out. I expect them to be on par with Samsung's LED models, but not quite on par with Sony's XBR8.

TOSHIBA BRINGS INDUSTRY-LEADING PICTURE QUALITY TO HOME THEATER WITH ITS FIRST SERIES OF LED TV

Toshiba introduces LED TV incorporating FocaLight technology with Local Dimming, and ClearScan 240 motion enhancement, demonstrating best-in-class picture performance

Digital Downtown, New York - June 10, 2009 - Toshiba America Consumer Products L.L.C. ("Toshiba"), a market leader in LCD TVs, today announced that it is now shipping its premium REGZA® HDTV Series, including the highly acclaimed ZV650 LCD TV, and state-of-the-art SV670 LED TV. These new series combine the most advanced picture technology with stunning designs, creating a highly immersive viewing experience that improves and extends home entertainment in new and exciting ways.

As a leader in technology, Toshiba designed its new REGZA line of premium LCD TVs to elevate the viewing experience to the next level by using its unmatched processing power to create all-new levels of picture quality. In addition, next-generation connectivity and industry-leading cosmetic design were added to create a new REGZA experience.

REGZA models set themselves apart with a litany of cutting-edge picture technology features such as the new FocaLight LED Backlight with Local Dimming for superlative picture contrast, ClearScan 240 motion enhancement with Backlight Scanning for amazing picture clarity with fast-motion video, and the enhanced REGZA Engine with PixelPure 5G 14-bit video processing, Resolution+ super resolution technology, and AutoView histogram controlled automatic picture adjustment.

In addition to picture quality enhancements, these new REGZA series also offer a comprehensive suite of next-generation connectivity features including a USB port, SD card Slot, 4 HDMI inputs with InstaPort and REGZA-LINK, IR Pass-Through Port, and high-resolution PC input.

To ensure that the sound quality is as enjoyable as the picture quality, Toshiba has also included new Dolby Volume sound leveling, and Audyssey EQ. Toshiba is the first TV company to incorporate new Dolby Volume, a technology that solves a real-world problem by utilizing human psycho-acoustic algorithms to ensure a consistent volume level, even during commercials or when changing channels.

"Toshiba LCD TV market share has seen a meteoric rise from just 4.1 percent in November 2007 to 11.4 percent in April 2009,"* said Scott Ramirez, vice president of Marketing at Toshiba. "For 2009, we developed and incorporated a wide range of advanced, robust technologies to create an all-new level of REGZA LCD TV. We didn't just make LED TV; we innovated by utilizing superior Local Dimming. We didn't just utilize higher frame rates; we innovated by adding new Backlight Scanning Technology. We didn't just wrap everything in high-gloss black; we innovated by creating the stunning new Deep Lagoon Design with Infinity Flush Front. The new REGZA is more than our dealers and consumers expected, and the response has been nothing short of amazing."

REGZA XV648 – Deep High Contrast in All Light Conditions

A new addition to the 2009 REGZA lineup, the XV648 Series offers extra features that truly make a difference. Extra room light can lower the contrast on some TVs, but Toshiba's new CrystalCoat™ technology stops ambient room light reflections from washing out the picture, creating 30 percent better contrast in bright rooms.** In addition, Dolby Volume technology ensures a consistent volume level when changing channels or during commercials. The result is improved picture and sound quality for an enhanced home theater experience.

The REGZA XV648 will be available in 40-inch, 46-inch and 52-inch screen sizes.

REGZA ZV650 – Clarity in Fast Motion

The ZV650 Series takes things to the next level with enhanced fast-motion picture quality, next-generation connectivity, and unique cosmetic design.

Toshiba's new ClearScan 240 technology combines 120 frames per second with advanced Backlight Scanning Technology to create a 240Hz effect. Far superior to 60 Hz or standard 120 Hz systems, ClearScan 240 provides amazing picture clarity with fast-motion video that is perfect for sports enthusiasts and action movie buffs. This new system also helps the ZV650 series attain its high 100,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, combining amazing picture clarity and incredible picture depth.

In addition, Toshiba wants to make connecting source devices and watching content simple and flexible. Therefore, the ZV650 incorporates an expanded array of connectivity features including a USB port for playback of digital video, audio and picture files, an SD card slot for playback of digital picture files by simply taking the SD card from the camera and inserting it into the TV, four HDMI Inputs with InstaPort for faster switching and REGZA-LINK for two-way device control, an IR Pass-Through Port to control source devices that may be hidden in a cabinet or closet, and a high-resolution PC input that allows you to use the TV as a big-screen PC monitor for multimedia or gaming.

REGZA ZV650 is available in 42-inch, 47-inch and new 55-inch screen sizes (measured diagonally at 42 inches, 47 inches and 54.6 inches respectively).

REGZA SV670 – The Toshiba LED Difference

The SV670 Cinema Series LED TV Series is the next generation of REGZA, and the next generation of LED TV. While some LED TVs utilize standard edge LED, the SV670 incorporates superior FocaLight Full Matrix LED with Local Dimming. The full matrix creates better brightness uniformity. More importantly, the local dimming allows deep blacks without sacrificing peak white brightness for an all-new level of picture quality with a previously unattainable 2M:1 dynamic contrast.

