<![CDATA[Slow Computers Are the Only Reason We Still Get Breaks]]> In my pre-blogging profession, I used to love a good render. I'd add an extra light in After Effects or filter in Final Cut, hit Apple+R, and sip coffee while processors did my bidding.

I'd consider how exhausting work would be should computers ever keep up with the computational demands of my workflow.

Well now that I just type all day with some light Photoshop work, my computer can and does keep up with my workflow. In fact, most of the time, it's sitting here waiting on me. And my damn internet connection never goes down, ever—even if it did, I could just use a 3G card or run over to a Starbucks.

I mean, is there no God? [Eviljaymz via Hacked Gadgets]

Oh, and a big fat [sic] on the "its" before the grammar police goes nuts in the comments.

<![CDATA[iHologram 3D iPhone App Was Just For Show, Not Peek into Alternate World]]> The amazingly convincing 3D anamorphosis app iHologram we showed on Friday turns out to be just a technology demonstrator rendering rather than a real app. Its developer, David O'Reilly, apparently wasn't trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes with the cool clip of the strolling cat, but just demonstrate how the 3D effect could be made to work. He's up for collaboration "with a developer or studio who wants to make it happen," for real, though. It might not be too long before someone takes this great idea and programs it, I suspect. <![CDATA[LivePlace Is a Virtual World Rendered Server-Side, Streamed To Any Device]]> TechCrunch found a virtual world service (think Second Life) called LivePlace, which aims to render very realistic environments in real time by rendering it first, then pushing image data to devices. The service is supposedly working off of a service from OTOY which specializes in server-side graphics. In the case of LivePlace, you'll be using that pre-rendered "massive" cityscape to walk your avatar around in.

What's great about this tech is that because they render all this stuff serverside, this beautiful imagery can be streamed to even the crappiest of devices. Case in point, the leaked video above was shown on a Treo 700 at 240kbps while being rendered somewhere else. Hotness doesn't begin to describe something of this quality that can then be customized to your liking. [TechCrunch - Thanks Ariel!]
