    I have a (infamous) 34" HDTV - the Sony 34XBR960 - which is a CRT with 1080i resolution.

    For TV and movie watching, I sit about 8' away (on the couch).

    For video games, I stand about 4' away. I tend to game standing up. It's a nasty habit I picked up when I was young.

    the source is a significant part of he equation. as well as the content. i have seen live action DVD upscaled from the PS3 to 1080P look pretty darn good, but any CG film.. like walle or cars or shrek.. just doesnt compare. CG at 1080P is amazing

    In reply to Do You Think You Can Tell The Difference Between Standard Def, 720p and 1080p?
    Wow, it's funny to see a lot of Giz regulars not know the difference between standard definition and high definition. 720p is not standard definition, it is in fact a form of high definition. Let me explain it to you the same way I explained it to the older members of my family.

    Standard definition = Hershey's chocolate bar

    720p = Whitman's Sampler chocolate

    1080p = Godiva truffles

    You also have to factor in the quality of the inputs. My sons have the Phillips Ambilight LCD monitors in their rooms. They are both 720p. Connected to a PS3, playing Meet The Robinsons, you can definitely tell the difference between the 67 inch Samsung LED RPTV which is 1080p. It's a matter of how tight you want your picture. Having a high refresh rate and how it portrays darks is just important as resolution too.

    In reply to Do You Think You Can Tell The Difference Between Standard Def, 720p and 1080p?
    I can definitely tell the difference between SD (480) vs HD (720 or 1080). But as far as 720 vs 1080, barely. I know some people who would say they can tell the difference, and when I ask them, they would squint and stare at the screen and sometimes even come up closer and say "Yeah, I can tell the difference." Difference is only spotted when you're actively looking for it (even though motion resolution bunks their claims).

    In reply to Do You Think You Can Tell The Difference Between Standard Def, 720p and 1080p?
    As a filmmaker I find it pretty easy to tell, I shoot 720p and 1080p, and I usually prefer to work with 720p because it is easier to deal with, and you have the option of getting a few shots in 1080p if you're doing composites which lets you do things like change image sizes if you can't get the right framing, but 1080p looks amazing, and I use it for short films that won't have complicated editing.