A new level of picture quality deserves a new level of design, so the SV670 series is the first to incorporate the Deep Lagoon Design with the Infinity Flush Front. Inspired by nature, Deep Lagoon evokes the image of sand disappearing below the surface of calm shores. The unique Infinity Flush Front then adds an edge-to-edge anti-reflective front panel, reminiscent of an infinity pool. Together, these new design elements create a stunning appearance that stands out on a sales floor, and will accentuate any home décor.

The SV670 is available in 46-inch and 55-inch screen sizes (measured diagonally at 46 inches and 54.6 inches respectively).

<![CDATA[Toshiba's New Regzas Add 240Hz, LED Backlight On the Top-End SV670 Series]]> The baddest of Toshiba's new Regza LCDs will bring all of thie year's standard top-end specs—240Hz, LED-backlight with local dimming, with a sprinkling of other upgrades throughout the rest of the new line.

Toshiba is also pushing hard on the sub-features sprinkled throughout the other two new Regza XV645 and ZV650 series (some would say gimmicks), like Dolby Volume control to automatically adjusts the sound curve to block out blaring infomercials, and auto color temperature adjustment setting that tweaks color levels accoring to the surrounding environment. USB ports for playing MPEG1/2 and DivX video as well as SD slots are also now standard—all firsts for Toshiba, but not the rest of the industry. So not a lot of excitement here in Toshiba town. They'll be hitting first quater of 2009 for an as-yet undisclosed (you guessed it!) price.

Something tells me most folks might want to hold out for all of the network-connected goodness (including Windows Media Center Extender) Tosh has planned for later this year, though.

THE NEW REGZA® REVS ITS ENGINES, AS TOSHIBA LAUNCHES 2009 LCD TV LINE-UP

Cutting-edge LCD Cosmetic Designs, Advanced Picture Quality Technologies and
Next Generation Connectivity Signal a Quantum Leap in the New REGZA LCD TV

CES, LAS VEGAS – JANUARY 7, 2009 – Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C.
(“Toshiba”), a market leader in LCD TVs, announced today that the company is taking a
quantum leap with its highly-acclaimed REGZA line. Across the entire 2009 new REGZA line-
up Toshiba is offering consumers state-of-the-art cosmetics, premium picture quality and next
generation connectivity to further its leadership in the LCD market.

This year Toshiba is taking LCD to a whole new level. Typically manufacturers add just a few
new technologies with each new generation of products, but in 2009 Toshiba breaks new barriers
by adding more innovations than ever before. Some of the new features added to the new
REGZA line-up include:
• Stunning Deep Lagoon™ Infinity Flush Front Cosmetic Design
• Resolution+ super resolution technology
• ClearScan 240™ advanced frame rate technology
• CrystalCoat™ high contrast screen coating
• FocaLight™ LED Backlight with local dimming
• InstaPort™ for faster HDMI switching
• USB Port
• SD Card Slot
• Dolby® Volume
• Audyssey EQ

“REGZA is already premium LCD TV, and consumer reaction has been beyond our
expectations,” said Scott Ramirez, VP Marketing for Toshiba America Consumer Products.
“However, in 2009 we are truly taking REGZA to the next level by making a quantum leap in
picture quality, new next gen connectivity and now industry leading cosmetic design. Whether
you have seen a REGZA or not, you need to see the ‘new REGZA.’”

CUTTING-EDGE COSMETICS
For 2009, Toshiba has merged its history of technology leadership with a new focus on cosmetic
design to create a TV that is as innovative on the outside as it is on the inside. To accomplish
this, Toshiba has created the new Deep Lagoon Design, which will serve as the design identity
for all of the new REGZA models, although each series will utilize a different application of the
process. Deep Lagoon is inspired by the beauty and elegance of nature and provides a three
dimensional feeling to a clean flat design. New invisible speakers further enhance the sleekness
of the design helping to make the REGZA Deep Lagoon Design a must-have for retail floors and
living rooms across the country.

For the ultimate in design, Toshiba’s SV670 Series also features the new Infinity Flush
Front™. Much like an infinity pool, where the water appears to go on forever, the beautiful
Infinity Flush Front features a single sheet of glass with anti-reflective coating covering the
entire front of the TV. Combined with Deep Lagoon, this creates a unique, clean and stunning
appearance.

NEXT GENERATION CONNECTIVITY
Toshiba is adding a full range of new connectivity features to its new REGZA line up. In
addition to enhancing REGZA-LINK™ (HDMI-CEC), now with increased codes for easy
connection to A/V components, the new line features InstaPort for faster HDMI switching
between those components. Typically, when a consumer changes HDMI inputs, there can be a
five or six second delay. With InstaPort, as soon as a user selects an HDMI source, it will
connect in a fraction of the time.

More and more people are now downloading their content from the Internet. Therefore, the new
REGZA provides consumers with ways to play content without an external content player. For
example, the ZV650 and above series come with a USB Port allowing consumers to view their
JPEG pictures, listen to MP3 audio, watch MPEG-1 & 2 video and even watch DivX Video. All
of this can be done with a USB hard drive, or just a USB flash drive. There is also an SD Card
Slot that allows easy viewing of JPEG digital pictures by simply taking the memory card from
the camera and placing it in the TV.

