Renewable energy jobs grew by 14% to 6.5 million employees worldwide in 2013, says the International Renewable Energy Agency. In decreasing order, the largest employers were China, Brazil and the United States. The solar panel industry, spurred by falling prices, employed 2.27 million workers, mostly in China.
Wave power has the potential to be a massive source of renewable energy, yet it lags behind solar and wind power. An analysis in Yale 360 Environment describes the multiple challenges — including the difficulty of designing a device to capture the energy of waves — that stymie efforts to generate electricity from the…
While winds may die and clouds may obscure the sun, nothing can stop the rhythmic lapping of ocean waves. Now, an Australian company hopes to harness that power and covert it to usable electricity with the most powerful wave-energy generator ever created. And this is just their small-scale prototype.
Today's solar panels convert about 20% of the Sun's energy to electricity—which is good, but solar power would be much cheaper to use if the solar cells converted more of our star's energy. Sharp has just made a huge step in this direction, with a new cell that converts a record 44.4% of sunlight into electricity.
