10 Reasons We're Doomed: Black Friday Edition |

(I wasn't Black Friday shopping either though, just ran in for some ammo)

Yesterday, I had the gut-check. I have no savings. I don't exactly live "paycheck-to-paycheck", --I could easily afford the TV and not be broke -- but I knew I wasn't doing things the right way.
So what did I do? Open an ING Direct Savings account and set up automatic weekly deposits to it.
Now I can't afford the TV (or at least, I won't be able to for another few months), but I feel MUCH better about myself.
Though I still want that TV. :(

Not only are the adds and incessant awful "music" annoying as hell, they're also a constant reminder of your own mortality and how you're coming up on another year without much, if anything, to show for the previous one.

That is a bitchin' piece of comic artwork you used for this story....who did it? Neal Adams? I'd like to know.

It often is a compromise to get something 'this close' to what you wanted at a Black Friday sale. If that price difference is not worth the compromise, then the item is not worth the money. I've scoured the ads for the past 3 years TRYING to find something I truely wanted for a deal, and wound up waiting at home each time.
I find that researching your items and making prices for what you think you can get it for makes a lot of sense, but that often means you ahve to pass by 'deals'. I made a promise to myself that I would not buy a Macbook 2.4 unless I could get it for $1400 - there was a TON of sales, but none could get it to my door for $1400 (MacConnection charges me sales tax). I passed up on the BestBuy sale for $1450 because I had set my price - $50 is not a lot when it comes down to the $1400 price, but it still is a goal. I'll now gladly wait for MacWorld.

With the console it's new, it's cutting edge, it is the latest and greatest from whatever company, and it's, more or less, going to stay that way for the next couple of years. And with the latest generation two out of the three sold completely out, so if you didn't camp, you didn't get one at any price (well, unless you wanted to pay several times retail to some scalper on eBay).
The stuff with the biggest markdowns on Black Friday are bottom of the line, or last years' models, it's just crap they're trying to get rid of, it's outdated before you pay for it.

The computers outnumber the humans in my home and when you count the video game consoles, I have to rely on cats to even the score of biological brains to CPUs. I fear the day when the machines take over because none of my cats know how to use a machine gun (Uncle Vanya may be of use with his ability to pee on tech).
Other than that, just gloves, scarves, and little odds and ends.

I hope that few bucks saved on wal-marts cheap plastic junk was worth it for those guys.

Let's face it, most people, especially when placed in large groups, are idiots. And those who are busting through the doors of WalMart at opening on Black Friday aren't playing on the Varsity squad.

* groans *
Great. Another intended gift I now have to return and with no idea what to get you instead.
* scribbles out gift card message *
* heads to bathroom *
* diligently wrings soap and water out of loofa *
* blow dries it to put it back into its gift box *
But I can't take it back today, maybe tomorrow. 'Cuz, unlike most of you folks, today I'm working, an on-call retail employee.

Historically, where I live Black Friday hasn't been too bad, this year though, people have lost their f**king minds. I was going to hit Office Max for some blank CDs and DVDs but the Target next door was so nuts that I just got out of the area... on the way home I went by Best Buy and it was just a total clusterf**k, I had to swerve to avoid getting hit or side-swiped three times over the course of two blocks.
Not worth it.