HIGHLY ADVANCED PICTURE QUALITY
Toshiba’s new REGZA line-up includes an extensive list of technologies that combine to enrich
a consumer’s home entertainment experience. Toshiba is continuing to prove its dedication to
provide the best possible picture quality by leading innovation.

The REGZA Engine
The success of REGZA starts with the high picture quality generated from its powerful engine.
The processing power of Toshiba’s fifth generation engine, PixelPure® 5G, is the heart of every
REGZA. With a 14-bit internal digital video processor, gradation is increased, creating
smoother, clearer images. Ongoing enhancements like the new 2D Chroma enhancement, 2D
Luma enhancement, dynamic sharpness and adaptive noise reduction mean that PixelPure
continues to lead in processing technology.

PixelPure 5G is the heart of the REGZA engine, and Resolution+ super resolution technology is
the soul, bringing images to life with complex image enhancement. Formerly referred to as SRT,
the next generation Resolution+ is a highly-regarded technology that overcomes an industry-
wide issue of lower picture quality when watching less than Full HD sources. Using a
proprietary processing system, Resolution+ improves 480i, 480p, and even 720p image detail for
enhanced video quality when watching DVDs, TV channels, camcorder videos or even video
games that output less than Full HD. Not just simple scaling, Resolution+ uses complex image
correction to enhance the detail of each image, making everything feel like HD.

The ClearScan 240 Advantage
4

Toshiba is taking fast motion picture quality one step further with ClearScan 240. ClearScan
240 combines an advanced 120Hz scan rate with Toshiba’s new Backlight Scanning technology
to create a 240Hz effect. This innovative solution improves picture clarity making action-packed
movies and sports more crisp and clear than ever before. Compared to standard 60Hz, or even
standard 120Hz systems, this new technology provides significantly clearer full motion video for
a better home theater experience.

FocaLight LED Backlight with Local Dimming
Toshiba’s SV Series REGZA models also feature FocaLight LED Backlight with Local
Dimming. Unlike simple edge LED, FocaLight offers a full LED matrix for better brightness
uniformity. Even more important is that the Local Dimming system allows the LEDs to be
controlled by zone, creating a significantly higher dynamic contrast ratio, where blacks are
blacker without reducing the peak white brightness. The result is a new level of picture quality
and depth that was not possible with standard backlight systems.

AutoView for the Best Settings Automatically
Toshiba’s enhanced AutoView™ feature helps ensure the best possible image quality at all times
of the day. By combining an ambient room light sensor and incoming video content monitoring,
AutoView automatically sets most of the TV picture parameters for you. Consumers don’t have
to worry about a picture that isn’t set bright enough for the afternoon sunlight or eye strain from
an overly bright TV in a darkened room. In addition to setting brightness, contrast, gamma,
sharpness and color saturation, the newly enhanced AutoView can also adjust color temperature
to adjust for changes in the color of home lighting or the surrounding walls. Not only does
AutoView make life simpler and the picture better, but it can potentially lower power
consumption, providing energy savings for the home.

All Gaming TVs
Every model in the new REGZA line is also a gaming TV with Gaming Mode for more direct
video signal-to-the-screen allowing for faster game controller response. They also feature
Native Mode™ to eliminate over scanning, allowing players to see more of the image, and
therefore see their opponents faster.

See and Hear the Difference
In 2009, Toshiba has also focused on improving real world audio quality in the new REGZA
line. One of the biggest issues with TV audio today is inconsistent volume levels when changing
channels, or with commercials. Dolby Volume addresses this common problem by applying a
sophisticated psycho-acoustic model of human hearing. This system delivers a level listening
experience by automatically bringing down the volume of louder stations or commercials or
raising the volume of lower channels or commercials to maintain the preferred listening
level. Unlike other systems, Dolby Volume does this while retaining the perceived audio
dynamics for consistent sound quality. The new REGZA with Dolby Volume makes the
annoyance of inconsistent TV volume levels a thing of the past.

In addition to providing premium picture quality, cutting-edge cosmetic designs, leading
technologies and next-gen connectivity, Toshiba’s full REGZA line-up will meet ENERGY
STAR® 3.0 certifications.

An Internet TV
Toshiba plans to introduce an additional series later in 2009 that will incorporate the new TV
Widgets, enabled by the Widget Channel framework, which allows consumers direct and easy
access to sources of personalized Internet content via their remote control. A rich array of
content is available, such as local weather, top news stories, favorite sports scores, stock quotes,
pictures, videos and more, and they are all just a click away. In addition, DLNA and Microsoft’s
Extender for Windows Media Center capabilities will also be added to allow remote control of a
compatible PC. With DLNA and Microsoft’s Extender for Windows Media Center, the user can
access all of the multi-media content stored on their PC’s hard disc drive.

