Surprise, Another Electronics Dealer Bribes Reviewers

Do you remember the story about Cameta Camera from yesterday? The company was bribing Amazon reviewers to take down negative reviews. Now more fraudulent reseller practices are coming out of the woodwork, as TheCellShop.net was found to be offering this little incentive to their buyers to bump their scores on resellerratings.com:

Dear Valued Customer,
If you have purchased from us before and feel we did a good job, please use the link below and rate us 10/10 and we will give you $5.00 in credit to use for anything on our website.

CompUSA: It Lives!

After it died, CompUSA was bought by Tigerdirect, and here are some of the first pictures of the freshly awakened PC retailer. Even better, the zombified store is reported by reader Martin B. to be better than its pre-undead version:
It's a much better store than it used to be, full of components, motherboards, and lots of actually _helpful_ people who know computers.

Shady NY Camera Store Offers to Pay User to Take Down Amazon Rating

Those small camera stores in NY are notoriously shady, shipping broken parts, ripping people off and being all-in-all unresponsive to complaints. What's interesting about this case of a customer being unsatisfied with their service is the fact that the company emailed the customer and offered a $75 credit in order for him to take down the negative review he posted on Amazon. "If you do decide to remove the feedback left in exchange for the refund please follow the instructions below." Stay away from Cameta Camera or any company that offers to pay to get rid of negative feedback. [Dethroner]

Apple Store Retail Employees Getting New Shirts, Slogans, Impatient Attitude

IFO AppleStore has info on the new clothing design for Apple Retail employees, who will swap out their current job titles for slightly different ones that represent Apple's iPod and iPhone business more. The "Mac Genius" will become just "Genius," for example, and there will be six different slogans for each guy. We know it's old hat to mock Apple users and Apple Retail for being slightly smarmy and, well, kind of douchey, but these shirt slogans after the jump kind of reinforce the reason why. More »

Blockbuster's Prototype Stores Look Like Best Buy

If you ever drunkenly stumble into one of these prototype Blockbuster stores in Dallas, you'll wonder why Best Buy has stocked up on so many movies and ditched the inkjet printers. These proto stores, or storetotypes, lay out little kiosks in the middle and test interesting concepts that have a tenuous relationship to renting movies such as: More »

The Idiotic Shipping Hall of Shame and a Call to Online Retailers

Yesterday, I asked you guys to send in pictures of examples of wasteful shipping habits from online retailers that you've bought things from. You came through in spades. When you see just one example of Dell sending a flash drive in a box big enough for a laptop you think it's an amusing fluke or a mistake; but when you see this many, you know it's a pattern. Take a look at the Hall of Shame below, and then let's figure out how to change this lousy practice.

Microsoft Planning to Open Most Exciting Retail Stores Ever

It looks like Microsoft is planning to take a page from Apple's playbook, with rumors of plans to open a number of retail stores dedicated exclusively to Microsoft products. It's not clear what that will entail exactly, but I'm guessing there will be a big focus on Vista. More »

AT&T Stores the First to Get Microsoft's Surface Table

It looks like AT&T will be the first retailer to plunk down the coin for Microsoft's fancy-pants Surface table, installing them in its stores on April 17th. More »

Wow: Best Buy and Circuit City Unofficially OK With Haggling

Best Buy has always earned my disdain with their retail price mentality. But now, the NYT is reporting that the mega chain and Circuit City have both told sales associates that a little haggling to get the sale done is fine. People in the company are saying this is not new. But I'm sure many don't know about it, so it is to consumers. Translation: Before you buy, bitch about the prices, Chinatown style. More »

Couple Buys $300 Hard Drive From Best Buy, Box Filled With Nothing But Beans

After purchasing a $300 hard drive from Best Buy, a customer was understandably shocked when she and her husband opened the box at home to reveal nothing but three bags of dried beans. Naturally, they immediately called Best Buy only to find that they were absolving themselves of all responsibility. After calls to both the manufacturer and Best Buy's corporate office resulted in similar denials, they decided to contact a CNN consumer watchdog group that managed to score them a $300 gift card to cover the drive. What Went Wrong With Sharper Image

Now that Sharper Image declared bankruptcy and plans to close down 90 out of its 180 stores, us (vibrating) armchair quarterbacks are all trying to figure out why the store shut down. The Washington Post explores, and says that the chain's downfall came because it remained the same—stainless steel tools that streamlined "your life by .002 percent"—while the rest of the world changed. The Sad Final Days of a CompUSA

It's always sad when a store you used to frequent goes out of business, but how about when that store used to mark up its prices like mad? Things become slightly less sad. Nevertheless, this desolate scene at a Portland CompUSA definitely brings a slight tear to our eye. Reader Russ went in for some "last gasp" deals, but there's pretty much nothing left, aisles and displays having been long torn down. He tells us that if there's a store closing near you, you might be able to nab 40% off some Xbox or PSP games as well. Bonus shot after the jump. More »

Sharper Image Files for Bankruptcy; You'll Need to Go Elsewhere to Try Out a Massage Recliner

When I was a kid and would get dragged to the mall by my parents, I would always gravitate to stores like Sharper Image. These gadget-stuffed stores probably never actually got a sale out of me, but they were stuffed to the gills with impractical and expensive gadgets for me to ogle, and there was generally an expensive, ultimately-uncomfortable massage chair near the entrance that lured me in every time. Sadly (I guess), it's now the end of an era: Sharper Image has filed for bankruptcy. More »

Woman Sues Best Buy For $54 Million After They Lost Her Laptop

Stories like this pop up from time to time, but it never ceases to amaze how crazy ass lawsuits end up tying up our legal system. In this case, Best Buy customer Raelyn Campbell purchased a $1100 laptop from a DC area store along with the absurd $300 extended warranty. When her on/off switch broke later that year, she returned to the store to get a repair. More »

Dell Closing its Retail Store Kiosks

Those friendly Dell kiosks you've been seeing in the mall are all going away as Dell shutters all 140 stores in favor of going back to their online sales and bigger name retail outlets (like Best Buy). All their inventory-less stores will be closed, meaning that you will have to order online from the comfort of your own home instead of trekking down to the mall and doing it. Best Buy Still Using Secret In-Store Website With Higher Pricing [Update]

Even after being slapped in the face with a suit by a Connecticut attorney general, Best Buy is still having an internal bestbuy.com website that offers higher prices than the actual bestbuy.com. The only thing Best Buy promised to do is place a notice on the website to indicate that these are in-store prices, which may not be the same as the prices seen online. The point? Bring a printout or a browser-capable cellphone (don't use their Wi-Fi) so you can show employees the price you saw online, which they're supposed to honor. [Consumerist]

Update: A Best Buy employee sheds light on why this is happening:

Where Did You Shop For Evil Holiday Consumer Goods?

It's Christmas Eve, and apparently that means people are making their last, mad dashes to immortalize their kinship through iPods and GPS systems. It's clearly too late to be shopping online for your holiday merchandise, but numerous inquiring minds need to know (OK, just ours), where did you do your holiday shopping this year?

CompUSA may be going out of business soon. According to BGR, they have no shipments scheduled after February, and their holiday revenue this year is half of last year's. [BGR]