<![CDATA[Toshiba Continues Their Upconverting Crusade With New Regza XV545, RV535 LCDs]]> At Toshiba's CEDIA press conference today, they're continuing to pull out all the stops with their "no need for Blu-ray, we upconvert everything" strategy, rolling out a boatload of new LCDs with their new SRT upconverting processor, which auto-detects SD sources and upconverts to 1080p inside the set. The top-of-the-line Regza Cinema Series XV545 LCDs (above) will bring the upconverting goodness at 42", 46" and 52", priced $1800-$2800 and hitting in September. Another new series, the second-string RV535 Regzas bring all the same for less, but without 120Hz. But is this the Cell upconverting we saw at IFA?

Well, yes and no. The SRT semiconductors' upconverting algorithms are based on the Cell, but are not actual Cell trips. We also learned from Toshiba's Scott Ramirez that the actual Cell upconverting demoed at IFA will not make it into production. Full pricing and details, including more low-end sets, are below.

TOSHIBA ANNOUNCES FALL LCD TV LINEUP FEATURING FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND UPCONVERTING TECHNOLOGY FOR TVs

Super Resolution Technology (SRT) Delivers New Level of Picture Quality Making SD Content Feel Like Full HD

CEDIA, DENVER, CO – SEPTEMBER 3, 2008 – Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C. (“Toshiba”) today unveiled SRT™, Super Resolution Technology, a new technology that changes the way standard definition content is viewed. SRT upconverts standard definition content to feel like HD. Toshiba also launched 11 new LCD TVs in four new series to its broad range of Toshiba, REGZA® and Cinema Series® brands.

Toshiba is solidifying its position as an innovative leader in the LCD TV market. SRT brings clean, sharp edges and bright, vibrant colors to standard definition content making DVD collections and non-HD TV channels look better than ever before. Also new is AutoView™, a feature that automatically adjusts picture settings based on the ambient room lighting and the type of video content being displayed, which can help consumers save energy while improving the viewing experience.

“The TV industry is now hyper-dynamic, with faster change in both technology and price points,” said Scott Ramirez, VP, Marketing. “Toshiba is now setting the new pace of change by announcing a second new TV line-up for fall 2008. We are introducing new leading technologies, like SRT, and also strengthening our core models for the key selling season. Toshiba's growth in LCD TV is already outpacing the industry, and this new line-up will help
- more -
solidify Toshiba's position as a true leader.”

Toshiba Makes Standard Definition Feel Like HD
Making its debut in Toshiba’s REGZA LCD TVs is Toshiba’s SRT, a new technology that overcomes an industry-wide issue, in which consumers are often watching standard video signals on their HDTVs. Using a unique proprietary processing system, SRT improves image sharpness, brightness and color, enhancing standard movies, TV shows, camcorder movies and most video games to near HD quality. This new technology is available in Toshiba’s REGZA RV535 and XV545 series.

Toshiba Takes the Guesswork out of Home Theater Viewing
Through the use of a built-in light sensor and intelligent algorithms, AutoView ensures increased image quality at all times, no matter the surroundings. Consumers don’t have to worry about the glare from afternoon sunlight or eye strain when watching TV in a darkened room. Not only does AutoView make life simpler and the picture better, but it can potentially lower power consumption, providing energy savings for the home. Like SRT, AutoView is available in the RV535 and XV545 REGZA series.

THE FALL 2008 TOSHIBA LCD TV SERIES:
Cinema Series Returns!

XV545 Series – REGZA Cinema Series with SRT, AutoView, ClearFrame and Double Skin Cabinetry

Toshiba is relaunching its exclusive and highly-regarded Cinema Series LCD TVs with the REGZA XV545 series. The top-of-the-line Cinema Series XV545 line offers advanced technology and picture quality and is available in 42.0-inch, 46.0-inch and 52.0-inch sizes (diagonal). This lineup includes Toshiba’s new SRT upconversion technology, the AutoView feature for enhanced image quality at all times, no matter the surroundings, as well as Toshiba’s new Double Skin Cabinetry. With double skin, the cabinet’s outer skin is translucent, allowing
- more -
you to see through to a second interior skin with texture behind it – creating a feeling of dimension and a rich, luxurious look.

For fast action movies and sports, the XV545 line features Toshiba’s ClearFrame™ technology, which virtually eliminates motion blur. The 120Hz system doubles the frame rate of an LCD TV from 60 frames per second to 120 frames per second, creating tire-spinning action sequences and game-winning sports moments that are more crisp and clear. All REGZA models with ClearFrame 120 Hz technology include Film Stabilization mode for a picture with smoother motion, and for those customers preferring a more film-like experience, Toshiba has also implemented a 5:5 Pull-Down process. This series also features 14-Bit PixelPure® 4G Internal Digital Video Processing with 10-Bit LCD panels for 16,384 levels of gradation and Toshiba’s ColorBurst™ wide color gamut for rich lifelike color. In addition, the XV545 series includes four HDMI inputs with REGZA LINK (HDMI™-CEC) and Toshiba’s SoundStrip® speaker technology, which allows for home theater sound in a small strip beneath the screen.

To keep the avid gamer one step ahead, the line also offers Gaming Mode, which enhances the gaming experience by reducing game controller delay. When activated, Gaming Mode allows the video signal to bypass select picture circuitry to shorten the overall signal to screen response time. What this means is that the gamer has improved reaction time and a better overall experience.

Like all of Toshiba’s new LCD TV lines, the XV545 features a CineSpeed™ panel for faster response times, DynaLight™ control for deeper black levels and is ENERGY STAR® compliant.

RV535 Series – REGZA 1080p Full HD with SRT, AutoView and Double Skin Cabinetry
The REGZA RV535 series, available in 42.0-inch, 46.0-inch and 52.0-inch (diagonal) screen sizes, features Toshiba’s PixelPure 4G 14-bit internal digital video processor, with 4,096 levels of gradation, as well as four HDMI™ inputs with REGZA LINK (HDMI-CEC) and Toshiba’s SoundStrip speaker technology. Like the XV545 line, the RV535 lineup includes Toshiba’s new

- more -
SRT upconversion technology and AutoView, as well as Toshiba’s new Double Skin Cabinetry.

RV525 Series – 1080p Full HD
Available in 40.0-inch and 46.0-inch (diagonal) screen sizes, Toshiba’s RV525 series provides 1080p Full HD resolution, offering consumers impressive high-definition quality at attractive price points in beautiful high-gloss cabinetry. The RV525 series features DynaLight Dynamic Backlight control for deep blacks, Native Mode™ to restore picture size, Gaming Mode for fast controller to screen response time and a high-res PC input.

AV502 Series – 720p HD
Replacing Toshiba’s AV500 series in the 26.0-inch, 31.5-inch and 37.0-inch (diagonal) sizes, Toshiba’s new entry-level 720p LCD TV series offers high-gloss black cabinetry and a thinner bezel than its predecessor, plus two HDMI inputs and a PC input, creating a very feature rich entry-level lineup. Toshiba is also adding a 21.6-inch (diagonal) screen size into the existing AV500 series. Wrapped in a high-gloss cabinet and standing less than 18-inches high to fit beneath standard kitchen cabinets, this set joins Toshiba’s 19.0-inch (diagonal) AV500 models.

In addition to the four new series Toshiba is introducing, Toshiba will continue to offer select, popular models from its current line of LCD TVs. For more information or to find out which TV is right for you, please visit www.REGZA.com.

<![CDATA[Dolby Volume: Solving the Problem of Annoyingly Loud TV Content]]> Toshiba TVs (in Japan) will be the first to feature good old Dubbly's newest technology, Dolby Volume, a smart system aimed at leveling off eardrum-shattering sources and content—hopefully eradicating the twin evils of loud-ass TV commercials and poorly-mastered MP3s. Here's how it works:

The system "continually monitors (or 'listens' to) the audio at all times and performs content-dependent processing...[on] all types of audio." The processing isn't just straight-up compression, it's more of a smart EQ that takes dialogue and music into concern, and adjusts many frequency bands. This has the benefit of keeping funky artifacts out of the process, but it does of course take more horsepower to do, hence the slow roll-out. The first TVs to have it will be Toshiba's REGZA ZH500 and ZV500 series LCD HDTVs, which will be out in Japan next month. No word yet on the US arrival.

In case you're wondering, Dolby Volume does have an advanced "night" mode that lets you hear everything in big epic films without waking the significant other kind enough to put up with your midnight epic marathons. That's all we know for now—when it hits the US (hopefully this year) we'll test it with American broadcast TV, a boatload of DVDs and Blu-rays, and an iPod, to see for ourselves how it fixes those nagging problems. <![CDATA[Toshiba Press Conference Liveblog]]> We're outside Toshiba's press conference, waiting to get in as they screen registered press from the unwashed and unregistered. (We showered.) Will Toshiba get up on stage and cry about the sad state of HD DVD? UPDATE: Yep, they cry salty, salty tears onstage! And show some new TVs—ultra-thin bezel and a 32-inch 1080p set. The fireworks start at 10am PST NOW!.

Looks like we are gonna see some new TVs and a few HD DVD players, and some laptops with HD DVD drives, so we'll see what's under the curtain in a few minutes.

President guy onstage: "We are surprised by Warner Bros. announcement" that they're dropping HD DVD and are "particularly disappointed" since HD DVD has gained "momentum" in the market. "We maintain the belief that HD DVD" is best for consumers. Sounds just like the press release!

VP of Digital A/V Marketing: "As you can imagine this is a tough day for me... I expected to come here today to share the successes of HD DVD..." "It's difficult for me to read all the pundits declare that HD DVD is dead, but we've been declared dead before." "HD DVD is the only format approved by the DVD Forum" so every one meets a standard. Translation: Blu-ray profile spec is a clusterf*ck. She looks like she's trying to not break down onstage or something. Stay strong!

We're on TVs now. Not a good way to get people hyped: A quote that they aim to do a "common thing uncommonly well." Dynamic backlight control on all TVs this year for dyniamic contrast ratio. Regza is on 4th gen of Pixel Pure with a 10-bit processor. Gaming mode which drops video quality ("circumvents slect picture quality enhancement circuits") for faster response time on every Regza.

All Regzas get thinline Bezel—1.5-inch bezel at most. Regza RV530 1080p 4 HDMI 1.3 inputs, PC Input. 32-inch 1080p sets! Also 37, 42, 46, 52. March/April. XV540 gets 120Hz Anti-blur, film stabilization and new 5:5 pull-down. 10-bit LCD panel for 16,384 levels of gradation, wide color gamut. 52-inch XF550 LCD TV that crams in the same spot as a 46-inch with .9-inch super narrow bezel in black or chrome. Hot shiz.

Another shot of the ultra-thin bezel:
Holy crap it's already over— they didn't show off the other gear. We'll get up close with it, so check back soon. Check out how thin this sucker is—and no, I don't have fat fingers.

<![CDATA[Toshiba's New Regza LCD TV's Bezel Touted as World's Thinnest]]> Toshiba's been shipping its Cinema Series Regza LCD 1080p displays for a while now, but we just wanted to show you the newest member of that club, with the thinnest bezel we've seen yet. Check out this 46-incher, with a .9-inch border around the outside that Toshiba is calling SNB, or Super Narrow Bezel.

Looks pretty cool, and gives you mostly screen, thus taking up less overall space. Hey, now you can fit a 40-inch TV into a hole that once was only big enough for a 37-incher. The 40-inch 40RF350 will be $1899.99, and the 46-inch 46RF350U will cost you $2499.99, both shipping later this month.

<![CDATA[Toshiba and Microsoft Remind Us What HD DVD Can Do (and What Blu-Ray Can't)]]> Dismissing that whole Blockbuster Blu-ray decision as nothing more than a PR victory, and in no way an exclusive deal by the video-rental company, execs from Toshiba and Microsoft came to NYC to show off the latest in HD DVD amenities. The latest firmware, the one that finally allows for Web-enabled network capabilities, is here, and to mark the occasion, Toshiba has officially lowered the prices of two of its players: the HD-A2 with 1080i output will drop to $299, and the HD-A20 with 1080p output will be $399. (There had previously been an instant rebate keeping the prices low.)

Kevin Collins of Microsoft is the chief evangelist of HD DVD, and he talks about three things that, in combination, he says, make HD DVD better than Blu-ray.
• Internet connection for online updates, and now, finally, Web-enabled content
• Dual decoding for real picture-in-picture playback
• "Persistent storage" memory on the deck for customization and downloading

The sad thing for you is that Collins demonstrated these traits using the HD DVD of 300, coming out in July. However, I wasn't allowed to take photos of that, because Warner would be angry, but just take my word for it, it looked very cool. In one scene, when the Spartans are pushing the Persians off the cliff, you can pull up a green-screen "behind the scenes" version and compare it in realtime. The bronze helmets look plastic; the boiling sea below is nothing but green cushions! Collins says that the Warner Blu-ray version of 300 would have the behind-the-scenes footage, but no physical way to watch both the scene and the footage simultaneously.

The disc will also have a Risk-style XML game that lets you lead soldiers against enemy armies. It looked pretty involved, so it might actually be entertaining.

To demo Web content, Collins pulled up the anime flick Freedom, from Bandai. He pulled down French subtitles where none existed before. He downloaded trailers (compressed for the Web.) Check out the gallery for all that, plus some translucent PIP effects—hell, just because that movie just looks so amazingly good.

The third HD DVD title Collins showed off was Blood Diamond. In the menu, you could pull up pages, via the Web, discussing various parts of Africa and providing up-to-date information on diamond-trafficking, civil wars and other issues that the movie touches on.

Toshiba's Jody Sally said the company had set September 4 as the day it will ship firmware allowing for 24P compatibility; that is, playback of movies at 24-frames-per-second where available, and pending 24P compatibility in your TV.

Speaking of TVs, Toshiba had its latest Regza LCD models on hand, most originally introduced at CES. There were two never before seen 52 inchers (from $3,500 to $4,000 depending on feature set) and a 57 incher (price not yet determined, shipping next month). The company was proud to announce that it is now Number 3 in market share in the 32-inch to 42-inch LCD category. You are forgiven if you didn't know there was such a category, but nevertheless, it marks a 90% sales spike for Toshiba, and its execs are beaming.

HD DVD DELIVERS ADVANCED CONTENT AND INTERACTIVITY BY OFFERING EXCLUSIVE WEB-ENABLED CAPABILITIES

Momentum for HD DVD continues to grow as player sales reach new heights and Toshiba captures 70 percent share of high definition set-top player market

WAYNE, NJ - JUNE 28, 2007 - Today at its summer press event, Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C. ("Toshiba") announced that HD DVD is bringing a whole new world of high definition entertainment to the hands of consumers. Delivering on the promise to provide advanced content and interactivity, new HD DVD titles with web-enabled network capabilities now allow consumers to easily access additional content and bonus features, as available, to enjoy their favorite HD DVD movies like never before. Current users of Toshiba HD DVD players can enjoy the web-enabled network capabilities by updating to the latest HD DVD player firmware, now available from Toshiba.

Since the launch of HD DVD, all of Toshiba's players have offered advanced interactive functionality including picture-in-picture video and audio commentary, which have already been available on many HD DVD movies. Now Toshiba takes interactivity to the next level. The company's latest firmware update supports improved network connectivity for downloading web-enabled network content and is another example of the company's commitment toward achieving the ultimate home entertainment experience. No other high definition home entertainment format currently matches the features offered by Toshiba and the HD DVD format. "Through web-enabled network connectivity, HD DVD is unlocking the door to an entirely new world of entertainment and once again achieving another milestone in next generation DVD," said Jodi Sally, Vice President of Marketing, Toshiba's Digital A/V Group. "With HD DVD, studios have the ability to develop new and unique content for movie fans, enabling consumers to have an entirely new way to access entertainment and customize their home movie experience that is currently not available with any other format."

Toshiba HD DVD Players' Web-Enabled Network Capabilities
Using the Ethernet ports found on all Toshiba HD DVD players, and the currently available firmware update, once connected to the network, users can download bonus features, as available, from a movie studio's server. This data is then saved in the player's persistent storage and can be accessed by the user. In addition to downloading new bonus features, some HD DVD discs may even include locked prerecorded content which can be unlocked with a downloadable key from the studio's online server.

In addition to downloading content, HD DVD users also have the ability to upload content and interact with content providers. For example, with the award winning title, "Blood Diamond" from Warner Home Video, users can participate in interactive polls. After providing feedback, results are delivered back to users via the HD DVD player.

Web-enabled network content became available on June 26 with the launch of Bandai Visual's anime title "Freedom" volume 1. This title is the first HD DVD anime title available in the United States, the first web-enabled network content disc and the first "twin format" disc (featuring both HD DVD and DVD on one side of the disc).

"While others may talk about interactivity, HD DVD has proven time and time again that it offers true interactive features and capabilities for consumers which can make the enjoyment of movies a new experience every time they're viewed," commented Sally.

Toshiba Announces 24p Output
Coming in early September, Toshiba will add an enhanced performance function to its HD-XA2 and HD-A20 HD DVD players by offering the capability for users to update the firmware of their players allowing playback of film content in 1080p/24 frames per second, or 24p. Movie films are traditionally captured at 24 frames per second and Toshiba's HD DVD players will be able to maintain this frame rate allowing consumers to enjoy movies in their native form.

Mandatory to the HD DVD format, every Toshiba player is equipped with an Ethernet port. In addition to the capability to access web enabled content, this also allows HD DVD owners to conveniently update the firmware of their players with new features and performance improvements.

Movie Aficionados Adopt HD DVD as the Next High Definition Format of Choice - The Numbers Speak for Themselves
Responding to recent promotions as well as the industry growth of HDTV, the market adoption of HD DVD increased significantly in the past 2 months garnering Toshiba with approximately 70 percent share of all high definition set-top players, both HD DVD and Blu-ray, in both April and May according to NPD. "These numbers prove once again that HD DVD is the high definition format of choice," commented Sally.

Effective July 1st the pricing levels available during the May and June promotions will become standard MSRPs, making the HD-A2 available for an every day price of $299.99 and the HD-A20 for $399.99. The top of the line HD-XA2 continues at $799.99 (MSRP).

Important Notes:
HD DVD with high-definition content required for HD viewing. DVD with standard definition content will upconvert to near HD quality. Viewing high-definition content and up-converting DVD content may require an HDCP capable DVI or HDMI input on your display device. Firmware update may be required for some interactive features depending on content, which may also require an always-on broadband internet connection. Some features may require additional bandwidth. To take advantage of the web-enabled network content, downloading and installing the latest firmware update (ver.2.2 for HD DVD player models HD-XA1, HD-A1, and HD-D1; and ver.2.0 for HD DVD player models HD-XA2, HD-A2, HD-A2W, HD-D2, HD-A2C, and HD-A20) is required. Web-enabled features will require an always on broadband connection along with specific movie titles that include this form of content. MP3/WMA audio files not supported. Some current DVDs and CDs may not be compatible. Some Combo Discs and Twin Format Discs may not be compatible. HDMI audio support for PCM only. For 24p output, content that was created in 1080p/24 frames/sec is required. Viewing 24p output requires an HD display capable of accepting a 1080p/24Hz signal. Because HD DVD is a new format that makes use of new technologies, certain disc, digital connection and other compatibility and/or performance issues are possible. This may, in rare cases, include disc freezing while accessing certain disc features or functions, or certain parts of the disc not playing back or operating as fully intended. If you experience such issues, please refer to the FAQ sections of www.toshibahddvd.com or www.tacp.toshiba.com for information on possible work-around solutions or the availability of firmware updates that may resolve your problem, or contact Toshiba Customer Solutions. Some features subject to delayed availability. While Toshiba has made every effort at the time of publication to ensure the accuracy of the information provided herein, product specifications, configurations, system/component/options availability are all subject to change without notice. FOLLOWING STRONG SPRING SALES, TOSHIBA ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF ITS LARGEST EVER REGZA® HD LCD TV MODELS

Toshiba increases market share by 90 percent in 32-42 inch LCD screen sizes and looks to continue this strong growth with new larger model introductions

WAYNE, NJ - JUNE 28, 2007 - Today at its summer press event in New York City, Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C. ("Toshiba") announced the availability of its 46", 47" and 52" REGZA LCD TVs as well as the upcoming availability of its largest ever LCD TV, a 57" Cinema Series® model. The availability of these larger TVs comes at an outstanding time for the company, as according to The NPD Group's retail tracking service TV data, which includes combos, Toshiba has nearly doubled its market share in the 32" to 42" LCD category in April and May 2007.

"The feedback on our new REGZA LCD line-up has been exceptional, and our market performance has been astounding," said Scott Ramirez, Vice President of Marketing. "We listened to the voice of our customers, made quality products that are market right, and virtually doubled our 32" to 42" LCD market share. We now start shipping our larger 46" to 57" models, including our Cinema Series models with the advanced ClearFrame 120 Hz Anti-Blur System, and are confident that we will continue the same level of success. Consumers are responding to the quality and design of REGZA, but more importantly, they are proving that Toshiba is a market leader in flat panel TV."

NPD's data for April and May shows that Toshiba's LCD market share in the key 32" to 42" screen size range has grown by 90 percent to 10.8 percent market share, making Toshiba #3 for 32" to 42" LCDs, including combos. In fact, Toshiba's 40" to 42" LCD market share has grown to 12.7 percent, and the company's 37" LCD market share has grown to 13.2 percent.

With the new model additions, Toshiba REGZA models will now be available in a wide range of screen sizes including 26", 32", 37", 42", 46/7", 52" and 57" (diagonally measured). REGZA televisions also come in a variety of series including: the HL67 HD series, LV67 LCDVD® series, HL167 1080p Full HD series and LX177 Cinema Series. As a result of this fully comprehensive line, there is a REGZA television to fit the need of virtually every consumer, every room and every application, helping to ensure the continued market share growth of the REGZA line.

The success of the 2007 REGZA line can be attributed to dramatic improvements in picture quality, connectivity and cosmetic design. All REGZA models incorporate key Toshiba technology including PixelPure3G™ 14 bit internal digital video processing for accurate 12 bit output and DynaLight™ dynamic backlight, and feature beautiful high-gloss black cabinetry (differentiated by series) with Toshiba's SoundStrip™ speaker system. The 1080p Full HD REGZA series adds additional features such as ColorBurst™ wide color gamut CCFL, and CE-Link HDMI CEC control. At the top of the line are the Cinema Series REGZA models, which incorporate cutting-edge technology such as the ClearFrame™ 120 Hz anti-blur system and Deep Color.

A standard LCD TV typically has a frame rate of 60 frames per second, or 60Hz. To avoid possible motion blur with fast motion video, ClearFrame doubles that frame rate to 120 frames per second, or 120 Hz. While there are many possible methods for creating the additional 60 frames, ClearFrame utilizes superior Motion Vector Frame Interpolation (MVFI) technology. MVFI analyzes Frame A and Frame B and creates a new Frame A+B. By evaluating the speed and direction of multiple picture elements within the frames, this advanced system virtually eliminates motion blur without decreasing image brightness or adding flicker.

PixelPure3G, Toshiba's 3rd Generation digital video processor, runs at a fast 333 MHz, with high 14 bit internal digital video processing for accurate 12 bit output. This system is capable of producing an amazing 4,096 levels of gradation (16 times greater than a standard 8 bit processor) for a smooth natural picture without image banding. PixelPure continuously monitors the incoming video signal, adjusting multiple picture quality parameters including real speed progressive scanning, dynamic gamma, dynamic MPEG noise reduction and now, dynamic back-light control. Superior processing creates a superior picture, and PixelPure 3G creates incredibly deep, vibrant, sharp and natural images.

DynaLight utilizes advanced PixelPure histogram image processing to monitor the brightness level of each video frame and automatically adjusts the backlight intensity based on the image content. Precise signal analysis allows for 256 levels of backlight control, creating seamless transitions and a Dynamic Contrast that is up to 5X that of the original panel contrast. The result is a considerably deeper black level for increased detail and depth.

ColorBurst significantly increases the LCD color space to reproduce 90+ percent of the NTSC Color Gamut. By utilizing proprietary image processing and color control algorithms, ColorBurst expands the number of available colors and improves the color accuracy. This significantly improves both color purity and color saturation.

CE-Link (HDMI CEC) allows two-way control between the TV and applicable source devices through an HDMI cable. The TV remote can be used to control the source device, or the source device's remote can be used to control the TV, allowing for simplified system operation, even when the source devices are not in sight. Unlike some manufacturers, Toshiba incorporates CE-Link into all three HDMI digital inputs, allowing customers to create an "in-room network" with CEC enabled devices such as a PC, DVD Player and A/V Receiver.

The momentum Toshiba has experienced around REGZA directly relates to the industry-leading technology, beautiful design and outstanding viewing experience the line provides. With the introduction of larger REGZA models packed with even more technology features, Toshiba expects to continue its strong growth and solidify its position as a leader in flat panel TV.
